Dubuque flood prevention project could be delayed to 2029

The Dubuque flood prevention project could get delayed to 2029.
The 28 million dollar project was put on hold after a liquid fertilizer spill in a retention pond occurred in 2020. The purpose of the project is to help mitigate or prevent flooding in thousands of residences and structures.
Studies are being conducted on the severity of the contamination from the spill and could take more than a year to complete. As a result, the project’s construction is being pushed back until the investigation is finished. With construction on hold, the project might not be completed until 2029.
The testing for contamination will cost almost a quarter of a million dollars, which is being pulled from a contingency fund for the project.
