Friday afternoon was the Iowa High School State Cross Country meet in Fort Dodge and Maquoketa senior Izzy Hardin wrapped up her high school career with a runner-up finish. Hardin closed with a time of 18.02.8, the second fastest time of her career. She improved by nearly 33 seconds from last year’s state meet, when she finished 5th.
Saturday night was Game 7 of the World Series and in improbable fashion the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first team in 25 years to win back-to-back MLB World Championships. L.A. trailed by one run in the 9th inning, and the last hitter in the lineup, 36-year old Miguel Rojas, got his first hit in a calendar month with the biggest swing of his life, sending a solo home run into the left field seats to tie the game. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, after throwing almost 100 pitches the day before, then came in to close things out and send the game into extra innings. In the top of the 11th inning, Dodger catcher Will Smith sent a towering blast over the wall to give the L.A. a 5-4 advantage. In the bottom of the inning though, the Blue Jays had a chance to win their first title in 32 years, having runners on first and third base with only 1 out; But a groundball hit up the middle turned into a double play – leading to heartbreak for Toronto, and cementing the Dodgers as a dynasty – as they win their 3rd championship in 6 seasons. The Japanese pitcher, Yamamoto, who just finished his second year in the majors, took home the World Series MVP trophy, in one of the greatest World Series in history.
