39 degrees and sunny on this last day of November.

The burning ban continues in Jackson County but has been lifted in Clinton County.

A City Council Committee meeting was held last night and was televised on Access Channel 22....it lasted 90-minutes and drew a couple TV stations. What was it about? The possibility of a no-smoking in Maquoketa restaurants ORDINACE. Controversial! Most restaurants don't want it..for fear of loss of business. Those who smoke are against it. Many are opposed to government getting involved in one more thing. Etc.Etc. As a restaurant owner...I have no strong feeling....but believe if not now...sometime soon...it will come. Anyway...the Committee now decides on whether or not to recommend anything to the entire Council. They will do that soon, before the next regular meeting. Let's say the Committee recomends passing a no-smoking ordinace. The city then has to decide, and if that is the route they will take, it will take 3 readings before becoming law. So...if we are to have the Ordiance for Maquoketa, it is at least 2 months off. I'll keep you posted.

MANY, MANY VEHICLE-DEER ACCIDENTS AGAIN THIS FALL..THE MATING SEASON.
Last night, 3 teenagers were injured following an accident involving a deer. Taken to the JCPH in Maquokta by ambulance were Jesse Schaller, age 18, of Maquoketa....Chad Hotler, age 17, of Baldwin, and Jeremy LaFrenz, age 16, of Maquoketa. All 3 were admitted for observation and then released. Sheriff's deputies say Shaller was driving South ond 230th Street around 6 last night, north of LaMotte and a deer jumped from the ditch. Schaller lost control and the car overturned into a ditch. $5,500 damage to the car.

Rex Nabb, age 78, of Monmouth, died Monday morning at a Cedar Rapids hospital. Well known in this area. Was a farmer until retiring in 1979....then became a realtor for many years. Past member of the County Conservation Board, the County Board of Adjustment and others.
Rex and wife Dorothy went on the 10-day KMAQ trip to Las Vegas this past March. Nice people. He his survived by his wife, 1 daughter and 2 sons. A sister in Maqoketa is Camilla Siders.

THE COTTAGE opens at 8 tomorrow morning. Owners, Karen Thomas and Nancy Voy. More later.

Koreen Schork, left KMAQ'S sales department today to go into business with her father...detailing and selling cars. We'll miss her.
Lori Kilburg of Bellevue starts tomorrow, taking Koreen's desk and account list. The other 3 sales reps, Dottie Bayles, Roxanne Clausing and Nancy Moore, organized a noon Pizza farewell lunch for her today. Good luck Koreen and Welcome Lori.

The high school basketball season starts tonight on KMAQ-FM with a Maquoketa Cardinal girl's game here at the MCHS gym....Bob Warner at the PBP mike.

HAPPY DECEMBER.

Had a good trip to the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson yesterday....sat next to Dick Ward on the bus, up and back, so am up to date on his family and life. His wife, Linda, was along but she sat with another lady. Dick is 62 and has been a Sheriff's Deputy (a good one) here in Jackson County for many years. Thinks he'll go another 3 years. One son in California (LA area fireman) and one in Dallas, both not married...and a daughter in K.C. Missouri and I forgot where other daughter lives. Has 4 grandkids. Also sat near Don Atkinson...now retired. Ran THE VILLAGE BLACKSMITH about 20 years ago...now HOV'S PUB. He is divorced and has some health problems, but looks good. We all ate too much at the Fireside Brunch....darn good food. Show was okay, but not the best Christmas show they have had.

Fire yesterday in Maquoketa. In Ben Bagwell's garage on South Olive in Maquoketa. Started in a trash can. $2,500 in damages to the garage and $15,000 to the vintage Harley Ben was restoring...the cycle was destroyed.

Remember the egg-throwing arrest I reported here last week? Add a 4th name to those involved. Jonathon Evers of Maquoketa...age 19. He was charged in Magistrate Court.

Hilma Joles, age 84, died yesterday at Good Samaritan Home in Davenport. She was the Maquoketa Public Librarian for l7 years, retiring in 1981. No local survivors....services Wednesday and burial will be at Mt. Hope here in town.

