Proper battery disposal can prevent fires at Jackson County Transfer Station

The Jackson County Transfer Station is renewing its warning about battery disposal, an issue that once destroyed the building entirely and continues to cause fires today.
Transfer Station Supervisor Frank Freeburg joined Just Talk this morning to explain the danger and what residents need to know about disposing of batteries properly.
Freeburg says improper battery disposal was the suspected cause of the fire that destroyed the building in early 2025, and remains behind the smaller fires that continue to occur at the station today.
Freeburg says the station is fully equipped to dispose of the household batteries that cause these issues. Oftentimes however, the batteries are discarded with regular trash rather than separated, resulting in damage and combustion of the batteries at the station.
Residents can drop off electronics and batteries at the transfer station directly, as long as they are kept separate from regular trash.
