Beautiful weekend weather...today, no rain, but mostly cloudy and a high of around 80. A few sprinkles this morning.
Went to the Memorial Celebration in Andrew yesterday...good turn out...nice little parade and a delicious beef dinner was enjoyed by Nancy and I, prepared by the Andrew Fireman.
This monring, the Memorial Day program in Maquoketa was moved to the middle school gym, because of possible rain.
A Moline woman was injured...listen to this...after a fall in the middle of the night at Eden Valley Park south of Baldwin. Abby Culvert, age 19, was walking across a bluff with her boyfriend around 1:45 yesterday morning. She lost her footing and fell about 20 feet in between two rocks. She had to be extracated from the rocks by use of a firemen's basket. She was then carried to a rescue vehicle and transported to the Jackson County Public Hospital where she was treated and released. The entire rescue
lasted, I was told, around 3 hours and envolved the following: Maquoketa Fire & Rescue, Baldwin First Responders, The JCPH Ambulance, the Clinton County Conservation people who run the park, and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
Melissa and Steven Bormann of Maquoketa had a boy, born last Friday at the hospital here in town.
Ferne A.Siegel died last Friday night in Reno,Nevada, where she had been living, but she lived most of her life in Maquoketa. Services are pending at the Carson & Son Funeral Home here in town.
Can you believe it.. the Chicago Cubs beat my St. Louis Cardinals 3 straight games! I'm holding back tears as I type this. Poor pitching, the blame.
Have a good week..

Horrible day for baseball fans....the Cardinals lost another game to the Cubs.
The four year old boy killed yesterday at a Spragueville farm was Devon Benis, son of Michelle Benis of Davenport. Accident happened at the Duane Sprank residence, rural Spragueville. The boy was sliding down a bank and slid into the path of a truck driven by Perry Feller of Bellevue, who was entering the farm yard and did not see the boy. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by Jackson County medical examiner Dr. Paul Koob of Maquoketa.
Nothing else to report.

Another beautiful day in Maquoketa...high 85.
A 4-year-old boy died after he was hit by a truck this afternoon near Spragueville. The Sheriff's Department is withholding the name of the victim, pending notification of relatives.
Three Maquoketa students were suspended from school this week for verbal threats against people and buildings in Maquoketa. Their names and ages were not released. The content of the threats were not released either. I have heard that two are boys from the Delmar area and the other boy is from the Baldwin area. Police searched schools yesterday and no weapons or bombs were found. Many people...kids and parents, were very concerned of course, but only 4 students did not come to school today because of the threats. Since the threats also named nest Tuesday (in addition to today), Police will be at the schools on Tuesday. Tuesday will be the last day of school and also a short day.
Students had been and are still scheduled to be let out at 12:30 P.M. Tuesday. There were no problems today at any of the Maquoketa schools. Charges against the 3 students are pending. No arrests have been made....... Guess this sort of thing is happening all around the country....the aftermath of the Colorado school shooting.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at 10 this morning up on the hill across the highway from Wal Mart, for Maquoketa's new 40-room assisted-living SENIOR COMPLEX that is being built by a Cedar Rapids firm. It is going to be nice. Should be done late this winter, February or March. It is on the new Ehler Street, that goes right past Cressey Construction, off of West Platt.
Jack and Pam Rosenberg's new liquor store, JR'S WINE & SPIRITS opened today. I had a tour from Jack and it is a nice place. I'm sure it will do well.
75 people gave blood in Maquoketa yesterday...including 7 first-timers. Delores Klein heads this up for the Red
Cross.
Andrew, Iowa's annual Memorial Weekend Celebration is this Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Most of activities are on Sunday, including the afternoon parade.
HAVE A NICE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

