First Heat Wave Brings Extreme Heat
Our first heat wave of the year comes on the first day of summer. The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities has issued a Heat Advisory for heat index values ranging from 100-105+.
Now if you’re going to be out and about during this heat wave here are some safety tips for you to stay safe & cool. If you don’t have any air conditioning try looking for a cooling center. The City of Maquoketa will have 3 cooling centers. The Maquoketa City Hall, The Maquoketa YMCA, and the Maquoketa public library all of which will be open during their regular business hours.Â
In Bellevue, St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 300 S. 3rd Street, is opening their basement to the public as a place to cool off. Please enter through the south side door near the parsonage. An elevator is available located on Jefferson St. for those who need it.
Take cool showers or baths. Wear loose, lightweight, light colored clothing to keep your body cooler. Use your oven less as that heats up the house.Â
If you’re outside, find some shade away from the sun. You can also wear a hat to protect your face. Make sure to drink plenty of water or sports drinks to hydrate yourself in a heat wave. Avoid being outside during the peak heating of the day.Â
Also check in on friends, family, and neighbors, especially the elderly and younger children. Also don’t forget your pet. Asphalt and cement can be very hot on the pet’s paw. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet. Watch out for signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
