Nice day today, sunny and high in 20's.
Bad fire around midnight last night at 320 N. Main Street, in a 3-apartment home owned by Dennis Storlie. A Maquoketa Police Officer, Mark Manders, was treated and released at the hospital from minor injuries he received when helping some residents out of the burning house. Fire Chief Mark Beck said the house received extensive smoke and water damage and it not liveable. Cause of the fire appears to not be suspicious. Firemen were at the scene 3 hours and 2 hours cleaning up.
A teenage male, wearing a ski mask walked into the Country Store in Preston around 9 last night ..holding a crowbar, and he damanded money from the clerk. No money was obtained and he fled out the door.

Mostly cloudy and high of 24 today.
Last night, at the Jackson County Democratic Caucaus sites, Bradley was our winner, garnering just over 50 percent of the votes. The Vice President just under 50 percent. Bush was the Jackson County Republican winner as he was everywhere else, with Forbes placing 2nd. The 2nd Ward of Maquoketa met in the small Court Room to the back of the Courthouse. I didn't know it was there. It had only a few chairs, so we had to find extra ones. We had 20 at our meeting site. Vera Randall was the Temporary Chairperson until she was elected Permanent Chair. At our meeting were these good Democrat residents of Maquoketa: Vera Randall, Rick and Pat Decker, Konrad Murphy, Dana Widel, Dick Roach, son Seth Roach, a MCHS Senior, Virginia Powelka, Jean Holtz,Willis Bramer, and other people I did't know, including some newcomers to Maquoketa. Of our 20, 8 were for Bradley and the other for Gore. Our meeting lasted nearly an hour, but with enough chairs at the start and better preparation, it could have been over in a half hour. Oh yes, we approved one resolution to forward to the County Convention next month at the Maquoketa Community Center. It calls for a Term Limit for U.S.Senators of 3 six year terms in office. Not a bad idea, but I think 4 would maybe be better. Also, at our meeting, delegates were elected to attend the County Convention and one other meeting. Also,we were to find two that would service on the Democratic Central Committee for Jackson County. I volunteered, as did Randall. I have never served on that Committee before. Vera passed around an envelope for anyone that wished to donate to the Jackson County Democratic treasury. I saw no one put money it it, but I really wasn't watching closely. I'm not sure how valuable the Iowa Caucus system is NATIONALLY.....but it is good for Iowa. Lots of money is spent in the Hawkeye State leading up to last nights finals and Iowa does get plenty of media coverage and publicity. THERE, thought you might like to know what it was like to be a participant last night in Act 1 of a 2000 play that results in one person making a hugh curtain call on election eve next November. If I were to bet with someone now, 10 months prior to the election, I would bet on Gore. I think he is the front runner now, ahead of Bush.
I went with a busload of people to the President Casino today. Ready for a SHOCKER.....I lost. We had fun though and had a good lunch buffet.
Short notes...the Christmas decorations are still up in downtown Maquoketa.... they are adding on to Dr. Rask's office...the new Sabula Lottery Winner purchased a new truck to park along side the new Caddie....Sacred Heart Catholic Church is remodeling....Audrey Heim was 80 today...and there was a bad fire in Preston today, house fire, and no one injured.
TILL TOMORROW THEN...

Springlike day in Maquoketa...sunny and high of 39. But, 2 to 4 inches of snow in the forecast for tomorrow.
Again.. not much news. No births or deathes.
City Council meeting last night was routine and short. Lots of appointments made to city Boards. One controversial. Don Small has been a member of the Maquoketa Municipal Electric Light and Power Board for a long time and his term has expired. He asked to be appointed for another 6 year term, but the Mayor has so far refused to do it, despite being backed by fellow Board member Sharon Rettig and three Maquoketa Councilmen. Mayor Rosenberg said he will make the appointment at the next Council meeting...and my guess is, it will be Small, unless Small should pull his name from consideration. I'll keep you posted.
Remember which building was used for the Pamida Store when it came to town a long time ago? It was first known as GIBSON'S. The building on the corner, one block East of Main on Platt, across from Tandem Tire, which for many years was Harris Penrose Company. That corner building has been used the last couple years for a car wash and wax place. The building is old and not in very good shape and not very pretty. Well, the word is....it has been sold...will be torn down and a new office building will be buildt in its place. More later. That would be a definite improvement to downtown Maquoketa.
Maquoketa Cardinal girls basketball team will host Cascade tonight. Will have the outcome for you tomorrow.

Sunny, real windy and a high of 28 today.
The fund to move the old Salvation Army Citadel, just South of the Post Office, to Horseshoe Pond Park, is nearing $7,000. Alvin and Vera Barten are spearheading the fund-raising drive. It will take abut $10,000 to move it and then extra money for a basement, rest rooms, etc. The plan is to use it for a "Welcome" center at the South entrance to Maquoketa off of 4-lane highway 61. The Boy Scouts are interested in being envolved and would use the meeting room for their meetings. The building has historical meaning because it was the first and oldest Citadel WEST of the Mississippi River. Make your check out to City of Maquoketa and send it to City Hall, Maquoketa, Iowa. Mark on it that it is for Citadel Fund.

