Greenspace Gets $10,000 from Rotary

The Maquoketa Rotary Club today (Wednesday) presented a check to the Maquoketa Greenspace Project at the club’s regular meeting held at the Eagles Club. The $10-thousand dollar donation was presented to City Manager, Josh Boldt and Greenspace Co-Chair, Nancy Kilburg, by Rotary Club President, Jeremy Venenga.

Venenga says the money raised was a result of an annual fundraiser the club hosts each year.
Venenga added that the local money raised was matched by a $5,000 grant from Rotary International, helping to boost the total amount donated.
The money will go toward the total fundraising goal of $1.45 million dollars, most of which has already been raised. However, organizers say they still need to raise about $130 thousand dollars to complete the project.
The greenspace was created In early 2008 when fire ravished downtown Maquoketa. Several businesses on the east side of Main Street were destroyed creating the greenspace. It is estimated that over 8000 people visit the space on an annual basis today, and there are more than 16 events that take place in the space on a yearly basis.
