Broke another temperature high today, set in Maquoketa back in 1932. It was 55 and we hit 67 today.
Had a good potluck lunch this noon at the Jackson County Historical Society LEAP YEAR EVENT. Nice turnout, including former Maquoketan Ron Rief. Also met a man who is going to establish a Commemorative Tree Park in Northeastern Jackson County, that sounds quite exciting. More later when an official press release is issued to the media.
St.Rep. Bob Osterhaus announced today that he will be a candidate for re-election this fall. He was first elected to the House back in 1996 in a special election after then St. Rep. Jerry Cornelius died from an unexpected illness. Then, that fall, Osterhaus was elected to a full two year term. Then relected again in 1998. He has been popular and will be hard to beat. He's a Democrat.
Phil Tabor, Jackson County Attorney, has asked that he be allowed to go half-time with the job and hire a fulltime assistant. No action has been taken by the Supervisors.
Took a break for something to eat.
My son, Dave, and I, went up to THE LOFT, a SHORT CLIMB TO A GREAT TIME,upstairs in downtown Maquoketa, where we each had a couple beers and a Bison Burger. Good sandwich. Popular place. Austin Snell was singing up there tonight....doing good job. Nancy, is at the Hospital running the Auxiliary Gift Shop until 8...so I let Judy do the cooking for me tonight. Had a nice chat with Jerry Willey while there. Jerry, is retired from Caterpillar and living again in Maquoketa. His son is GM for the new Stadium Football team in the Quad Cities, and they open the season at THE MARK on April 15th.
Well..have some spots to tape, so will end this for another day.
Thanks for coming by.

Sunny and 58 today..a beautiful day.
A 49-year-old Bellevue woman and former nurse at the JCPHospital was sentenced in Jackson County District Court today. Shirley Adams was charged with obtaining or attempting to obtain a prescription drug by fraud or desceit. She had pleaded guilty to the charge on Jan 21st. This happened last July. She was placed on probation for 3 years.
A 58 year old Maquoketa man, school teacher, has agreed to plead guilty to two charges in a plea agreement in Jackson County District Court. Frank Randall pleaded guilty to charges of interference with official acts, and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, second offense. In exchange for the guilty pleas, an original charge of theft in the second degree will be dismissed. The charges were filed against him in Novemberof last year. He is retiring as a Maquoketa elementary school teacher.
Loras Lahey, age 80, of Maquoketa and formerly of West Union, died Friday at the local hospital. Services will be Thursday in Maquoketa and burial will be in West Union. Survivors include a son, Randy, in Maquoketa, owner of Haylock-O'Hara and Lahey Funeral Home.
The Maquoketa boys play Davenport Assumption in tournament action here in town tonight. They are ranked 2nd in the State. Bill Flemmings final game at the MCHS gym. Packed house expected. Bob Warner will do the play-by-play on KMAQ-FM.
Trent Tilton, son of Dean and Karen Tilton in Maquoketa , graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic last Friday in Davenport, in a class of over 250. Trent's wife is still a student there and will be for another l8-months. Trent will work part-time in the area until she graduates and then the couple plan to open their own office, probably in the Chicago area, as that would be an area half-way between his wife's home and Maquoketa. His father-in-law is a Chiropractor in Michigan. Dr. Tilton and his wife have a 2-year old daughter.
Enjoy tomorrow...a BONUS DAY in the year 2000.

