Another nice day, in the 70's.

Two year old Justin Clark, son of Jason and Kelly Clark of ll5 S. Matteson Street, died in the house fire yesterday morning.
Kelly Clark and her 4-year-old child and a l6-month old child, both escaped the fire and are listed in stable condition at University of Iowa Hositals in Iowa City. The cause of fire, accidental....and due to a child playing with a lighter. The fire started in an upstairs bedroom. The mother, Kelly said she was unable to go back for Justin because of the smoke. Funeral services are pending at Carson & Son Funeral Home, for Justin Clark, age 2. Fire Chief Mark Beck said he has been on the Maquoketa Fire Department for 17 years and this is the first Maquoketa fire death in that period of time.

Lumir Wosoba, age 81, of rural Maquoketa died yesterday. He is survived by his wife, Nadine, daughter Shirley DeVore of Baldiwn and son Gary of Monmouth.

and that's the way it is...

   Day: MONDAY

Daily Report

Date: 8/30/99, 5:58 PM

Nice weather Sunday, high 82, and nice weather today, 79.

Good turnout for the harness horse races yesterday. Brad Ashby of
Maquoketa won 2 of the 10 races. Mary Ronek of Maquoketa was in 3 races, but did not win. Bob Larkey of Maquoketa was going to have one horse running, but sold it last week. I watched the races with Jim Round, Junior, and Mick Head.

The Iowa State Fire Marshall's office is investigating a house fire that occured at 9:40 this morning at 115 S. Matteson in Maquoketa, that took the life of a 2 year-old child. Fire Chief Mark Beck said smoke was visable from an upstairs window when firemen arrived.
The mother quickly told firemen that the child was still upstairs, but apparently 2 other kids got out safely. The name of the family has not yet been released. The child apparently died from smoke inhalation, as the actual fire was put out in just a few minutes. I'll have complete details tomorrow.

Firemen were called to a second fire at 2:30 this afternoon...a truck fire East of Maquoketa. When firemen arrived at the scene, the pickup was completely involved in flames and it took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze. The truck was owned by Curt Felderman of Maquoketaa and was caused by an electrical problem.

Remember the 2 people killed in the pickup accident after the rodeo earlier this month? The driver, Corey Driscoll, age 24, of Preston, has been charged with two counts of homicide. His blood alcohol level registered over the legal limit.

Check back tomorrow.

Councilman Neal Morehead is thinking about running for Mayor.
Councilmen Alvin Barten, Jim Bollman, and Steve Flynn have not decided yet if they will seek re-election in November. Mayor Jack Rosenberg will run again.

KMAQ'S longtime student announcer (no longer a student though) Kenny Goodenow is going to the Bare Naked Ladies Concert in Tinley Park near Chicago tonight...with his special friend, Kim Tebbe (who bought the tickets) (he's been cheap ever since I hired him years ago)...tickets just 27.50 each.....NO, the singers (men) are not naked on stage)....
Kenny is not that excited, as since working for KMAQ he has become a Doris Day Fan and for dancing, loves the Polka.

HAVE A NICE WEEKEND.

Nice day again..but warm..high in 80's.

The Jackson County Hospital Board finally has a new member to replace Mark Ward who resigned 8 months ago. He is Bob Specht of Monmouth, who was born and raised in this area, but left to pursue an insurance business for nearly 40 years. He retired to the area about 2 years ago. New Hospital Administrator Kurt Coleman says Specht has a genuine interest in the hospital. At their meeting, the Board recognized Gwen Theede who has retired after 42 years as a JCPH Nurse...who officials figure, was involved in 1,192 baby deliveries. And..the Board was told that Chris Johnson from the OB and Acute-Care Department has resigned after 14 years but will now be on on-call employee.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Lamb of Maquoketa are parents of a girl born this morning at the JCPH.

