Joanne Scheckel

Joanne Scheckel, 87, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Fieldstone of DeWitt, surrounded by her family.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m., Saturday, May 9, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the church, the Rev. Fr. Michael Snyder officiating. Interment following in the church cemetery.

Joanne Eva Scheckel was born February 1, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Marie (Kautenberger) Lutgen. Joanne was united in marriage to Verlyn Scheckel on July 11, 1959, in Bettendorf. The couple resided in DeWitt, where they raised their family of 4. Verlyn preceded her in death on January 26, 2024.

Joanne worked at the Workshoppe in DeWitt for many years, where she taught many crafting classes. She was especially talented in sewing, painting, and quilting. Joanne was active in the DeWitt community, and was a dedicated member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, including vacations in Wisconsin.

Surviving are her children, Michael (Cindy) Scheckel of Silvis, Illinois, Diana (Brian Atlee) Biskup of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Steven “Goob” (Debbie Clark) Scheckel of DeWitt, and Barbara Scheckel of DeWitt; grandchildren, Kate (Morgan) Umphres, Jessica (Marcus) Gillmor, Bridget (Mitchell) Manning, and Madeline (Matt) Collins; great-grandsons, Wyatt and Emmett Manning, Owen and Dakota Gillmor, and Callan Umphres, and a great-granddaughter, Quinn Collins; siblings, Sister Angele Lutgen, Carolyn Lutgen, and John (Kathy) Lutgen, and brothers-in-law, Jim Ninko, and Merwyn (Carleen Sievertsen) Scheckel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Patricia Ninko, and Barbara (Richard) Ryan.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the DeWitt Community Library.