Sunny, beautiful Sunday in Maquoketa...high will be around 50. Warm weather is in the forecast thru at least Wednesday.
Ski Resort at Galena announced that today is last day for the season and Dubuque will probably also close soon.....they both got off to a late start last November-December and now early end...so a bad year for snow fans.
Got an e-mail from Ken Goodenow, who left KMAQ last month as a part-time announcer to move to Minneapolis to work at a Ford plant. He had also been working at Rosenberg Auto Supply. Worked here for nearly 7 years, starting when he was 15. Likes his new job and the big city. Miss his smilin' face around here. His dad works at the Maquoketa Airport (more or less runs it I guess, in addition to having his reupholstery business)and his mom did work a long time a Sunshine School but now in the front office for Delwood School District in Delmar.
Was to the Boy Scout breakfast this morning out at the VFW Post Home. Good turnout. Enjoyed a new Jackson County Product...sausage from Tabor Family Meats. Tabor Family meats is a small family farm owned business located about 15 miles northwest of Maquoketa. All of their hogs are raised and grain-fed. All of thier meat is processed at a small family owned locker. Business is owned by brothers Brian and David Tabor and their wives, Deanna and Durene. David is a member of the Maquoketa School Board and former State Representative. Their cousin owns Tabor Home Winery, located on the same road north of Baldwin. Farmers, marketing their own products, is being pushed in Iowa, as a way to make more money from the products they produce. At the breakfast, sat with Jack and Marilyn Willey. They were excited because they were going to their first-ever Iowa Hawkeye game at Iowa City this afternoon. Paul Koob couldn't use his tickets, so gave his tickets to them. Jack and Marilyn still operate their popular beauty salon and Jack is a good County Supervisor too. And Jack is a good cousin to my wife, Nancy.
Last night, after church (First Lutheran has a popular Saturday night 6 P.M. service in addition to their 8 and 10:30 Sunday morning services)we went out the Bluff Lake Catfish Farm Restaurant. The parking lot was packed...the reception room was packed...people were standing outside...so we left. But..that is the way it is every Saturday from 4 P.M. 'til 9 P.M. or later. And, Friday night is just about the same, with Thursday and Sunday very busy too. Open only those 4 days. Still owned by Linda Kuhlman Wells (husband is Brent, owner of heating and airconditioning busines in town) and it is one of Iowa's most popular restaurants. Beyond the Maquoketa Caves State Park on a gravel road...then on a private gravel mile-long driveway, over hills, and.....there it is...in the valley, right on top of the man made lake. Karen and Bob Thomas called this morning and asked if we wanted to go out there this afternoon and so..hope we won't have to wait long. Thursdays, CHICKEN. Fridays, catfish. Saturdays, COD and Sundays, shrimp and chicken. No, they didn't pay for this commercial, but they are good advertisers on KMAQ...one of the reasons I'm sure that they are soooo busy.
We came back from Bluff Lake...still hungry...so went to our nice downtown Chines restaurant....for their Saturday night buffet. It was now nearly 8 and we were only customers, sad to say. But, they may have been busy earlier...hope so. No, they don't advertise on KMAQ...or anywhere. Also went past THE DEPOT and they had just a few cars for a Saturday night....nice place.
I know...you guys don't really care about this_________. But, sometimes you need to know that life in a small town can be easy and hard sometimes for business.
Remember where Curly's South Inn was located on South Main. All kinds of remodeling going on there....no one knows what for. I'll let you know.
DeWitt Girls LOST last night and will not go to State. But, #1 Preston DID and so did North Cedar, so they will both be going to State. North Cedar High School is at Stanwood and is a new District formed a few years ago, that also includes Clarence and Lowden. We have lots of listners in those two small towns...so we will broadcast the games of both teams.
Longtime Maquoketa State Bank employee Elaine Marshall leaves the bank this coming Tuesday. Employees will have a farewell party for her the same day. She and Ed Tubbs are getting married later this year.
Nick Meyer will be the new Manager of the Jackson County Humaine Society northeast of Maquoketa. He will live in the home out there. He also is in the Insurance business. Parents are Fred and Irma Meyer.
Maquoketa will host Davenport Assumption tomorrow night in boys tournament game....will be a big crowd...and Maquoketa will need some luck to win.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK...WHEREVER YOU ARE.

