Clinton County Could Adopt Stricter Rules for Wind Turbines

Clinton County is moving closer to adopting stricter rules for wind turbine development.
This week, the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved changes to the current ordinance that would increase the required distance between wind turbines and nearby properties. The proposed new rules would double the current setback—from around 1,200 feet to 2,500 feet from any property line.
The plan also includes broader restrictions aimed at protecting sensitive areas. Turbines would be prohibited within ten miles of the Mississippi River and five miles from the Wapsipinicon River. And no turbines could be built within two miles of any city limits in the county.
Supporters of the changes say they’re about preserving quality of life and protecting the environment, while some critics argue the new rules could make it nearly impossible to develop wind energy projects in the area.
The proposal now heads to the Clinton County Board of Supervisors, who will have the final say.
