Maquoketa Girls at Cascade Relays

Speed and Stamina Shine in the Cascade Chill - Story by Tod Bowman

The Maquoketa Cardinals proved that speed has no “off” switch on Thursday night, battling the 10-team field on a cool night. The Cardinals relied on a mix of veteran dominance and fresh-faced energy to rack up points across the board.

Natalie Hackman had a strong performance in the 800m, distancing herself from the pack to “cruise” to a gold medal in 2:19.50.

In the 400m Dash, it was a Maquoketa sandwich at the top of the leaderboards. Cora Widel showcased her signature kick to claim first place in 1:00.09, while teammate Tenley Thole turned heads with an outstanding performance, clocking a Personal Record (PR) of 1:05.19 to take third. The duo set the tone for the 4 x 400m relay, where the “Consistent Cards” lived up to their name, to bring home the gold in 4:13.70.

Cora Widel had a busy and productive night; along with her 400m win, she ran the curve in the 200m dash to take second in 26.43. Meanwhile, Justice Armbruster, the hurdle specialist for the Cardinals, took second in the 400m hurdles (1:09.00) and added a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles (16.50).

The relay units showed impressive depth across all distances:

  • Sprint Medley: The quartet of Widel, Millie Wing, Hackman, and freshman anchor Isabel locked in a third-place finish (1:56.03).

  • 4 x 800m: The distance crew of Charlotte Ihns, Emily Siegrest, Emrie Petersen, and Ella Gibson battled for a bronze finish (11:57.93).

  • Sprint Depth: The 4×100 and 4 200 featuring Millie Wing, Mack McLaughlin, Isabel Hopson, Ava Ferguson, Tenley Thole and Atty Moore, fought through the stiff Cascade breeze to claim 6th and 7th place finishes respectively.

  • Distance Medley: Aubrey Witt, Beauty Moore, Emily Siegrist, and Clara Ihms placed 6th with a time of 5:42.64.

Senior Night Under the Lights

The team returns to honor the four seniors Monday night at Northeast, a chance for the community to honor the leaders who have set the pace for this successful season.
