Prairie Creek Project

A project is underway in partnership with Jackson County Conservation to improve a park on East Summit Street.
The project focuses on water quality, reducing river sediment, and adding recreation features like trails and a disc golf course spread across 40 acres of prairie.
“The community from Maquoketa, Jackson County, and surrounding areas can come to this area and appreciate the habitat, wildlife, and the values of the recreational opportunities here,” said Nathan Jones, Jackson County Conservation Board Director.
In addition, it would improve wildlife habitat and help rebalance the habitat for mussels and fish species in the Maquoketa and Mississippi Rivers.
“Projects like this can help clean that water, eliminate some of that sediment from getting into our systems, and in the long term maybe help the water quality as we go down the river system from our neighbors downstream,” concluded Jones
The project is set to be finished by November.
