Maquoketa receives $750,000 in funding to preserve its historical buildings

The City of Maquoketa has received three quarters of a million dollars in funding to preserve its historic buildings.

The Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant gives funding to help improve and maintain historically significant buildings. While the grant is funded privately, the National Park Service acts as the Federal pass-through agency.

The City of Maquoketa is one of few across the country that have received this grant. 33 buildings have been recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Just a few of those locations are Hotel Hurst, The Decker House Hotel, The First National bank, and many more. The Maquoketa Commercial Historic District is also mentioned which includes much of the downtown area on Main Street.

The City of Maquoketa has approved the agreement with the plans to begin development soon. Many details are still needed to be figured out, such as communication with the National Park Service and contractors. Information will be released as progress is made.

Information was collected from the City of Maquoketa’s Facebook page.
