Houe Fire in Davenport

Timmy Zahn, a neighbor, said he was watching TV when he saw flashes.

“I open the door and that whole front end of that house was just engulfed, flames was flying up,” Timmy said.

The Davenport Fire Department responded to the 1300 block of West 8th Street for a report of a house fire on Monday at 3:16 am, according to  Davenport Fire Marshal Jim Morris. As crews searched the house, they were able to find two people that were brought out of the home and taken to Scott County Medic crews for treatment and then taken to the hospital. The conditions of those two patients are “unknown at this time.”

Officials said, crews, learned that more people were still on the second floor of the home. Crews continued to extinguish the fire while searching for the additional victims.

Crews found an unresponsive man who was brought out of the home and quickly taken to Genesis East, then airlifted by Med-Force to the University of Iowa Hospital, . He is in “critical condition.”

Then, three additional victims were found with burn injuries that resulted in their deaths, officials said. Their identities are not yet being released, pending an autopsy and positive identification of their identities.

When crews arrived at the home, they found heavy smoke and heavy fire coming from both stories of a “two-story single-family dwelling,” crews said.

Scott County Communications dispatchers said that multiple 911 callers reported smoke and heavy fire. This information was relayed to crews that two people in the home were tapped in the basement and could not get out due to smoke and fire blocking the exit.

First arriving crews found heavy fire on the front, inside of the house, officials said. Fire crews stretched a hose line, extinguishing the heaviest of the fire on the exterior portion of the house and were able to quickly make their way to the interior fire area.

Additional crews quickly got into the back of the first floor entrance to access the basement stairs, officials said. There they were met with heavy fire.

An aggressive attack resulted in crews gaining access to the basement, officials said. They were able to rescue two people who were brought to Scott County Medic personnel for treatment and taken to the hospital with their “conditions unknown.”

Then, one of the victims said that more people were still on the second floor.

Fire crews continued to extinguish the fire while additional crews searched for more potential victims, officials said. Crews then found an unresponsive man who was brought out of the home and quickly taken to Genesis East, then airlifted by Med-Force to the University of Iowa Hospital.

Three additional victims were found with burn injuries that resulted in their deaths, officials said.

A total of 17 personnel responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
