Well, here, like everywhere, the weather is topic #1....97 today..the 3rd time this month to reach 97.....the Maquoketa Municipal Electric Utility hit record "peaks" of energy over the last few days. Having the fair in progress is one of the reasons. The record high for this day, in Maquoketa, was 100 in 19l6.
The Jackson County Fair started with an 80-minute parade Wednesday night and attendance after was about 200 better than last year. But, yesterday, KID'S DAY, lots of kids, but the day was less than half the attendance of a year ago...around l,700. The Country Show, with Darrell Singletary, was very good, I've been told, but the grandstand was no where full because of the heat. Today, warmest day yet..the afternoon was slow and most of the events were moved into the air-conditioned Pearson Building. Big tractor pull tonight...but again today, the attendance is going to fall way short of a year ago.
The good news is that the weather will turn much cooler tomorrow and stay that way for a few days.
The new 600 employee factory for Maquoketa is still a "hot" issue and still looks very good, with an announcement possible next week. The local Council committee met last night again....and everyone remains excited.
Mr. and Mrs. Joel Sanger of DeWitt had a girl yesterday. Grandparents are Rex and Dorothy Sanger of Maquoketa.
Wanita Streets, age 88, of Maquoketa died this morning at the Maquoketa Care Center and Dennis Simons, age 49, of Clinton and formerly of Maquoketa, died this morning at his home. Arrangements for both are pending at the Carson & Son Funeral Home in Maquoketa.
Have a good weekend.

Nearly an inch of rain around 2 this morning and high winds....lost a big sign panel at KFC...and electricity off this morning....we didn't sign-on until 6:30. And, again today, hot and humid.
East Central (Miles-Sabula) boys lost their first ever State Tournament game today in the last of the final, 7th inning...we aired it on KMAQ-AM with play-by-play done for us by an announcer from famous KMA in Shennendoah.
The Jackson County fair starts tonight, with the Parade at 6:30.
A birth: Wendy Hullinger and Jason White of Maquoketa are parents of a boy born Sunday at the JCPH.
Reynold E.Ketelsen of Maquoketa, age 72, died this morning at his home.
Honey Alexander, wife of Presidential Candidate, Lamar, will be at the Republican Booth at the fair tomorrow afternoon.
Bill Flemming is having his Basketball Camp this week....around 60 boys working out in the hot gym...and paying about $l50 for the pleasure.
Bob Brown, one of Wisconsin's best radio broadcasters in the 50's and 60's, now retired, (first manager of KMAQ), tells me he is having trouble bringing up this report occassionlly on his computer. Anyone else having trouble??
Remember Jack Eigen broadcasting form the CHEZ PAREE in Chicago? Bob Brown was a producer of that show for a time, working for WMAQ Radio in the Merchandise Mart Building in the Windy City, owned at that time by the Kennedy family. Same station that John Doremus worked at. One of the best radio voices in those days.
Now that you've had a little history of old time radio...better close.
Next up, I will broadcast the parade at 6:30.

Early this morning, nearly an inch of rain fell..then a sunny day and now starting to cloud up at 4:30.
Phyllis Current just popped in....hadn't seen her in years....worked at the MSB bank next door, but not since 1989....now husband and her live in Clinton.
Jack Kemp and his wife Barb of Spragueville were in an ATV accident over the weekend...ended up in a creek bed and Preston Fire and Rescue removed Mr. Kemp from creek and he was airlifted to Rock Island Hospital. No condition report available at noon.

Elizabeth Dole was in Maquoketa today for public meeting at the Super 8 Motel meeting room and it was packed.
Steve Forbes is coming to Delmar Sunday and it will be a Whole Hog Fest. He will be spending lots of money on KMAQ inviting people to attend.
There is will be a big STRAW POLE taken in Ames, August 14th and every candidate wants to show up good in it.