Nice sunny day.

The City of Maquoketa had an Engineering firm look into what it would cost to extend Myatt Drive (behind Happy Joe's) Northerly to Wal Mart.
At Monday night's meeting, the Cost Estimate was given at 1.2 million dollars, not even including cost of right-of-way. Good idea to take the traffic off of Platt Street...but I'm sure it won't fly at that cost.

Wilma E. Bowman, of Maquoketa, age 95, died today at a retirement home in Davenport. I believe her late husband was Jackson County Engineer in the 50's or later. Services pending at Haylock, O'Hara and Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Beautiful day...sunny and high of 58. A 90% chance of rain tomorrow. Sure would be nice.

Maquoketa City Council meeting tonight...basically about issues involving new Industries.

I'm a 4-H member! At the Jackson County 4-H Annual Recognition Banquet (potluck, with tons of food) last night at the fairgrounds, I was made an Honorary Jackson County 4-H member......will be hanging a nice plaque in my office. The 4-H Family of the year...the Arnold and Liz Lindstrom family of rural Maquoketa....all 4 of their kids were in 4-H. The LEADER of the year award went to the County 4-H Program Assistant, Judy Connally. She got a standing ovation.
Nice night.....as I said in my "thank you comments"....the Country would be much better if every kid had to join a 4-H Club.

Charges are pending against a Maquoketa teen-ager after he allegedly stole a car and then totalled it in an accident Friday night. Jason Mays, age 16, was in the accident around 11 Friday night just outside of Maquoketa. He was thrown from the car, airlifted to Iowa City and released from the hospital yesterday. The car was stolen Friday night, registered to Angela Koontz and Chad Hayes of Maquoketa. A Ford, total loss, estimated at just under $10,000.

A Clinton woman went to the hospital after a deer crashed through her windshield and hit her in the face. The deer was hit by a different auto and it send the deer flying into her car. Someone stole a $1,000 disc over the weekend from Dave Dostal.

Sage Rosenfels, of Maquoketa... quarterback for the Iowa State Cyclones, had his best day Saturday, even though his team lost.
He threw for 3 touchdowns and scored one himself.

Maquoketa girls play in a "half" of basketball game tonight in the Preston Jamboree, featuring 8 teams. Thier first action following two weeks of practice. The Cardinal boys have their first play of the year a week from tonight in a Jamboree. Coach Flemming's final year as coach.

Heard today that Dr. Paul Koob got a hold of some 50-yard tickets and saw the Packers win yesterday in Green Bay. Sat right behind the players. Great game...the PACK IS BACK.

And I'm out of here.

Had a good trip to Wisconsin yesterday...coming home, ran into huge traffic in the Madison area. Should have come home through Fort Atkinson,....where traffic is less.

Iowa's unemployment rate for October was 2.2 percent, second lowest in the country, behind New Hampshhire. Jackson County's in October, was up slightly from September, but way below a year ago.

Warm and nice today....got up to 69....1 degree short of the 1953 record. Rain and maybe snow in the forecast tomorrow afternoon and night.

Not much in the news. A Dubuque prisoner at the Jackson County Detention Center jumped the fence yesterday while on an exercise break and was caught shortly after.

A small fire up by the water tower was put out quickly yesterday afternoon.....the burning ban continues in Eastern Iowa.

Dub Romer is 80 tomorrow....longtime businessman in Maquoketa, in the roofing business (and siding and insulation)....still works some for his son Clay who now runs the business.....Dub in his pickup can be seen several times a day cruising Maquoketa...makes about 3 coffee-break groups each morning....in good health...a real good guy. He and wife Madeline were surprised by a party planned for last night by Clay at the Eagles. Guess he even danced to music by Red Henton. I was invited, but couldn't make it. Dub has been a KMAQ advertiser every week, almost daily, since KMAQ went on-the-air in 1958. Thanks Dub and Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday also tomorrow to Dude Reichling....longtime Phillips 66 Gas Station owner in Maquoketa, now retired and having some health problems. Wife Wilma has promoted a "card shower" for him this week.
Another good guy.....unfortunately a longtime Cubs fan.

