Senator Grassley discusses soybeans, tariffs, and holiday travels with KMAQ

I had the opportunity to ask Senator Chuck Grassley a few questions this morning.

Senator Grassley gives radio stations across Iowa the chance to ask him directly about any topic. I asked him about the soybean deal that was recently made with China, how tariffs are affecting materials needed for farmers, and airline reopenings for the Thanksgiving travel season.

With the soybean trade deal Grassley was hesitant to celebrate the deal without more action from China. He explained how China has recently dealt with Brazil for soybeans as well, which could slow their purchasing from the United States. He ended by saying a bail out for farmers will most likely be needed, due to the loss they experienced from the trade war and tariffs.

With the mentioning of tariffs, my next question led into a further discussion about them. I asked Senator Grassley if fertilizer access and availability will be impacted by tariffs. Grassley mentioned both Canada for potash, and Morocco for phosphates, and how tariffs are rising prices for them. Grassley also made a direct statement to the White House about his feelings on tariffs that affect farmers.

With the government finally being reopened, and government workers receiving back pay, I asked Grassley about the airline’s situation. He expects the airports to take about a week before being back up to full operations.

Senator Grassley said it will take some time, but that travelers shouldn’t have to worry about their flights for Thanksgiving.

All audio comes from Senator Grassley speaking on the record to KMAQ.
