Dubuque confirms reports of bird flu

Dubuque has two confirmed cases of bird flu. The infected birds were Canada geese and two were found inside the city of Dubuque, while more were reported in the surrounding area. Canada geese are the most affected by the flu but other birds such as red-tail hawks, mallards, and pelicans can also be affected.
If an infected or injured bird is seen, do not approach it. While no cases of human infection have been found to come from wild birds, it has occurred from contact with infected domestic birds and cattle. Do not handle any infected bird and do not allow pets to come in contact with them either. All sightings of infection should be reported to the local county conservation.
If any poultry producer suspects infection, contact a veterinarian immediately. Possible cases of infection must also be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. The phone number for them is 515-281-5305.
