Light rain all day....9/l0 of an inch...and more tonight and tomorrow...but we needed it.

Chris Goodall, age 16, of Delmar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Goodall, was accidentally shot in his right buttocks this weekend, with a 410
guage shotgun. He and two others were hunting squirrell when he dropped the gun and it discharged. Goodall underwent minor surgery today at the local hospital and is in good condition. He had a license but the other two didn't and will be charged.

The Homecoming King and Queen were both announced yesterday. Brandy Dean, daughter of David Dean was crowned Queen last night at the MCHS gym and her Royal Escort is Casey Taylor, son of David Taylor and Lou Ann Clark. They will reign this Friday night during the game and Saturday during the dance at the Delmar Gym. The Coronation took part last night during a break in the sale of football jerseys, an annual fund raising auction held by the Athletic Booster Club.

A busy weekend ahead. Friday night, the Homecoming Game and the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce is having a Moonlight Madness Sale also. Saturday, the Annual OCTOBERFEST OF BANDS event...with morning parade and afternoon field competiton and Sunday, the Historical Society's Annual Pioneer Day at the fairgrounds, featuring a Horse Drawn parade.... and competition.

A HOT DAY IN MAQUOKETA..86.

Maquoketa, was surprised and upset by Western Dubuque last night....loosing 19 to 12...never leading as WD won their Homecoming Game. Maquoketa is now 1 and 1 in the District and so is Western Dubuque which last week was defeated badly by DeWitt. DeWitt won again last night in overtime over Vinton-Shellsburg, at Vinton. So,
Maquoketa, ranked 8th this week, will drop out of the Top 10.
Maquoketa fresh-soph team also lost last night...they have won just one game so far this season.

The 4th Annual Alzeimer's Memory Walk was held this morning. KMAQ was one of the sponsors and had a walking team. Our team turned-in just over $400 and the total for the event went over $7,400...way over the goal lof $5,000. Over 60 "walkers" took part. A group of Bellevue residents turned-in over $2,400 in contributions. Needless to say, we are happy for a very succesful walk.

Have a good Sunday!

Nice again.

Maquoketa play Western Dubuque there tonight in football. It is there homecoming. Maquoketa is 3 and 0.

Iowa has this weekend off.

The street in front of Carson Funeral Home...is Maquoketa's historic street in what they call our historic district...because of all the old beautiful old homes on it, including Squires Manor Bed and Breakfast. In early October, the street lights and poles will be replaced with 18 antique lights and short poles. They are being paid for by private donations. Should look neat. I'll keep you posted.

Preston has a new City Hall, new Library, new Golf Course and it looks like a new swimming pool...Aquatic Center...could be ready for use next summer. Anticipated cost, $600,000.

The Savanna Ordinace Army Depot was opened in 1917. Next year it will close. Tomorrow, an Open House, for a last look, will be held from noon 'til 6.

A couple from Mississippi flew into Maquoketa Airport...and used the city's car (I did not know they had a car for use out there)...to visit the Maquoketa Caves State Park. While there, the rear window was broken, and taken...flight plans, $l50 in cash and credit cards...total value missing, $400. Cynthia and Ted Williams of Mississippi are not happy about their Maquoketa visit, I'm sure.

Jane C. Glahn Ludwick, age 82, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and formerly of Maquoketa, died Tuesday at North Carolina and services are pending at the Carson & Son Funeral Home in Maquoketa.

Have a GOOD weekend.

Tomorrow, School Board Election day in Iowa. Here in Maquoketa, we have no contest. Running un-opposed is Bill Schwenker. Polls will be open from noon until 8 P.M. The following School Districts have a race ... Andrew, Bellevue, Preston, Midland and North Cedar.
Plus, Midland has on the ballot, a 3.9-million-dollar Bond Issue, to build an addition to the Elementary School in Oxford Junction.
Many are in favor of that issue, but many are also opposed. So...even though Maquoketa has no contest, we should have quite a few listeners for our Election Coverage on KMAQ tomorrow night starting at 8.

The Maquoketa School Board meets tonight, so I should have some news from it on tomorrow's report.

On the Police Blotter...Mark Hillebrand, teacher and head football coach here in town, reported to the police that early Sunday morning, someone had thrown a bowling ball through the rear window of his 1995 Ford Van. Damages are estimated at $800.

A 15-year old Maquoketa youth, Jennifer Lee Wells, said she wanted to see if she could drive alone. She borrowed a family friend's car, and ended up in an accident, 6 miles South of Maquoketa. She told

SUNNY AND COOL TODAY..AROUND 60

This story has them talkin'....

