Large Police Presence in Savanna

A stolen car pursuit that began late last night in Freeport ended early this morning in Savanna with multiple officers injured and a suspect in custody. According to a release from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Freeport Police tried to stop a stolen vehicle around 10:19 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect fled, leading officers on a chase that was called off after the vehicle sped away. A short time later, Jo Daviess County deputies spotted the car, but that pursuit was also terminated. At around 3:40 a.m. this morning, the suspect was located again in Savanna. During the chase, the vehicle rammed a squad car, and gunfire was exchanged with officers from several jurisdictions. The pursuit came to a violent end near Chicago and Park Streets when the suspect’s car crashed into a Mount Carroll squad car, also damaging a home’s front porch. More shots were fired just before officers made contact with the suspect. Several officers were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was airlifted to a regional hospital and is in stable condition. The Illinois State Police is now investigating. No further details have been released.