Hot and Humid...again...and there is no relief coming....one of the longest hot spells we have had in years.
Despite heat...people are OUT! Jones County Fair crowds were good. It ends today. Had nearly 300 cars at drive-in last night and it was the warmest night out there this season, with little or no breeze.
Jackson County Fair starts Wednesday and hopefully, it will be held in a little cooler weather, maybe in the 80's.
A new JACKSON COUNTY golf tournament has been announced, to be sponsored by the Jackson County Economic Development Commission, the same organization that owns the Sabula Old School House Welcome Center. The tournament will be held at the new Preston golf course on Wednesday, August 25th.
The MCHS Class of 84 held their l5th reunion last night at Mickel's Catering Hall.
Saw Don Henningson the other night at a County dinner and he told me his son-in-law and MCHS grad Paul Peterman is a new visitor to this site. Welcome Paul. Tell us something about you and your family on the KMAQ GUEST BOOK. Don, retired farmer and banker, is on the Pearson Memorial Board with me. That group, (I have been Chairman for over 20 years) helps oversee the large Pearson building at the fairgrounds.
Maquoketa girls High School Softball team did pretty well on the tournament trail, but last night lost 2 to 0 to Mediapolis and won't go to "state" for a 2nd year in a row. The East Central boys's team (Miles) goes to "state" this week. Their first game out at Carroll, Iowa will at noon this Wednesday. KMAQ-AM will broadcast the game.
Had "brunch" today (I ate the breakfast items only) at THE DEPOT here in Maquoketa (old railroad depot on East Platt) and it was really good. The building was "gutted" and redone completely and is beautiful inside. Sunday is the only day open over noon hour. It is more a supper club than anything, open 7 days a week from 5 til 9 PM, a little longer on Friday and Saturday. Has a private room for parties. Maquoketa is lucky to have this place....something for those who do not belong to the Country Club.
Have a good week.

TOO HOT!
Guess that is why I didn't have a report yesterday.
Sounds like we might get back to the 80's for highs, starting next Tuesday. Most people around here have had enough of the 90's. We are broadcasting this week from the Great Jones County Fair at Monticello. The heat hasn't hurt attendance so far....tonight, the Martina McBride Show and the Little River Band tomorrow night. They no longer give away new cars, but now give away a nice vacation trip each night.....to everywhere from Las Vegas to Amsterdam.
A new ceramic shop has opened in downtown Maquoketa on East Platt Street.....and opening soon, a new US Cellular Store, on the corner of Main and Platt. In the past, that building was Mr. T's Music and not long ago a Video Rental store, then a GTE phone store. I understand, the new store will not only sell cellular phones, but also repair phone for the entire sales area. Also opening soon, a new health food store. More on these new business places later.
Looking sharp in downtown Maquoketa, two of Brad Deery Motors lots that have been paved with blacktopping. Prior to the work being done by Seven Hills Paving...... G. L.Stockham & Son put new sidewalks and curbs in. One of the lots is on the corner where Radio Shack was located prior to Brad Deery tearing down the building and the other display lot is also on the corner just North of the main show-room, where a small house was torn down last year. Brad Deery is getting ready to tear down the building just South of the Decker Hotel. In fact, it connects to the Hotel, so when that is down, the Hotel will stand all alone and should like good. If you have not been to Maquoketa for several years.....when you come...you will be amazed at what has been done in the area around where Rasmussen Motors and the Jack and Jill Store had been for many years.
KEEP COOL and have a nice weekend.

Hot again...so what else is new? Nearly an inch of rain around 3 this morning. But, up in Charles City area, they had around 8 inches.
It is supposed to be around 95 tomorrow and I'll be broadcasting from the Jones County Fair from 1 til 2 tomorrow afternoon. Billy Rae Cyrus will be at the fair tomorrow night.
The Voy 3 Theatre is getting a new sidewalk this week. In this heat, they started breaking up the old sidewalk. There will no longer be a sidewalk carpet....at least for now. The movie business has been good this summer.....turn aways last Saturday night at the drive-in.
Ridiculous Day was held in Maquoketa today, with pretty good crowds...most shopped around 7 this morning while it was still fairly cool. They no longer have a kids parade...and the event is not nearly as big as in years past. Back in the 60's, it was a huge day, but then we had many big stores downtown, like Penney's, Gambles, Ben Franklin, Spaldings, Leinbaughs, Grahams, Western Auto, Coast-to-Coast, and of course, THE GREEN MILL. The arrival of WAL MART has changed a lot of things, including Ridiculous Day.
Nothing new on the big factory that may be coming to town.
No new babies. No deaths.
Quiet day.
Thanks for the visit.

