Maquoketa weekly summary of November 11/15-24
Josh Boldt–Maquoketa City Manage:
It was a short week at City Hall and the beginning of budget season for fiscal year 2025-2026, City Hall staff prepared a large City Council agenda for Monday, November 18th, at City Hall. City Hall received some extra help this week with our PT Secretary, Lisa Elgin, beginning last Thursday. It was a noce start and she is easing into some of the work around the office.
Community Development:
The Community Foundation of Jackson County held their annual awards reception for the Community and greater Jackson County. The event was held at Innovate 129. Many local organizations and causes were supported by the Foundation this year. The Maquoketa Betterment Corp. received a $50,000 dollar grant commitment for the Maquoketa Green Space redevelopment.
The Prairie Creek Recreation Area project is well underway from Highway 64 entrance side. The city County Conservation Board also had a bid opening for the remainder of the project on Thursday afternoon to build a pedestrian bridge, trail, North side parking lot, shelter, and a disc golf course on the Southwest side of the 274 acre property.
Police Department:
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. According to the Center for Disease Control there are two types of fentanyl–pharmaceutical and illegally made fentanyl. This week, Maquoketa Police Officers attended an Illicit Fentanyl Crisis and Drug Poisonings training in Davenport. The training was a good reminder for Officers on how to keep themselves and others safe when dealing with fentanyl or possibly fentanyl laced drugs.
Water-Wastewater:
We started out this week with our 2nd break of the season on Wesley Dr. It was a 4 inch main and in the front yard, so it was a fairly easy and quick fix, and three houses were affected. Tuesday was spent cleaning and restocking for the next one. We had training on the new sludge tank. We have a blacktop parking lot.
Public Works Department:
This week is leaf pick up on the East side of town. Next week November 18th we will start on the West side of town. November 25th we will pick up on Main Street and Platt Street. If you miss the dates for leaf pick up, please take your leaves to the brush site located on Birch Drive.
We received one of our two snow plow trucks. The next one is scheduled for late January delivery.
