Dubuque Residents Can Now Set Fireworks Off

Residents in Dubuque will be able to light up the sky this year—legally—thanks to a new state law and a recent decision by the Dubuque City Council.

During Monday night’s meeting, council members approved an ordinance allowing the use of consumer fireworks within city limits. Fireworks will now be permitted on July 3rd from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., July 4th from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and December 31st from 9 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. The use of fireworks on any other day remains prohibited.

The ordinance also includes important restrictions. Fireworks can only be used on private property with the owner’s permission, and are not allowed in public spaces such as streets, sidewalks, or parks.

City officials urge residents to use caution. Fireworks can pose dangers in dry weather and may cause distress for children, pets, and people with PTSD.

Violating the new ordinance could cost you—a minimum fine of $250 and a simple misdemeanor charge.
