Benefits of therapy dogs for students and faculty

Therapy and service dogs are a resource that has many benefits to those who utilize them. One of the main groups that these dogs can help is students, and they are already being used in the Maquoketa School District. Two teachers and community members, Jenna Spain and Katelyn Hasenbank, spoke about the different ways they utilize the dogs in their classrooms.
While Spain spoke about the more academic uses, Hasenbank spoke about how she uses the dogs to help students regulate their emotions.
While these dogs have shown benefits for use in schools, they are also available to members of the community when they are present. The cost associated with purchasing and training these dogs is the biggest obstacle preventing more dogs from being implemented further.