At Rotary today, sat between 2 of Maquoketa's SENIORS...Asher Schroeder and Bob Melvold. Program was about Shriner's Hospitals. Like always, I dozed a little...but didn't feel bad this week as Asher did a little too.
The Jackson County Public Hospital has a new Executive Director, a native of Epworth, Iowa. He is Curt Coleman, age 33, now the Ast. Windy, sunny and nice....looks like the weather may be okay for the Memorial Day weekend coming up.
Attended the Chamber of Commerce meeting at noon today at the Decker Hotel. Guest speaker was School Supt. Rod Montang who talked about the 1% Sales Tax Increase to be included on the June 29th ballot. If passed, the l% extra would be pro-rated for all school districts in Jackson County and the money could be used for infrastructure expenditures only....such as building repairs or new buildings. The tax would be collected for a period of 10 years. In Iowa, so far, since the new State Law allowed this on a county basis, six counties have approved it and six have not.
There was a school board sponsored farewell reception last night at the High School cafeteria for retiring Principal Dick Wold. He was presented with a nice plaque. I talked to Dick a few minutes and he said he plans to stay here in Maquoketa. Said
his daughter Theresa is getting married this fall and he will visit her when she gets settled in her new home in Texas. Son Mike is married and is a Farm Bureau Insurance man in this area, lives in Maquoketa. Younger son Andy goes to college. His ex-wife Holly has been manager of Crestridge Nursing home in Maquoketa for many years and Dick is not married.
A Maquoketa High School freshman has withdrawn from school for the rest of the year after he threatened several students this morning. Principal Dick Wold said the student will be withdrawn for the final 4 days of school with the grades he presently has. He was no expelled. Wold said the student made a verbal threat against several students on the bus this morning. There was no weapon shown. His name was not released. At the school board meeting last night, Administrators in the district agreed to a salary freese for one year, since the district has found it necessary to make cutbacks.
Brandy Shanahan and Joseph
Crawford of Maquoketa are parents of a girl born Saturday at the local hospital.
Longtime barber Bill Merrick was elected Maquoketa VFW Commander for the next year at a meeting last night. He gets the job for a third time June 1st. Retiring Commander Don Roeder, Maquoketa dentist, was elected to the position of Quartermaster, which is like being Secretary. He replaces Muriel Allen who has had that job for a long time. Muriel was elected Adjutant. The VFW meets once a month at the Post Home a mile north of Maquoketa on old highway 61. It was announced that Maquoketa's Avenue Of Flags will be set up this Saturday morning at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Sat with Rochelle Ray at the Chamber Lunch this soon. She ownes Ray's Fashions ladies clothing store, right next to husband Tom Ray's jewelry store. Both nice stores. Said she will be going to Oklahoma in June to visit son Jeff and his family. Jeff has a big jewelry store down there. He has 4 children, 3 boys and a girl...the oldest
being age 8.
That will do it for another day.

Partly sunny and cool today in Maquoketa.
JR'S WINE AND SPIRTS (new liquor store), owned by Jack and Pam Rosenberg, is looking pretty good. Front has the look of a a bar in the old west. There's a drive-up window to the north and parking to the south. Located next to Rosenberg Auto. It will open this Friday.
Anybody seen Buddy Olsen, former Maquoketa Police Chief in the 40's and 50's? Maybe it was in the 60's and 70's.
No big news over the weekend...no babies born...no deaths...a few arrests as always.
Burkey's Trading Post has opened on East Platt Street, in the corner former gas station across from what was Cornelius Farm Store for many years. No other details.
The new manager of the Country Club had a special dinner show Saturday night featuring a couple comedianes....and I heard today it was a full house. Maquoketa is interested in good comedy apparently.
The new
Maquoketa river bridge over the Maquoketa River on old highway 61 North....is curved. Ever see a curved bride over a river??
Saturday night was a beautiful night for stock car racing in Maquoketa. Local winners were: Dale Weeks (truck); Ron Poll from Delmar; Garry Anderson; Dave Clark; Scott Olson of Preston; and other Maquoketa drivers.....racing Saturday night....Dale Weeks; Ron Paulsen; Randy Shanahan; Darin Shady; Kris Vohringer; Dustin Edwards; Bob Bowman; Tolly Howell; Brent Nugent; Bob Garien; Scott Schurbon; Randy Franzen; Bruce Current; Ray Cox,Jr. and Scott Barton.
The Jack and Jill Brat Stand was busy over the weekend...First Lutheran Church worked it and proceeds to be used for their upcoming 75th Anniversary. When Nancy and I stopped for a brat (ok,I had 2) Dr.Rask and Galen Bartels were working the grill. Their wives were inside. Doc said a little earlier, a person came in and purchased 42 brats....don't what the occassion was. If
you live in Maquoketa, some day you will end up working a shift at the brat stand for some organization. $l.50 for brat (or footlong hotdog) and pop.
Saturday, the new Awesome Car Wash had their grand opening and they offered a brat and pop for a dollar.
Mel Stiles (retired dry cleaner) has retired again. This time as a parttime "greeter" at Wal Mart. Been doing that since the Wal Mart store opened around 10 years ago.
Jack and Jill has gone out of the Video Rental business. Rumor has it, Gilmore Dry Cleaners will take the space for 24-hour-a-day dry cleaning drop-off and pick-up. Just a rumor at this time. Small video stores are closing rapidly across the country...at the rate of 400 a month. In Maquoketa, we still have two fulltime video stores, on South Jones and other on West Platt, plus my store next to theatre, which is open only Friday and Saturday. Shelly Hoye has run that for me for many years. Cinema Movie Rentals and it has a WEB SITE. SHELLY works fulltime at
the Court House in auditor's office and is courthouse computer specialist. Dad is teacher Claire Hoye. We also have a store downtown that buys and sells video movies.
Julie Streets has announced that she will close here KOUNTRY KRAFT store this summer. Has been in business for around 20 years. Too bad, but her health isn't the best. Her husband is vice-principal at high school and longtime sophomore basketball coach, Dennis Streets.
Coach Bill Flemming finially traded in his old Caddie for another..this one 3 years old, I'm told. He also has given "her" a beautiful diamond. Judy Neiss. No wedding DATE though. They have been dating on and off for quite awhile.