Partly cloudy and in the mid 30's....and predictions of a high around 60 by Sunday. Charles Mitchell, who moved to Maquoketa (with wife, the former Bonnie Wells..and daughter) from San Diego, still thinks its too cold here. Wait till we get down to 10 or more below General...that's when it is fun to be an Iowan in the winter.
Lots of excitement around here...
Saturday night's Lottery Jackpot won by a Sabula resident, Larry Hasken, age 59....31.8 million. Today, the family went to Des Moines to get their checks. I've heard the money will be split 5 ways...Larry, his wife, and 3 children....so..if I have this straight, they will each come home with a check of over 3-million, after taxes. Mrs. Hasken was originally from Bellevue and graduated from Bellevue Marquette. Larry's car had over 200-thousand miles on it. Monday, he called Duane Hansen at Brad Deery Motors about a new car. Duane, a salesman there, and Larry are both model railroad buffs and new each other from going to railroad events. Yesterday, Hasken picked up his new 2000 Caddie, a $42,000 car. And the car dealership had the showroom decorated and free cake...and we did a radio ramote from there. The family went to Des Moines today with a limo from a limo service in Preston. There are two married sons, under and over 30, with 6 grandkids and an unmarried daughter that works in Illinois.
Went to Rotary Club meeting at noon and won $5 in the weekly lottery, to raise money for scholarships. Charles Mitchell won the other $5. We have a new Treasurer for Rotary.....Asher Schroeder. Takes over for Mike Wold, who has been transferred in his job. Will hate to see Mike leave the Club....he's been a good member.
Maquoketa School District is getting video cameras to monitor students. The School Board gave approval this week, with final vote to be taken at January 3lst meeting. Middle school will get the first eight this year, at a cost of about $1,500 with installation done by school personnel. Later, probably not until next year, Briggs and Cardinal may each get 4 cameras and the High School, 6 to 8. No cameras in rest rooms or shower rooms and the tapes would be used for disciplinary actions and viewed only by Administrators or Police, as needed.
The JACKSON COUNTY COMPENSATION BOARD, met last night and will be recommending approximately 5% increased salaries for County Elected Officials.
In basketball last night, the Cardinal boys won there home game over Dyersville, 58 to 55 to break a 3-game loosing streak.

A Sabula man, 59-year-old, Larry Haskin, won Iowa's Largest Lottery jackpotSaturday night, nearly 32-million dollars. He bought the winning ticket at Ackerman's Pharmacy in Sabula Thursday. He has worked for the railroad for 30 years and his hobby is model railroading. He will take the option of all the money at once and then after taxes will have around 16-million. He and wife have 3 grown children, one who worked with him at the railroad. He and his wife plan to share the winnings with the children and his car, with over 200 thousand miles, will be retired in favor of a new Caddie. They will continue to live in Sabula. We interviewed him for KMAQ news and he a nice guy. He didn't to back to work this morning and will go to Des Moines in a day or two to pick up his check. About 10 years ago, a Maquoketa couple won 19-million and another Maquoketa won around 3 million.
A Moline couple, Dr. and Mrs. James Kopel, today at a new conference at Maquoketa City Hall, announced that they are giving $l20,000 to the Maquoketa Fine Arts Building (a large 700 seat auditorium). He is a former college professor and the couple like Maquoketa and think it is a good project. He worked with Gary Drew of Maquoketa. The total raised now exceeds $200,000. Work started on the building footings last fall, across the street from the fairgrounds on East Platts. A local group is spearheading the drive, headed by Gary Drew. Also on his Board are: Dean Schmidt , Darwin Polk, Jim Babeshoff, Dave Hovey, Curt Gruver, and Randy Koskovich. They need over a half-million to building the building and hope for about an equal amount or more for the FOUNDATION that will provide the funds to run and maintain it forever.
Maquoketa like other parts of the Country, has been hit by the FLU>
The Maquoketa wrestlers DID have a wrestling meet Saturday at Sycamore, Illinois....with 17 teams participating. Maquoketa as a team placed 7th. Travis Saunders at 130 pounds, got a 2nd and Derek Fuglsang, at 112 pounds, a 3rd.

No big news...as is the case generally on Sunday.
Robert "Bob" Earl Russell, age 64, of Guttenberg and formerly of Maquoketa, died Thursday at the Guttenberg hospital. Services and burial (in Sacred Heart Cemetery) in Maquoketa Monday. He is survived by his wife Jeanette, 4 daughters, including Barb Russell of Maquoketa....and 5 sons, none from Maquoketa.....and 2 brothers, including Darrell of Maquoketa.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK...GET THE NEW YEAR OF WORK OFF TO A GREAT START.

Nice day...high 44.
No Y2K problems in Maquoketa.
Fire at 4 this morning at RUMOR'S RESTAURANT at Leisure Lake, near Otter Creek, North of Maquoketa. Started in one of the dining rooms. Bernard Fire Department called and asked for assistance from other departments, including Maquoketa. Mostly smoke damage.
Republican Presidential Candidate Dave Bauer is making an appearance in Maquoketa Monday afternoon at the Community Center.
Kids go back to school Monday.
A year ago, we got 20 inches of snow at the end of the New Year Holiday.
Went to the movie ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY this afternoon....good show for football fans. Even though I own the theatre, I go to about 1 in 8 movies...not a comedy fan for one thing, so that eliminates many. I see more movies during the summer when the drive-in is open. Again this year, Tom and Pam Peckosh and Pat and Joan Costello were my top movie goers..seeing almost every movie.
Nancy took down our tree today and I took the Santa and Reindeer out of the front yard....the Holidays are over.
Hope you had a great Holiday ...
So much for today.