Two Maquokta football coaches face alcohol charges for having open cans of beer in their vehicle as they returned from Monticello last week. Charged with Open Container violation, Head Varsity Coach Mark Hillebrand and Assistant Coach Frosty Ward. Iowa State Patrol Troopers say they stopped Hillebrand's personal van for speeding on highway 64 just outside of Anamosa. The Trooper, Fred Herman, said the pair told him they were coming back after exchanging training films for football. There were two cold unopened cans of beer in the back seat and one partially consumed can near Hillebrand who told Herman that he was using it to spit his tobacco in. The other can was open and spilled on the floor in front of the passenger Ward.
Hillebrand, who was driving, tested .03 for alcohol consumption with .10 as the legal limit, so he was not charged with drunk driving. The two coaches are scheduled to appear in Jones County Magistrate Court next week.

Nice, cooler day.

Last night at the Maquoketa City Council meeting, the council hired
an architect and design firm to start some planning for a new city swimming pool and recreation facility. The cost to hire the firm is $12,500. The firm will talk with the local pool comittee and other residents to determine what kind of design to present to the city.
The same firm desinged the new Aquatic Center in DeWitt, which opened this summer and was a big hit and success. No definite site for a new facility has been choosen.

The new four-lane 61 through Maquoketa is almost finished....new stop and go lights still need to be installed at the end of the northbound off-ramp. The lights are already in place for the southbound off-ramp. Also still to be done....paint striping....signing and some lawn seeding.

City councilman were told last night that the new bridge over the Maquoketa River on old highway 61, North, will open in mid-October, a month later than anticipated. The bridge is done, but the new part of North Main Street leading to the new bridge , still needs a lot of work.

G.L. Stockham and Son (Grandson David, in charge) Contractors are putting in the "footings" this week for the new Durtrac Credit Union Building on highway 64 West, across from Wal Mart. The "modular" building will then be brought in, and set in place, and the new "bank" is scheduled to open sometime in late fall.

Iowa State is a 3-point favorite to defeat Iowa this Saturday night in Ames. Maquoketan Sage Rosenfels will start again at Quarterback for the Cyclones. Game will be on the Fox TV Network. Since you can't hear KMAQ where you are (most of you can't)....it is okay to watch the game on TV.

Maquoketa plays at Monticello Friday night.

The cleaning company is still at Jack & Jill today.

Talked to retired former high school Principal Dick Wold at Rotary today and he says he is enjoying retirement. Looks good. Busy....and getting ready also for daughter Teresa's wedding this fall.

Another terrific weather day in Maquoketa.

The fire was not as bad as I thought, or was told, at the Jack & Jill Store.
They had a cleaning company there all night and opened for business at 11 this morning. My son, Dave, walked through it this afternoon and said that except for the smell of the fire, you would not have known there was one.
It is beleived the fire started near a celophane shrink wrap iron used in the produce department. Fortunately, only the sprinklers in that section of the store were set off.

Just got back from Springbrook where that little town's annual Labor Day celebration was held this afternoon and evening....featuring the fire department's annual chicken bar-be-que.
Great meal..half a chicken and all the trimmings, including dessert. Stood in line nearly a half hour after hunting for a parking space. They had kids games and bingo and a raffle. I'm still stuffed.

Big day tomorrow...I get a badly needed haircut at Sal's Styling Salon...been so busy...now am a week or two over-due.

Hope your Labor Day was a good day and that the week ahead will be great.

Being buildt just East of Maquoketa..a lookout tower...right next to Bill Sager's new home...Amish are building it for Bill. When it is finished, I'll ask Bill if I can climb it and report back to you on how much of Jackson County I could see from the top. By the way..a little farther East was Maquoketa's Zoo. It did not open this year. Buildings and cages and pens are still there.

Laborly yours...

A nicer day today than expected...hot and breezy.

A fire during the noon hour today at the Jack & Jill Store in Maquoketa has closed the store for an undetermined length of time. The fire either started in the Produce Section or in a storage area. Flames were visable in the back area, but most of the damage was from smoke. The Andrew Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Firemen from both Maquoketa and Andrew were at the scene for about 2 hours.
The store is owned by people in Tipton who also have a grocery store in that city and I believe one or two other locations. I assume they will have to completely restock the store. For color pictures at the fire, bring up www.maquoketa.com

More on the fire on tomorrow's Daily Report. I just heard that it may be a week or two before they reopen. The store is located on West Platt Street and was originally owned by brothers Francis and Paul Skeffington. Paul died quite a few years ago and Francis is retired. Paul's daughter and son-in-law Bob Lee own the Skeffington's Jack & Jill Store in DeWitt.