I'm making a quick trip to see my folks in Horicon,Wisconsin tomorrow, so there will be no report tomorrow.

Will make every effort to have something for you Saturday.

Sunny monring and cloudy afternoon...high only 52 today.

I think things are back to normal regarding my computer and apparently, it wasn't the computer, but something else.

Since Generac, the big new Industry was anounced for Maquoketa....the City Economic Director, Linda Sturtz, has been busy filling requests for information on Maquoketa from four new industrial prospects and several retail propects. Linda told the City Council this week that there have been no committments, but the inquiries continue to
pour in. She also reported a Pipeline Company has rented the former Bernie's Sew & Save location for a temporary office and that a new building will be built by them next Spring out in the Industrial Park. Regarding housing, two more housing developers have contacted the city about possible projects. "Shoreline Developers" are planning a ribbon cutting and Open House on December 10th for the Condominium and Building Lots they have at the North edge of Maquoketa near the Maquoketa River, North of the hospital. She went on to say that Generac has contacted several local industries about supplying them with parts and services for their new Industry. And new WELCOME signs into Maquoketa are expected to be put up soon....one on Maquoketa Country Club grounds West of Maquoketa and the other will be placed South of town. Local sign man Jim Geronzin has desinged the signs which will be made of precast concrete.

Russell Streets, age 38 and Linda Streets, age 45, of Monmouth, were each charged with assault. Jackson County Sheriff Deputies say Thelma Yarolem said she was at the Quarterdeck in Baldwin Saturday night. She said Linda Streets hit her in the face with a drink glass and pulled her hair. She got away and was sitting on a bar stool when Russell Streets pulled her from the stool and hit her in the face.

The Eagles have announced that they are having a New Year"s Eve event at their Club on East Platt, formerly the Rendezvous.

Terry Clark, age 36, of Maquoketa died today at his home after a sudden illness.....I think heart attack. He is survived by his mother, Wanda Clark of Maquoketa....also 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

The city is buying a hay baler and next year, will use it to bale leaves. Maybe I told you that. Exciting.

And...that's it for today.

Sunny and nice, high of 51.

My computer is acting strange the last couple days. Last night, I
did up this daily report, and it would not go on the net.....I thought. So, I cussed a little and did a little shorter version and it also would NOT go up. An hour later, I brought up the daily on my Web TV back home...and there they BOTH were, double. I'm sure many of you noticed both the long and shorter report yesterday. I don't know.
I've been wanting my son Dave to move some of the "daily reports" to floppy disk, so they wouldn't have to be loaded every day. He puts it off daily. Please, if you have time, e-mail him and ask him to unload some of the "dailies"....he's at dvoy@maquoketa.com

City council met last night and more discussion on what to do about the unused buildings at Clinton Engines. They decided to advertise for bids for demolitoin of the old building. They will be opened at the first December meeting and it sounds that if the bids are lower than the $250,000 estimate, they might decide to accept the land from Clinton Engines, tear down the buildings, clean up the ground and use the site for future new industry.

We are loosing an Industry in the Industrial Park. S & H ....for many years, now TI Group Auto, announced today they will close the plant across from Woodform....that employs 60 and has been in Maquoketa since l99l. It will close in February. But, it should be a building that could easily be sold to another industry. Good building and location.

Excavation work on the new Industrial site South of town, where the big new Industry will locate, has started. They are moving dirt like crazy out there.

Ruth Willey, age 95, died yesterday at the local hospital. She is
survived by 1 daughter, Phyllis Willey of Maquoketa and 1 sister, Hazel Sackman of Maquoketa.

The OLD TIME TURKEY SHOOTS begin again on KMAQ tomorrow. We have been doing those before Thanksgiving for over 35 years. If you ever lived in Maquoketa and listened to KMAQ, you have heard them.

Brad Deery Motors is adding on to their shop building, which is only a couple years old. Work started this week.

Time to end this for another day. Thanks for the visit.