Troy and Reaann Theide, owners of the Decker Hotel, purchased the
large older home on Summitt Street that for many years was the
Administration Building for the Maquoketa Community School District.
They will move in September and their 3rd floor apartment at the Decker will be used for their new Restaurant Manager. Two active young boys, Ty and Cam, will enjoy having a yard to play in....the main reason for the purchase, says Troy.

Daytime only station KMAQ-1320, signed-on-the-air 41 years ago today.
Owner was Nate Goetz, theatre man from Monroe, Wisconsin and two silent partners. He is retired and lives in Naples, Florida. Manager that day was Bob Brown, now retired and living in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Jane Bean was Bookkeeper and she and husband, Baptist minister, retired in Southern Iowa. News Director Stan Barten I believe is retired and lives in Indiana. He owned a station in Elwood, Indiana for quite a few years. Receptionist Gitte Bollinger died of cancer a long time ago. Chief Engineer, Ray Shields retired, then died a few years ago, in Harrison,Arkansas.
Duane Willey, Sales Manager and later Manager, was in a serious auto accident in the late 50's and never worked again, and still lives with his wife Bev in Maquoketa. And me, I was the announcer (for 6 hours a day) and took charge of the record library. I was named manager in l96l, then went in the Army for 2 years 93-95 and bought the station in the fall of '65 from Goetz and partners. In 1967,the FM station was added.

ITS BEEN A LONG 41 YEARS.

Nice day.

The Jackson County Economic Development Commission held their first ever golf tournament, a Best-Shot, this afternoon at the new Preston Golf Course. Jake Bickford talked me into playing. First time out with the clubs in years and it showed. But, was good to play the new course (really a nice course) and the food after was good.

Some idiot drove his pickup over a stretch of a newly paved Jackson County road last week....I saw some color pictures of the damage today..a real mess...and the repair cost, $21,000.

Boy born yesterday to Julie and Mitch Paintin of Maquoketa. Grandparents are Richard and Kathleen Harder of Delmar and great-grandparents are Arnold and Celilia Harder of Maquoketa.

Her husband is a forestry consultant.

The 6 new rooms at Decker Hotel are done and are being used...all on 3rd floor. Second floor has 12 rooms. A Monday night "open house"
of the Decker is planned for September.

The Bowling Season has started in Maquoketa...at TIMBER LANES on East Platt Street, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Louie Clasen. They do a nice job and have a popular place.

Osterhaus Pharmacy has another new pharmacist...brings the total number of Pharmacists there to 6 and that doesn't include Bob, who no longer fills prescriptions. Dale Yoder still has his own pharmacy on West Platt... and Wal Mart has two pharmacists....that's a total of 9 in Maquoketa. Not bad for a small town.

KMAQ NEWS checked with all the Principals and all went well for the first day of school. The rain yesterday caused the roof to leak a lot at Cardinal.

The fire deparment has had a couple calls this week...food left on stove at a mobile home and car fire....just smoke damage to the home owned by Ken Moore and rented by Clark Kennedy and the car owned by Pauline Caldwell of Clinton was a total loss. Chamber of Commerce MONTHLY meeting is at noon Tuesday at the Decker Hotel. State Representative Bob Osterhaus will be guest speaker.

The old building on East Platt (l block East of Main) that was last used as a barbershop by Jim Beller, will be torn down by an Amish demolition team. It was a corner grocery store for many years, BILLUP'S if my memory is right. The Amish still have not started removing the building just South of the Decker Hotel, to be a Brad Deery Motors car-display lot. When I came to town in l958, that building was home to Rotman Motors and Tom Ross Men's Wear. By the way, Jim Beller is still a barber, working out of his home.

Looks like the Maquoketa City Council will get the Clinton Engines plant on the South side of Maple and maybe the North side later.
But, only if a study indicates a major clean-up of the land is not necessary. Martin Hoffinger, the current owner, gets a tax write-off for the gift and the city can re-sell all or part of the property to new industrial prospects. This was all decided at the City Council last night.

