CCASWA Ending Rural County Recycling Bin Service in DeWitt
Contact: Brad Seward – Director of Operations and Education

12/18/2024
The Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency (CCASWA) is announcing an end of service for the rural recycling
bin in DeWitt. This service will end before the end of the year.
The agency is not renewing a contract with the hauler that has serviced the bin because of continued abuse and
illegal dumping of non-recyclable materials in the bin.
In 2020 the bin was been placed in the cul-de-sac near 500 South Fifth Street in DeWitt, at the Eastern Iowa
Power and Light office. Things started off great, but the quality of the material has deteriorated in the past few
years. Repeated contamination was reported in loads for the past few years. With these facts, the decision was
made by the agency to not renew the service.
People tried to recycle things such as toilets, automobile sets, dead animals, clothing, hoses, construction
debris, office furniture, electrical items, Styrofoam, and numerous other items that are simply garbage and
should not be recycled. Frankly, this container services turned into an unmonitored trash dumpster. A few bad
apples, who didn’t want to follow the rules, ruined this service for those who used this container for acceptable
items.
Residents may continue to utilize the drop-off bins located at the Clinton County Recycling Center, during
normal business hours of 7:30 AM-4:30 PM Monday through Friday and Saturday 7:30 AM – Noon.
For more information check out the recycling page of ccaswa.com. Any other questions can be directed to
CCASWA at 563-242-5320.