Sunshine this monring but then the sun left us at mid-morning and with cloudy skies, we are now in the 40's only. Not near as nice as Sliver has it down in Yuma.

Have you been checking the KMAQ Guest Book regularly. There have been quite a few entries this month. Sometimes, there are 2 or 3 new ones a day. They are interesting and most are from former Maquoketa residents now living around the world. And if YOU still have not made an entry about yourself, DO IT.

A Maquoketa elementary school teacher has been charged with drunk driving, theft, assault and reckless driving from an incident Saturday morning. Charged was Frank Randall, age 56, a teacher at Cardinal elementary for quite a few years. He was released this morning from the detention center after posting $10,000 cash bond. Here's what happened. He was at the Arlene McCutcheon residence early Saturday evening at rural Maquoketa and apparently got into an arguement and hit Earl Kunde in the face and then took McCutcheon's tractor and began to drive off. They attempted to stop Randall from leaving the property, but he kept going. The Sheriff's department was called and Deputy Schroeder met Randall on the highway near the Iron Bridge Road. Randall stopped the tractor but refused to turn off the engine and also refused to return it to the owner. When the deputy tried to turn the key off, Randall slapped his hand away and drove off nearly hitting the deputy with the back wheel of the tractor. Eventually Randall stopped at a farm drive and he was tested for alcohol level which registered .115 with .10 as the legal limit. Randall's case will be bound over to District Court. He was not at school today and Supt. Montang said Randall has been placed on administrative leave.

THIS IS AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK.

Robert Melow of Maquoketa was charged with false imprisonment, assault with intent to cause sexual abuse and domestic abuse.

Maquoketa Police say he allegedly assaulted his wife several times throughout the night on Friday, including throwing her to the floor, banging her head on the floor, choking her and threatening to kill her. At one point, she ran out of the house, but he dragged her back inside. He also sexually assaulted her and she finially got out of the house and called police. He in the detention center here in town on a $10,000 bond.

   Day: SUNDAY

Daily Report

Date: 11/14/99, 7:19 PM

Sunny and nice day again...but high only in mid 50's.
Next weekend, they are predicting cold, maybe slight snow.

Not much new. KMAQ Sales Staff was at DeWitt Expo today(had a table), where DeWitt merchants were kicking off the Christmas season in DeWitt. I stopped in this afternoon and found out they had a nice turnout for the event. McAvan Appliance had the biggest display in the Community Center, one of two places the Expo was being held, the other being the KP Hall down the street. They were roasting a turkey in one of their stoves (to be given to charity event) and also baking cookies to share. Good! Also drove by, but didn't stop in, at Necker's Jewelers NEW downtown store in DeWitt. What a store! Grand Opening is next weekend. Here in Maquoketa, merchants also kicked-off the season with HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS. I haven't heard how it went.

Maquoketa is getting a new store, THE COTTAGE. Located on North Main Street, where Bob's Electronics Store was earlier this year.
In past years, it was home of Sears, then JC Penny Catalog and for many earlier years (Ron Reif will rememher) it was location of Manning's Meat Market. I don't know much about this new store. The sign is up and in the window, another sign says....WHERE FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEET and under it says, FOOD AND GIFTS. I'll see if I can find out more about it and let you know.

Iowa LOST again to powerful Wisconsin. Over the years, that game has always gone right for me. If Iowa won, I was very happy and if Wisconsin won, I was also happy, being a Badger at birth and also one who attended that great University in Madison. So, I am delighted the Badgers, and their former Hawkeye Coach, will be going again to the Rose Bowl.

Two well known Maquoketa men died today. Bill Brooks and Junior Hicks. I'll have more tomorrow on both.

HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

Daily Report

Date: 11/12/99, 6:38 PM

After a couple cloudy, cooler days, today was again nice, with a high in the 60's and tomorrow, should be in the 70's and we could break a record again. Broke two records already thisa week.