Bill Eberhart,71, of Delmar died Sunday at a Davenport hosital.
He worked for Clinton Engines years ago. Surivors include his wife, a daughter, LuAnn Johnson of Maquoketa... and..a son David of Maquoketa.

A beautiful Sunday.

Today, the ODD FELLOWS LODGE started its journey to the "Auction Block". The lodge, with about 6 members left, has decided to call it "quits". Their old downtown building was sold to Clay Romer. It is right next to his ROMER BAKERY. The REBECKAHS (the organizations ladies auxiliary) plans to continue meeting in member homes, with a few more members remaining than the men numbered. Today, a crane was brought in to lower chairs, tables, etc. to the sidewalk and then on a truck to be taken to the fairgrounds where everything will be sold at public auction this coming Saturday. I went up this morning and visited the 2nd and 3rd story clubrooms. Like walking into the 19th Century. The 2nd story had a very large high-ceiling club meeting room with high back king-like chairs for the officers and about 50 arm-wrest chairs for members, that are all in excellent condition and should bring a lot of money at the auction. Both floors had a kitchen. I noted a very good upright piano...and old victrola...a large safe...club uniforms...and much, much more. Gale Stickley, one of remaining members, said all money from the sale of building and furnishings will be put into a local fund to allow for annual awards. This needs to be worked out yet. Clay Romer has no plans for the building. He will continue to rent main floor to Maquoketa Community Services for their used clothing store. For many years, the street level floor was the home of Maquoketa Newspapers. Sad...very sad..to see something that was for over 100 years a part of Maquoketa...and now coming to an end. Funny, how years ago, STEPS TO CLIMB, we not a problem. It was a long two stairways to the smaller meeting room and kitchen on the 3rd floor. Oh, if those waynes-coating walls could talk.

Nancy Tabor of Baldwin is Iowa's newest Judge. She was chosen late in week by the Governor for the $94,000 a year job. Her husband is Jackson County COUNTY ATTORNEY Phil Tabor. This is an "added" judgeship for our area, to handle increasing case load. We have two other judges with Maquoketa connections. David Schoenthaler of Davenport and formerly of Maquoketa and Bobbi Alpers of rural Maquoketa. A retired judge from Maquoketa, now living in Florida,

Beautiful day in Maquoketa, a high around 80.

Sorry, to have missed a couple days, but I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY BUSY.

The Jackson County Fair and our daily broadcasts from it ended Sunday and yesterday, we started broadcasting from the Clinton County Fair at DeWitt, which continues thru tomorrow.

The Jackson County Fair ended on a good attendance note. Saturday and Sunday, were both good days with around 3,700 in attendance each day. The Saturday figure was still below a year ago (which was a record Saturday) and Sunday's total was way up over a year ago. So, overall
the attendance was down from 1998, but still not bad at all. The bull-riding show Sunday night was very popular and helped the Sunday total a lot. Steve Peters and his wife have two Foster Kids and they gave each a steer and the girl's steer became Grand Champion of the fair....a happy day for the 10-year-old.

The Maquoketa City Council met last night and decided to tour the Clinton Engines plant before they make a decision on whether to proceed with accepting a donation of the land (and buildings) to the city.

The city also is looking into explanding the pedestrian trail..to include along the Maquoketa River. A REAP grant may be applied for.

Dr. C. K. Risser is celebrating his 100th birthday today at the Extended Care area of the hospital. His health isn't the best, but he has a good mind. Sheri Melvold, News Director of KMAQ, did an
interview with him last week in his room and will use portions of that on her JUST TALK show tomorrow.

Two deaths: Wanita Streets, age 88 of Maquoketa. No immediate survivors. And, Mabel Metheny, age 89, of Maquoketa. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Bodenhofer and a son, Jack Willison, both of Maquoketa.

Nothing new on the new industry...announcment may not be until next week, instead of this week.

Royce Earles is running for Mayor. Maybe I mentioned that in last report.

So much for today....I'm off to the fair in DeWitt.
