Davenport Man Arrest After Leading Police on a Chase and Jumping Off a Bridge

A dramatic water rescue led to the arrest of a Quad-City man wanted on firearms and drug charges early Saturday morning. Just after 3:30 a.m. yesterday, Davenport police spotted 23-year-old Darryl Shears driving on LeClaire Street. Officers pulled him over on the Rock Island Arsenal Bridge, but Shears jumped from his vehicle and into the Mississippi River. He was found clinging to roller dam machinery. Emergency crews launched a water rescue, and Shears was taken into custody without further incident. Multiple agencies assisted, including Davenport and Bettendorf police, state and federal authorities, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Shears had active arrest warrants related to firearms and drug offenses.