The Maquoketa High School Chamber Singers left yesterday for Washington D.C. where they will represent Iowa at then National Festival of States. This year the festival marks the 200th Anniversary of teh death of George Washington. Maquoketa was the only school in Iowa to be selected to perform at this national event. Pam Crawford, vocal director, said the trip was made possible through local fund raising efforts. Cost to go for each student, $200.
The Maquoketa High School band has been asked to perform at Orlando, Florida. The band members will be gone form June 7 - 14. The band, directed by Kent Crawford, also has had fund raising activities. I have not heard what the cost per student is for this trip.
We still have nothing on the Friday morning accident....as the Deputy that investigated has not filed a
report and was unavailable for details. News Director Sheri Melvold said she plans to talk to the Sheriff next week and plead for quicker accident report filings.
Todd and Elizabeth Gohlman Hirsch are parents of a boy born yesterday at Itasca, Illinois. Grandparents are Florian and Karen Steffen of Maquoketa.
Inez Nissen, age 62, of Toronto, Iowa, died last night at her home. Survivors include.... her husband, Donald and a son, Tolly Howell of Maquoketa.
Lots of new readers of this report...thank you. A rainy day today...not good weather for the Chamber of Commerce Beef Month promotion downtown. Even so, they sold over 12-hundred burgers with pop. Good ... very good .. had two over the noon hour...hard to beat beef off the grill. Had my sandwiches with daughter Lonna and Bob and Karen Thomas. Bob likes to eat....even asked Karen if she was going to eat all of her sandwich, after devouring his two. He is Lutheran Brotherhood insurance man for this area...Karen not working at the present. Years ago, Bob managed, then owned, the Ben Franklin Store in town. We no longer have one, but there is one in DeWitt.
St. Louis Cardinal baseball game on KMAQ-FM tonight, from LA, so we don't start broadcast until 9....be on-the-air with the game until after midnight. Jimmy Saunders, one of our daytime announcers who works Friday nights too...will be at the controls. He always worries about an extra-inning game, especially

Barbara Reed, age 60, formerly of Maquoketa, died Tueday in Cedar Rapids and services will be Saturday at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in Hiawatha. I have no other information on survivors, when she lived in Maquoketa, or what she may have done when she lived here.
Numbers are picking up, as to how many are checking this report...the last week or so, I have been getting around 40 hits a day.
Tim Melvold, age 15, of Maquoketa, son of KMAQ's News Director, Sheri Melvold, has joined the KMAQ staff as a part-time announcer. He likes the work and has a good voice. He lives with his mom but spends a lot of time also with his dad, Doug,
Publisher of the Maquoketa Newspapers. I never thought I'd have a Melvold on the staff, now I have two. Now, as for many years, KMAQ and the paper are friendly competitors. OF COURSE, WE CONTINUE TO BE THE BETTER ADVERTISING MEDIA AND HAVE MORE AND FASTER NEWS COVERAGE THAN THE PAPER. Bob Melvold, Tim's grandfather, is 80 and still writes for the paper and his wife, Francis, still oversees the Tri State Graphics print shop located in the same building as the newspaper on West Quarry Street. And, sons R.B. and John work at the WEB Printing Plant in the Industrial Park...their wives too.