Nancy and I were at the Delmar Community Celebration today. The old Delmar Railroad Depot has been restored and was open. Volunteers have done a fantastic job making it into a museum.
A gentleman from Illinois was there showing slides of railroad depots in the area years ago...an interesting half-hour presentation. Dale and Gennie Brooks were married 55 years ago and her dad,Dr. O. L. Frank of Maquoketa had a l6mm movie camera and had Ves Francois take movies of the event, including when they were to board the train at Delmar to go on their honeymoon. The 5 minute movie has been transferred to Vhs Tape and given to the museum. It is in color and shows the train coming into the town to pick up the newlyweds and others....an excellent video for the museum, and narrated by Dale himself.
They were both at the event today. They recently buildt a new home in Maquoketa. Also enjoyed a pork dinner prepared by the Delmar Lions Club, and attended the dedication of the Veterans New MEMORIAL in the new Delmar park.
The park is right across the street from the Depot, and is the old railroad right-of-way. It is a beautiful park which includes a pavilion and gazebo.
Delmar is pretty proud of their new park and restored depot and they should be. Next time you come home this way, be sure to pay Delmar a visit, just 8 minutes from Maquoketa. A cycle amd vintage car show and volleyball and softball tournament were also part of today's festivities. A good time for a couple hours, visiting our neighbor town of Delmar. Their next big event will be their Christmas Festival.

Don't forget to go to www.maquoketa.com

HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

The Maquoketa Cardinals football team opened the season at home last night and won their game over Waterloo Columbus, 14 to 12. The
sophomores lost. Next week, at Monticello.

I went to the Iowa-Nebraska game this morning....big crowed..over 70,000 and warm. Had a good dinner in a tent near the stadium.... then enjoyed the first half of game. Hot again today...88. Same for tomorrow.

Sage Rosenfels, Junior at Iowa State, led the Cyclones football team to a win last night over Indiana State. He is son of Bob and Jamie Rosenfels of rural Maquoketa and a l996 MCHS Grad. He ran for a 52-yard TD and passed for another...was the starting QB and made the Sports Headlines this morning. This summer, he married daughter of Florian and Karen Steffen of Maquoketa. Next Saturday, his next game will again be in Ames ..against Iowa. Iowa opens the season at home tomorrow against Nebraska, a sell-out. A well-known Maquokta golfer sold his tickets to tomorrow's game to a man from Omaha for $l19 each.
They have a face value of $33. KMAQ will broadcast the game and the Hawkeye Network is hosting affiliates tomorrow, so I'll be there with son, son-in-law and grandson. Network will have a tail-gate tent in the parking lot and the game starts already at ll. GO HAWKS.

MY GREEN BAY PACKERS WON AGAIN LAST NIGHT! My big concern these days is that Sosa will hit 71 home runs and take record away from McGuire.
As a Cardinal fan, you can understand my concern....of course, no sympathy if you are a Cub fan.

Maquoketa opens up football season tonight at Goodenow field..hosting Waterloo Columbus. The game will be broadcast on KMAQ-AM by Leighton Hepker and Coach Bill Flemming. Bob Warner will broadcast on FM.. our area-game-of-the-week from Preston where the Trojans will host Northeast of Goose Lake.

APAC, the telemarketing company, announced today that they would add one-hundred more employees at their Maquoketa office, about double what they have now. The 7,500 square foot office is in the heart of downtown Maquoketa, where the Schultz Variety Store was located...and in the old days, was the location of the Pastime Theatre. I wonder where they will find that many applicants for a telemarketing job.

When the railraod that Louie was with for many years closed their shop in Clinton...if he wanted to stay with the company, he had to re-locate to Missouri.
So, they sold home and moved....Elaine leaving the Maquoketa State Bank position. She has been working at a bank down there. Anyway, next May, Louie retires and they plan to move back to Maquoketa. He'll
be 62. Loves to golf. Both look good. Elaine's mother, Helen Shady, is 87, and still does lots of volunteer work here in town.
Also at dinner, Carol and Merlin Yeager. Merlin farms and Carol
was transferred to gas company office in Dubuque, so is driving alone daily, but retires from that job at end of year. Merlin still flying...has his own l973 plane. They are building a home on the Mississippi at Bellevue...doing it themselves. Both in 50's but look around 40, especially Carol. Bob Hartley's were there too.....they live in Delmar now..he works at Prairie House in Maquoketa (a home for those retarded) and she is teller at Maquoketa State Bank. Both look good and Pat likes the Internet, so may be reading this in Delmar.....and I can't end this without saying that Ron and Doris Evans were at dinner too. Ron, retired Maquoketa Police Chief, works parttime at the fairgrounds, doing maintenance work and Doris has a great job doing "dot" greeting cards, etc....travels a lot for the company. Ron looks good...but Doris, around 60 I guess, but looks much, much older. So, now you are up-to-date on people you possibly know. Boring paragraph if you don't know these people.

They have started tearing down Jim Beller's old barber shop building on East Platt. And..took the front door off the building across from KMAQ, so guess you could say that demolition has also begun there.
The former Hays Cafe restaurant on East Platt opened Tuesday as DAWN'S DINER.

Why do we have to scroll down so much before reading this report?
Good question! I don't have the answer, but let me know if you do.

Time to quit for another day.
