The Monmouth Police Department has released information regarding a lost service pistol incident that occurred in December 2022, confirming that the firearm remains missing despite extensive search efforts.

According to a statement issued Friday, Feb. 7, an officer lost a department-issued pistol with a single loaded magazine while heading to an emergency call. The department did not publicly disclose the incident earlier, citing standard protocol against releasing information on ongoing internal investigations.

Police said officers initiated an immediate and thorough search of the surrounding area, which spanned more than two miles over multiple days. Despite these efforts, the firearm was not recovered. Authorities have entered the weapon’s serial number into federal databases, and city officials, including the mayor and alderpersons, were promptly notified. Federal agencies were also alerted to assist in tracking and potential recovery.

Following an internal review, the officer involved received the maximum discipline allowed, according to police officials. The department declined to release the officer’s name, citing legal protections and privacy considerations.

The investigation remains active. Authorities urge anyone with information about the missing firearm to contact Warren County Crime Stoppers at 309-734-9363.
