Maquoketa Girls Track at the Vinton Invitational

Hopson Reaches Rare Air - Story by Tod Bowman

The story of the night belonged to freshman Isabel Hopson. In a performance that defied her age, Hopson cleared 5-4 in the high jump to take first place. Not only was this a personal record, but it launched her into a tie for second all-time in Maquoketa history alongside Laura Osterhaus (2010). Hopson now sits just one inch away from the legendary school record of 5-5, held by Addie Wallace since 1983.

The Cardinals capped off the evening with a “down to the wire” victory in the 4 x 400 Relay. The quartet of Natalie Hackman, Isabel Hopson, Justice Armbruster, and Cora Widel battled a powerhouse West Delaware team, digging deep to secure gold with a blistering time of 4:06.12.

Other relay highlights included:

  • Distance Medley: Millie Wing, Isabel Hopson, Justice Armbruster, and Natalie Hackman took 2nd with a strong 4:20.63.

  • Sprint Medley: Millie Wing, Mack McLaughlin, Justice Armbruster, and Cora Widel finished 4th (1:52.75).

  • 4 x 100 Relay: The team of Millie Wing, Mack McLaughlin, Ella Gibson, and Jo Ochoa clocked a 55.46 to take 5th.

Beyond the relay success, the Cardinals saw impressive depth in individual events, led by Cora Widel’s strong night on the track. Widel secured a pair of silver-medal finishes, clocking a 1:00.57 in the 400m run and returning later to sprint to a 26.44 in the 200m dash.

Justice Armbruster continued her strong season in the hurdles, battling through a tough field to take 3rd place in the 400m Hurdles. In the distance events, Charlotte Ihns put together a gritty performance in the 800m dash, crossing the finish line in 2:42.07.

The sprints saw Jo Ochoa and Millie Wing both fight their way into the scoring column. Ochoa placed 7th in the 100m dash with a time of 14.37, while Wing also took 7th in a crowded 200m field, finishing in 28.55.

In the field events, Harper Gjerstad had a career night in the shot put. Gjerstad launched a new personal record of 28-11, a mark that earned her a spot in the finals and a 9th place finish overall.

Maquoketa will compete Thursday at the Cascade Cougar Relays.
