Cardinal Superintendent expands on PPEL increase election information

The election to raise the Maquoketa Community School Districts Physical Plant and Equipment Levy – or PPEL – will take place next Tuesday September 8th for the district’s voters.

KMAQ reached out to the Cardinal Superintendent Tara Notz and invited her on to our Just Talk podcast to discuss this election in depth. She started off by explaining how the PPEL tax levy is decided and what the funds are used for.

While schools can collect taxes from levies, the rate is determined by voters. Iowa law requires school districts to put any tax levy rate to a popular vote. Notz explained further why the school board feels this increase is necessary.

The increase to the levy would not extend it, or add a new one. Rather it would allow the board to increase the amount able to be collected to $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable value. The election will be next Tuesday September 8th for voters in the school district.