At the Maquoketa School Board meeting last night, the Board discussed having another election to try for the additional 1% sale tax for County School Districts' infrastructure needs.....the issue that lost in the late June election. Sounds like they will try for a county-wide election sometime early in the new year.
The Maquoketa City Council last night voted to put on the November ballot, the issue of a Hotel-Motel tax in Maquoketa.. with proceeds of around $20,000 a year going for recreation needs in the city.
Services are pending a the Carson & Son Funeral home in Maquoketa for John C. Shurbon, age 72, who died yesterday at his home in Maquoketa.

We had 7/10 of an inch of welcome rain this morning...then skies cleared and we had a hot and humid afternoon...high 89.
Sorry that there was no report here yesterday, but my entire family, in 3 cars, went up to Wisconsin for my dad's 90th. He and we had a great day.
Local Sewer Officials are looking for the culprit who sometime yesterday dumped a major amount of "yuk" into the Maquoketa sewer system....so much, that it nearly shut down the treatment plant today. It apparently was dumped into a RV dump station or into a man hole that was opened. Citizens are being asked to report anything suspicious they might have seen yesterday in this regard.
The Maquoketa City Council and the School Board both meet tonight, so I should have news from both of those meetings on tomorrow's daily.
Couple births. Scott and Mary Hartley of Shokopee, Minnesota had a boy yesterday. Grandparents are Bob and Pat Hartley of Delmar and formerly of Maquoketa. And, a boy born July 7th to Toby and Lisa Kaheiki of Lakewood, Washington. Grandparents are Don and Pam Sanger, formerly of Maquoketa.

Also, having a family reunion in Maquoketa this week, the McNerney's. The late Ralph McNerney was manager of the popular Green Bay Lumber Company many years ago. About 43 signed-up for the event, according to a nice lady I talked to, named Mavis.
Jackson County's unemployment rate in June was 2.9 percent, compared to 2.7 in May and 3.9 a year ago. Iowa's rate in June was 2.6.
Maquoketa will be featured on a half-hour Iowa Public Televison show, called 'IOWA THIS WEEKEND' on Thursday, July 22nd at 6:30 P.M. and the show will be repeated Friday, July 23rd, at l P.M. and 9:30 P.M. HOT HOT..HUMID HUMID...BUT I LOVE IT .. SURE BEATS 10 BELOW LAST FEBRUARY.
Some time back, I reported that Maquoketa would be getting a new bank, out where THE ROSE GARDEN was (Hi Lo Lanes before that)...but the sign has said for months, coming soon. So, KMAQ NEWS checked...and here was our noon news story today....
The new DuTrack Community Credit Union will be open by mid-October on a site across from Wal-Mart on highway 64 West Maquoketa. John Smith, the company's marketing and communications manager, said site preparation is beginning on the former Rose Garden property. Smith said they will bring in a steel-beam modular facility for the new branch office, once the area has been prepared. Once open, they will have four employees. Maquoketa is the sixth branch location for DuTrack. The main office is on Asbury Road in Dubuque. The facility will offer traditional financial services such as savings, checking, credit cards, mortgage and other loans.
Peg Manderscheid got a hole in one this Tuesday at the Maquoketa golf course..on the 9th hole. Her husband, Tom, got one about 12 years ago. They live here in Maquoketa. We did have two Tom Manderscheids in town, but the gas company Tom moved years ago. When I played golf years ago, I would be happy if I got the ball in the hole with not one stroke, but 7 or 8. I was never a good golfer, ...to be more accurate, I was a lousy golfer. But, reason was.....I didn't play enough and regularly. Still have my clubs. Summer out of high school, when I played a lot....I had my best score ever...a 39. A legitimate (counted every single stroke) 39...but the only one ever. My worst score? Like the national debt!
Have a good weekend.