Cloudy most of today until sunshine arrived late in afternoon. At noon today, our high was 64, a new record high, replacing the 62 high set in 1896.
Cole Pape took 3rd in the State Wrestling Tournament today, in his weight, in 3-A. He's a Junior. His Freshman and Sophomore year, he was a State Champion. Maquoketa's only other wrestler at State, Derek Fuglsang, a Freshmen, lost his first two matches and was then out of the tournament. Coach Tampier has a good bunch of guys coming back next year. Only 2 or 3 Seniors were on this year's winning team. The Booster Club will have a WELCOME HOME reception for the two wrestlers tomorrow afternoon.
Sorry, but nothing else today.

A NEW RECORD HIGH FOR TODAY......the old high for this day was 64-degrees in 1930 and today, at around noon, we topped at 68. Then the rain started around 2 again and we started dropping. Some sunshine this morning.
Check the GUEST BOOK for new entries...and a request to help someone possibly win a contest. Mary is from Maquoketa and owns harness racing horses.
Getting more used to my new computer and starting to like it. Did you notice, my Wednesday report was repeated 3 times. I won't do that again.
In Wrestling at State...Derek Fuglsang last night lost his opening match 4 to 1, to a wrestler who was a State Champion last year. So, he did well. Then in the Wrestle-Back, he lost in overtime 5 to 4. Was out in front 4 to 3 with seconds left and his man got an escape and tied the score, going into overtime. Derek, just a Freshsman, will not wrestle again at State and ends with a fine year. His parents are Kent and Sally and grandmother is Nancy Moore of Sunshine School. Cole Pape, our other wrestler at State, and two-time defending State Champ, won his match last night and is wrestling right now. So, I'll wait now and see how he does. (Listening now to Doc Koob) End of first period, 0 to 0. End of 2nd period, Cole trailing 2 to 1. Pape goes into OT at 2 to 2. Pape looses with 30 seconds left in OT as his man got a Takedown and wins 4 t o 2. In OT, the first man that scores, wins. So, Cole will not be a 3rd Time Champion. Cole will be in a Wrestle-Back later this afternoon and I'll have his outcome for you tomorrow.
The JCPHospital is planning a 50th Anniversary event, June 5-11. More details later.
Elnora Hingtgen, age 84, of Maquoketa, died this morning at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa. She is survived by her husband Al and 2 daughters, who do not live in Maquoketa.
Margaret Gombert, 84, of Maquoketa and formerly of Lost Nation, died today at the Maquoketa Care Center. She is survived by 2 daughters, including Dianne Rockwell of Maquoketa and a brother, Clifford Casteel of Maquoketa.
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

I lost $4 on the President Casino today....at one time..was up $90. Had a full bus and all had a good time. Judy Sheckel celebrated her birthday on the trip.
The Maquoketa River has been tapped as the worst of 13 comparable rivers in the Upper Midwest for contributing sediment and chemicals into the Mississippi River. Farmers, contractors and landowners will be asked to clean up the problem, voluntarily, or expect legislation.
Iowa's First Lady, Christie Vilsack (D) will visit the Maquoketa Library next Wednesday afternoon while making a swing through Eastern Iowa. She will be there at 3:45..for 45 minutes.
Maquoketa Police is investigating 2 thefts. Shirley Winegar (the Chicago Cub fan) had a lawn ornament stolen and Tracy Lane is missing 3 necklaces valued at $845.
A Maquoketa man ran a stop light and struck car driven by Marianne Wendel. He was charged. No injuries.
DOC KOOB IS BROADCASTING WRESTLING FROM VETS AUDITORIUM RIGHT NOW..AND TOMORROW, I WILL HAVE RESULTS.

