Special election for Maquoketa Community School District held throughout the day tomorrow

Those within the Maquoketa Community School District will have the chance to vote in a special election tomorrow.
The public measure up for vote would extend the current tax rates that those in the district are already paying. KMAQ reached out to the Jackson County Auditors Office who provided more information.
The current measure needs a simple majority, 50% + 1 vote, for it to be extended another 10 years. It is important to note, this would not lead to an increase in the tax rates or amount paid. Rather the taxes paid by those in the school district would remain as they are now, just for a longer period.
KMAQ also reached out to the School Business Official Kristy Haxmeier for additional clarification.
She stated that the school board is working ahead and looking at the end of the fiscal year 2027, and wants to get the measure worked out sooner rather than later. These taxes are only paid by those within the school district, and not by those across the entire county.
The polling stations will be opening tomorrow at 7am and lasting until 8pm. During that time, anyone within the district can stop by and vote for the measure. Voting stations and ballots will be at the Pearson Hall at the Jackson County Fair Grounds.
Again, only those in the school district will be affected and can vote for the measure.
Information collected directly from the Jackson County Auditor’s Office and the Maquoketa Community School District’s Public Official.
