Governor Reynolds Signed Math Counts Act into Law

Governor Kim Reynolds has signed the Math Counts Act into law. The new legislation aims to boost math achievement across Iowa schools through early detection and targeted support. Governor Reynolds said one of the greatest predictors of future success in the classroom and workplace, along with early literacy, is math proficiency.  The law requires schools to screen students for math skills, build individualized learning plans, and train teachers in evidence-based instruction. It also ensures families get tools to support learning at home. Iowa has made strides in reading, especially among low-income students, but continues to fall behind in math—prompting urgent action. The Department of Education will now develop a statewide plan and approve math screeners for grades K through 6.