Mostly cloudy and around 60 today in Eastern Iowa...and this weather is set to hang around thru the weekend, with rain included.
The Personnel Committee of the Maquoketa Council met yesterday and instructed the City Manager to write a letter to all the Lawyers and Law Firms in Maquoketa, asking if they are interested in the job of Maquoketa City Attorney, to replace Mike Kane who has resigned to move to Colorado. Councilmen will go out of town to fill the position if no one locally is interested. Also at the Council meeting last night, Police Chief Bob Anderson appeared and talked about the problem of finding policemen and asking for a new wage scale that would be higher for Maquoketa's department. The Council wants more information. Rumor has it that one of the Maquoketa Policemen is thinking about working for the Muscatine department, and the reason he would take the job is for more money. He's one of the newem members of Maquoketa's force.
Jackson County Hospital Employees will receive an average 6.1 percent raise increase. Also the Board of the Hospital accepted the resignation of Mike Kane from the Board...and was informed that Board Member Dave Johnson will not seek re-election to the Board this November. He is in his 18th year. So, the Hospital will need two candidates.
The DeWitt Girls, #10 in State, won last night and face Washington, ranked #2, this Saturday night. The #1 Preston Girls won big last night and also winning, the North Cedar girls....so as of now, we have 3 girl's teams that still have a chance to make it to the State Tournament.
Yesterday I had a tour of the new Necker's Jewelry store on the corner in downtown DeWitt ..and..it has to be one of the finest stores in the midwest.
Nothing else for today.

Sunny and warm..in the mid 50's today.
John Henderson, age 74, died Friday in Dade City, Florida, where he lived in the winter. A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa later this Spring. He was named Jackson County Extensin Director in 1951 and served in that position for 37 years. For more than 20 years, he did the daily RFD 1320 farm show on KMAQ-AM. He was a longtime member of the Maquoketa Rotary Club and served on numerous ag-related boards and committees. He is survived by his wife Betty and they have a Condo here in Maquoketa. Also survived by 3 children, Kent in Vermont, Lynn in St. Louis, and Marcia in Pennsylvania. John was a humble, caring, great guy. I enjoyed working with him for all the years he was at KMAQ, except the 2 years I was in the Army. I remember well the day then-KMAQ-Owner Nate Goetz and I went down to his office across from the ballpark and approached him with the idea that he do the daily farm show. He was reluctant at first, but then decided to do it...and he did it well.."live" every morning, Monday thru Friday. He took no pay for this, but we sent a monthly check to the Extension 4-H Fund instead. JOHN HENDERSON WAS A FINE GENTLEMAN.
The City Council met last night and it was a short meeting. The Council decided to keep the sidewalk building project going this year. They also directed the City Engineers to come up with a plan for a NEW city street that would connect old 6l South through some farm fields with East Summitt Street. I'm not sure exacty where it would run and reason for it, so I'll check more and bring you more information later.
And..that's it for today.

50's today....lots of snow melting. All week long will be on the warm side.
Maquoketa will be represented by 2 wrestlers at the State Wrestling Tournament, starting Thursday in Des Moines. Freshman Derek Fuglsang, and Junior Cole Pape. Derek will wrestle a State Champion from Muscatine-Louisa. He was Champ at the weight below last year. Cole has been a State Champ the past two years. DeWitt will have 3 wrestlers out there and Northeast 1. So, we'll be covering 6 Class 2-A graplers at Vet's Auditorium.
The Maquoketa Cardinals, in boy's basketball, closed the regular season Saturday night, loosing by around 15 points, to a good Bettendorf team. They will play their first Tournament game one week from tonight, here at home, against Davenport Assumption.
After 25 years in Maquoketa and 12 of them as City Attorney, Mike Kane will be closing his private law practice to move to Colorado. He plans to close his office on South 2nd Street (across from old part of library) on March 24th and will be joining a law firm in Lakewood, Colorado. He said he and his wife Kathleen will be moving within the next couple of months. Kathleen is originally from Lakewood, but the couple plans to live in Evergreen, just North of Lakewood. I heard their children also live in the area. The City Council at their meeting tonight will receive the resignation. He is also City Attorney for Monticello, Lost Nation, Bernard and Lowden. He came to Maquoketa in 1975 and joined the Sokol Law Firm. A year later he went on his own. In 1977 he was named Trust Officer for Jackson State Bank and then in 1978 he was appointed County Attorney and held that position until 1987 when he went to provate practice. He has been City Attorney, a part time job, since 1988. He office is in the building that for many years was the Sagers and MacCausland Insurance office, a choice downtown location. I assume he owns that building and that he will put it for sale.
Rachel Knapp-Clark and Brent Clark of Maquoketa are parents of a boy born Saturday at the J.C.P.Hospital.
Had a good trip yesterday to the Patsy Cline Tribute Show at the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. The theatre was full. Have another trip to see ON GOLDEN POND up there in mid June. KMAQ Travel also is sponsoring a 4-day Bus Trip to Branson in early June.
SPOUSE NIGHT tonight for the Maquoketa Rotary Club. We enjoy a Chinese Buffet at the GREAT WALL CHINESE RESTAURANT and then walk over to the theatre for a new Walter Mathau comedy. GREAT restaurant and GREAT theatre should make a GREAT night for the Rotary.
City Council meeting tonight....so should have some news from it tomorrow.

