Black Bear Spotting in Illinois

In some more unique news there was a bear spotted in Jo Daviess and Carroll counties in Illinois. It was reported by multiple local residents to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. According to the report it was a black bear that has been seen in the Mississippi Palisades State Park and East of Galena. While the spotting of a bear in this area is very rare, the IDNR reminds everyone that they are still wild animals, and should be respected as such. If you encounter a black bear it’s important to remember to check for any food sources that may attract a bear, and to never approach one either. Some other precautions that can be taken include securing garbage and recycling, removing bird feeders when necessary, and making sure all grills or cooking equipment is properly cleaned after it’s used. If a bear is spotted, alert nearby residents in the area. If a bear is encountered outside, back away slowly and quietly while maintaining visual contact.