Is the construction of the new bridge over the Maquoketa River at the north edge of Maquoketa....on schedule? That was the question asked by the Supervisors at their meeting this week and Engineer Clark Scholz said "yes" and that it should be completed by the end of September.
The Maquoketa City Council held another meeting last night to talk about the Clinton Engines offer to give the city their South buildings and land, if the city would do any necessary clean-up work. The city is interested, for two reasons.....1/ they would like to see the Clinton Engines area cleaned up, as it is an eye-sore now and 2/ they could use another good industrial site for prospective new industry. But, they want to make sure the cleanup will not be more costly than the value of land. So, they have hired at $8,000...an Engineering Firm to do a study to determine the cost of clean-up of the ground where contamination has occurred. Clinton Engines would like to remain in operation, possible in their buildings to the North. The owner of the Company, now lives in Florida, and is interested in a tax write-off if he were to donate anything to the city. The plant still employs about 20 or so and is managed by John Melroy and Bill Mayberry, both longtime employees. The do contract work now for other companies. In the 60's, it was the largest manufacturer of small lawnmower-type engines in the world and emplyed over 2,000. Then it went bankrupt in 1996, and never came back to anywhere near the factory it was in the big days of the 50's and 60's.

Hot, humid today...97 the high.
Nancy and I got back at around midnight last night. Well...should not admit this, but....
we got to Dubuque shortly before midnight...and I talked Nancy into letting me check out the Dubuque Casino Riverboat...the Diamond Joe...just off the highway....not out of our way you understand..... (she said she would just stay in the car and watch the people..she does not like to gamble)...and so on the boat I went...to the Video Poker section. Wasn't there but 5 minutes and a young lady right next to me, won $4,000, getting a Royal Flush. Was she excited. Her boyfried was somewhere else on the boat and didn't get to see her payoff, IN CASH. SO, I figured I was next. Nope, I figured wrong. I lost some money and we were back on the road to Maquoketa. But, the quick stop was fun...and that will do me for a few weeks again.
Wedding in Horicon, Wisconin was nice...reception in a big white tent and weather was nice....hot...but breezy. Very hot in the church. Food good. Had a couple beers. Met a few old friends and spent good time with my folks. Will be going up there again in 2 weeks for my dad's 90th birthday on July 17. Sure you can send him a card..to Ben Voy, 819 E. Maple Street, Horicon, Wisconsin 53032. Mom is 87 and they keep up their own home as always.
I hear that crowds were a bit sparce yesterday for Maquoketa's FESTIVAL OF FLAGS event. Parade was short. Stock car races, because of wet grounds from earlier rains, were cancelled, but the fireworks display went on at the fairgrounds and there was a very good crowd and I'm told the show was very good. Today, they had a tour of homes and I heard that around 200 took it...which was good considering the heat.
We (Leighton Hepker) broadcast the Bellevue July 4th Parade at 10:30 this morning "live" from downtown Bellevue and I broadcast the DeWitt 4th of July Parade at 1:30 this afternoon "live" from downtown DeWitt. Both only on the AM station, 1320. At end of my broadcast, I did a short interview with the new Miss Iowa from Davenport. Sharp girl. Went to a finishing high school in Boston and just graduated from Princeton. Wants to be a doctor. Her parents are in school administration with Davenport schools.
Fireworks tonight at Bellevue, Grand Mound, LaMotte, Oxford Junction and Clinton. I'll miss fireworks as I'll be working at the drive-in theatre tonight.
Tomorrow, will be a Holiday for most people. But in radio, the show goes on as always. I'll be here at 6:30 to wake um up on FM. Bob Warner (nearing 30 years at KMAQ) will get things going on both AM and FM at 6. He does both stations until 6:30 when I arrive. Don't get out that hankie ...I'm used to this after nearly 41 years.
No real news to report either...no births, deaths, fires, etc....so, will end the July 4th Daily.....have a nice night...and a good Holiday tomorrow.
Thanks to all the new entries in the KMAQ Guest Book.
Will try to have a report for you tomorrow.

Nice day, mostly sunny, breezy and high in mid 70's. Yesterday, late afternoon and evening, we got 7/10 inch of rain and the June total was nearly 6 inches...more than average for the month. Everything is really green around here.
Maquoketa Volunteer Firemen were called to a house fire near Baldwin at noon today....to the Paula McCardle residence. A cigarette in an upstairs bedroom started a mattress on fire. The fire was contained to the mattress and the house sustained only smoke and water damage. Firemen were at the scene about 30 minutes.
Shannon Williams of Maquoketa is the mother of a girl born Tuesday at the local hospital.
No deaths to report.
Short report today, sorry.