SUNNY MORNING AND WARM...40 AT NOON.
MARY HAINSTOCK, CURRICULUM DIRECTOR FOR THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT, RESIGNED THAT POSITION LAST NIGHT TO TAKE THE "DEAN OF STUDENTS" POSITION AT CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE. SHE AND HER HUSBAND ALSO ARE PLANNING TO BUILD A GOLF COURSE ON THEIR FARM ACREAGE JUST SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA.
ALSO AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING LAST NIGHT, THE IDEA TO HAVE A LOTTERY DRAWING TO DETERMINE WHAT CHILDREN WOULD ATTEND EITHER CARDINAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OR BRIGG'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL...WAS DROPPED. IT MET LOTS OF OPPOSITION FROM NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER BRAD MILLER OF MAQUOKETA. MANY BELIEVE SMARTER STUDENTS ATTEND BRIGGS AND THAT SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS BELIEVED IMBALANCE. ONE IDEA VOTED DOWN LAST YEAR WAS TO MAKE ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR K-2 AND THE OTEHR GRADES 3-5. I THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA, BUT SOME TEACHERS AND PARENTS OPPOSED THAT IDEA TOO. SO, AFTER LAST NIGHT'S MEETING, BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.
GOT E-MAIL FROM FRIEND JERRY RASMUSSEN, WINTERING DOWN SOUTH, SAYING HE ENJOYS THIS DAILY REPORT. JERRY AND DOROTHY WILL BE BACK IN MARCH OR APRIL. JERRY....THE NEW BRAD DEERY BUILDING IS COMING ALONG NICELY...ROOF IS ON AND SIDES GOING UP NOW. AND YOU SHOULD SEE THE CORNER ACROSS FROM CITY HALL WITH ALL THOSE BUILDINGS GONE. LOOKS GOOD. ONE MORE THING...WHEN YOU GET HOME, YOU'LL NEED TO GET THAT SALVATION ARMY BUILDING MOVED TO THE PARK. THE MONEY HAS BEEN RAISED TO MAKE IT INTO MAQUOKETA'S NEW "WELCOME CENTER". JERRY,IS KNOWN AROUND HERE AS THE DOWNTOWN RENOVATOR, FOR BRAD DEERY MOTORS.
JUNIOR SAUNDERS, AGE 71, DIED OVERNIGHT. HE IS THE FATHER OF LONGTIME KMAQ ANNOUNCER JIMMY SAUNDERS. I'LL HAVE MORE ON HIS OBITUARY TOMORROW.
THE KMAQ WEB SITE, UNDER "MEET THE STAFF" HAS SOME NEW PICTURES OF OLD AND NEW STAFF MEMBERS. TAKE A LOOK. A COUPLE STILL NEED TO BE ADDED.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY. Nancy and I had dinner tonight at THE GREAT WALL CHINESE RESTAURANT, here in town. Good food and they were busy.
Edward Demoss, age 20, of Monmouth was charged with intoxication and possession of drug paraphenalia and with assaualt after being involved in a fight at 12:15 A.M. Saturday at FIFE'S on East Platt. He kicked and punched Doug Said and was beligerant when officers arrived. His blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit and he has a marijuana pipe on him when searched.
Five Maquoketa groups and Camp Courageous at Monticello will split just over $750,000 from the estate of the late Betty Nissen Jetter. To get money: The Library. The Maquoketa Foundation. The Methodist Church. DAC, Inc.(a non-profit organization serving those with disabilities) and the Historical Society. She and her first husband ran a dry cleaners shop accross from the Post Office. She also worked at Maquoketa State Bank in later years.
A Sabula man, Douglas Sandholt, age 49, apparently didn't like the jukebox music Friday night at the HOMEPORT BAR in town. He left, about 8:30 and returned with a shotgun...and shot the jukebox, causing $2,000 damage. He left the place and was arrested a short time later at his home. He was charged with criminal mischief, public intoxication and reckless use of a firearm.
Ryan Garien, age 17, flipped his car Saturday morning. He was driving a mile Northeast of Maquoketa when the car went off the road, went 80 feet, hit a farm drive, went airborne another 130 feet and rolled end over end, coming to rest on its top....damage to car, about $7,000. He and a passenger were treated for minor injuries at the local hospital. He was charged with failure to have control. No kiddin'.
Paul and Sue Fix of Minneapolis had a boy Saturday. Grandparents are Rich and Faye Fix of Maquoketa.

