Secretary Naig discusses supply details with Maquoketa Co-op

Secretary Mike Naig was in Eastern Iowa yesterday and visited AgVantage in Maquoketa to have discussion with the co-op.

The meeting between the co-op and Secretary Naig lasted for an hour and 20 minutes, and covered many different topics. One of the main points discussed was about supply chains, their vital role to keep operations running smoothly, and potential disruptions that may arise around them.

Fertilizer and nitrogen are the two resources that businesses, and by extension farmers, are seeing potential challenges with. While the existing stockpiles and reserves are plentiful enough for the rest of the year, next year’s supplies could see disruptions. According to Secretary Naig and the co-op, Canadian fertilizer production is seeing disruptions and price increases, which is only made worse by trade relations and tariffs. This leads to a domino effect that affects not just Iowa and its farmers, but eventually the entire world.

According to the co-op, the potential for scarcity of these resources has led to nervousness from farmers about the cost of the materials. While production has seen some disruptions, the trade routes have as well, with railways being brought up as an example. Secretary Naig discussed in detail with the co-op about some different ways to get the resources that farmers need for their operations.