Duane Hansen was re-elected Fair Board President at the annual meeting last night. He's been a hard worker and good Prez. Still a car salesman at Brad Deery Motors. Mike Franzen of rural Monmouth, is the new Vice-President. And Lee Johnson, rural Andrew, is the new Secretary-Treasurer. Mike has his own farm equipment repair business and Lee is with Cornelus Seed Corn Company. $l22,000 was spent for fairgrounds improvements the past year, for cement work, equipment, etc. More than usual and therefore a rare loss for the year was reported, of $l8,000. Tom Calahan is Fairboard fulltime paid Manager.

The Maquoketa Volunteer Firemen will have a Las Vegas Night at the fire station the night of November 20th with proceeds going to longtime fireman Leo Clasen, who has Cancer.

No deaths to report....no babies...it has been a slow news week.,.

Daily Report

Another record breaking day.

DeWitt lost their playoff game last night ...at the UNI Dome, to New Hampton.

Had lunch today with St.Rep. Bob Osterhaus. Ann and Bob leave Sunday for Australia, to visit daughter Meg and family. Will be gone for 2 weeks. His first visit there. 27-hour flight.

More on the burglary and chase the other day. See earlier story I wrote. Brian Sutton remains in jail on $35,000 bond. Turns out his car was stolen in Baldwin. He took $180 from Digital Concepts computer store on West Platt. And..listen to this. When he drove away from Banowetz Antiques, a local officer fired a shot at his truck. Shot was to disable the vehicle. He missed. Chase then begun and Sutton lost control and went into the ditch. Just like the old Clint Eastwood movies.

At school board meeting last night, Prin. Huckstadt asked for permission to have kids spend time after school if they don't get their assignments turned-in. He said there are growing numbers of his Middle School students who are now completing their assignments, even if the teacher provides time in class. He said up to 25% of the students are NOT getting their work done. His thought is that they could be kept up to 45-minutes after school and if they still failed a class, they could make it up during summer. Who pays the extra cost to do this? More study will be done. Poor kids. There could go more video-games or Internet fun.

Tammy and Fred Steines of Maquoketa has a boy yesterday at the JCPH here in Maquoketa.

Chicken POT PIES are back at KFC here.....emmmmmmmm good.

See ya.

Terrific day...and weather is expected to continue like it is until at least mid=week...

Iowa Hawks lost again today...

Iowa Basketball team won last night. MCHS Grad, Mac McCausland,
is back this year doing the "color" for Hawkeye TV broadcasts.
Son Kent, A STAR last year with the Hawkeyes, is trying to make the Quad City Thunder pro team. Mac SR. is living in a Nursing Home in town and doing pretty well.

A Maquoketa man, Brian Sutton, age 21, last night made lots of noise here in town around 9:30. First, broke into the Sturtz Vet clinic..Doc Walt caught him in the act, and off he went with stocking cap in a beatup pickup. Turns out, he also burglarized Banowetz Antiques (and possibly the computer store on West Platt)....anyway...police spotted pickup and began chase...pickup lost control at high speed West on 64...went into ditch and overturned.
Rescue squad took 20+ minutes to get him out and then he was taken to the hospital, treated, then to jail and now faces 6 or 8 charges. I beleive he remains in jail pending court appearance.
Then, soon after, a head-on accident on 64 near Joinerville West of town...three taken to hospital..one with air-care. But, we were unable to get report on accident from the State Trooper who investigated.
LOTS OF SIRENS IN MAQUOKETA FOR AWHILE LAST NIGHT!

Nice day again...high 62.

If the City of Maquoketa goes ahead with the deal to accept the Clinton Engines 12 acres, as a gift from the owner (so he can get a tax write-off) it will cost the City around a half-million dollars to clean-up the site. The Council heard this report at a special meeting last night from the engineers that did a study for the city at a cost of $22,000. Maquoketa would like to see that area of town cleaned up...and it could use that site for new industry....but the cost is higher than expected....more discussion coming before a final decision.

DeWitt won their Play-Off football game over Marion last night 21 to 0 and now play another game at 8:30 Monday night at the UNI Dome at Cedar Falls...against New Hampton. We'll broadcast it of course.
