Maple sap collecting event tomorrow at Maquoketa Caves

The Maquoketa Caves State Park and Friends group are inviting the public out to help tap trees tomorrow.
We had Ryland Richards and Scott Dykstra on our Just Talk program this morning to discuss this event, why it’s done, and what the tree sap is then used for. They started off by explaining that there is a specific season for harvesting sap from the trees.
Tomorrow will allow for the public to get involved in this process and see the equipment in person. Participants will be able to tap the trees themselves and help set up the collection bags for the sap. This will help them tap more trees, which is necessary as processing sap into syrup requires a lot of sap.
So if you want to help collect the sap that will eventually become the syrup you drizzle on your pancakes at their breakfast later in the fall, join them at the caves park tomorrow at 4:30pm. Meet by the sugar shack near the campgrounds and they will show you the process.