About 2 inches of snow to shovel today...mostly came last night with light snow falling rest of today...ended now.
Nice to hear from friend Bill Upmeyer down South (in Florida)for the winter...as has been custom for he and Audrey for many years. Bill misses our snow a little, I'm sure. He was County Engineer here for many years...so knows the ins and outs of the snow business. We were both in the Lions Club before it folded.
The Maquoketa Wrestlers did WELL in the "sectional" tournament here in Maquoketa Saturday. In fact, they took the team event. And 7 wrestlers took a 1st or 2nd and advance to "regionals" next. Saturday, winning for Maquoketa, two-time State Champion Cole Pape, a Junior, winning by a major decision 11 to 1. Also advancing to the "regionals" ...Casey Taylor at 135 pounds...Luke Gorney at 103...Derek Fuglsang at 112...Luke Schau, 119....Abe Dostal at 189 and heavyweight Rob Hayes. Maquoketa, by winning the Team Event Saturday, advances to the Regional Duals this coming Tuesday night, when the entire team wrestlers always-powerful Davenport Assumption. Tuesday night, I was planning to go to Monticello to see Bill Flemming win his 500th game, but now, I and Doc Koob will broadcast the Maquoketa versus Davenport Assumption Dual Meet that night from the Maquoketa gym.
It is 8 P.M. and guess I'll go home and get set to watch the BEST show on TV..every Sunday at 9...THE PRACTICE. I watch very little TV, but hardly ever miss THE PRACTICE.

Mostly cloudy and a high of 30 today. Snow in the forecast for tonight.
Bill Flemming did NOT get his 500th win last night. In the final second, Maquoketa, here at home, lost to Anamosa, 50 to 48..on a lay-up after Maquoketa missed two free throws. You might say, the last chance for him to get the 500th will be next Tuesday night when the Cardinals play at Monticello, in last place in the Big Bend. A week from tonight, they play hard-to-beat Bettendorf, at the Maquoketa gym. Then tournament play follows. Will Flemming end his career at 499 or hit 500 or more?? I'll keep you posted of course. At last night's game was his fiance'...a lawyer from Des Moines, and her two daughters. After the parents received their Parent's Night Rose, Bill introduced his June bride-to-be, presented her with a Rose and a Hug. I know, this report is now starting to sound like a Soap Opera. More about Flemming's wedding on a later report.
The Wrestlers participated in SECTIONAL competition today at the Maquoketa Gym, but I have no results yet. Will have them for you tomorrow.
The Maquoketa girls lost last night at Anamosa.
A Maquoketa woman was hit by a car at the Platt & Main intersection just before noon yesterday. She was walking on GREEN WALK, so the driver from Sherrill, Iowa was charged. Taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries was Tammy Truitt, age 35, of Maquoketa.
