Muster on the Maquoketa is this Weekend

Today is the start of the Muster on the Maquoketa! It started today with events and educational field trips for some of the students here in Jackson County, and continues with a dinner tonight. The dinner is open to the public and costs just 10-dollars. Abraham Lincoln will be present at the event, and will be talking to people about his life and the country during that time in history.

Tomorrow will kick off the civil war reenactment on the fairgrounds. You’ll be able to walk around the camps and tents that the soldiers lived in during the war. They will be cooking, answering questions, and acting like a soldier during the Civil War. The reenactment starts at 9am, with many drills, speeches, and a battle happening throughout the day, ending at 4pm. The day isn’t over at 4pm though, with plenty more events and activities continuing, ending with a dinner and dance later that night.

Sunday will see similar events to Saturday. Notably it will start off with a church service with the soldiers in the volunteer hall starting at 9am. More drills and speeches will happen, and another battle as well. Sunday ends a bit earlier, with 2:30pm being the last event.

Iowa itself had an important role in the Civil War, and this event allows for a glimpse into the past that helped shape not just our nation, but also our state. The Jackson County Historical Society has organized the event, and you can visit their website for the full schedule of events.