It rained all night and a little this morning then turned out to be a cloudy day in the 60's.
Some excitement in Maquoketa this morning. About 125 Maquoketa High School students walked out of their class this morning to protest the school board's cuts of social studies classes next year. The students marched down Vermont to Platt Street then over to Main and back to the high school along Summit. Once they returned to the high school, about half of the students sat in the hallway and refused to go back to their class. By 11 A.M., high school Principal Dick Wold said all were back in class without further incident. A TV crew was here, so Maquoketa will make the tv news tonight.
Coming back to Maquoketa for the fair? You will notice some changes. The fairboard and the Pearson Building board have decided to spend around $50,000 for some concrete street paving and additional parking spaces around the Person
Center. Also, two additional air-conditioners have been installed in the Pearson Building. The original four did not do the job as hoped. With six, it should be cool in any kind of weather.....a place to cool off while at the fair. The building is used during the fair for commercial exhibits and some of the 4-H displays. Also to be completed by fairtime, new tile floors in the main entry of Pearson and in the 4 restrooms. Money had been put in reserve for the improvement projects, so no loans were necessary.
A birth.....Becky Moses and Stephen Jones of Maquoketa are parents of a girl born Monday at the hospital here in Maquoketa.
Talked to Ergon Penningroth of Maquoketa this morning. His wife's class of l939 at Baldwin High School will have their 60th Class Re-Union this summer. There were 8 in the class. All 8 or living. Ergon was in the class of 1938.

The warmest day this Spring for Maquoketa..sunny and in the 80's.
Maquoketa Community School Board members meet tonight and will be asked to cut nearly $l56,000 out of the present budget and $254,000 out of next year's budget. It is not a popular proposal. I'll have a report tomorrow.
Some thefts over the weekend. Some Anhydrous Ammonia was taken from C & J Service Company at Maquoketa. A boat listed at $3,000 was taken over the weekend from Bob's Marine at Bellevue and some boat parts were taken over the weekend from Clark's Boats at Bellevue.
Three Maquoketa Juveniles were charged with reckless use of fire after they tried to start a fire in the pumphouse at the Maquoketa Swimming Pool. Charged were Paul Schultz, age 15....Kevin Bell, age 11 and David Simpson, age 10. They used a lighter and some school papers to start the fire....but a city employee happened to drive by and the kids ran off. No
damage to the building.
Ruth Siegel, age 62, of Hazelton and formerly of Maquoketa, died Saturday at her home of a heart attack. She is survived by her husband Don and 2 children, and a sister, Lois Elkinds of Maquoketa and LaVonne Morehead of Maquoketa.

A new look for the Daily Report. Now in blue and white instead of black and white. Also, I will now be able to have paragraphs.
Big day today for Democrats. Former Senator and Pro Basketball player Bill Bradley was in town today, at St.Representative Bob Osterhaus's house. Bob has a huge sunroom, perfect for an event such as this, lots of room. I didn't make it, but News Director Sheri Melvold went and said there was a big turn out. There was a 5th grade class there and a few high school and college students, and all partipated in about an hour and a half question and answer segment. Sheri said he IS tall....and he IS getting good coverage and press comments on this his second visit to Iowa in less than a month. Road construction on highway 61 is going on today, a Saturday and consequently, traffic is backed up on highway 64 for a block or two at all times. Lots of traffic too because of last-minute Mother's
Day shopping being done today. The Wal-Mart lot was full this afternoon and Walsh's Hardware also had a special sale out that way today with cars everywhere.
Cloudy day today and around 60, but looks like Mother's Day will be pretty nice.
So, I'll close for today amd to the mothers reading this...HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TOMORROW.

Manager Nancy Jacobs, celebrating her l8th year with us, said as always, they will open a half-hour earlier this Sunday, at 10:30......Jack Jones, manager of my theatre, was in Des Moines yesterday to see a new sneak preview of the new Star Wars movie...shown to only 500...said it was good...it opens in a couple weeks, but I won't be running it until late June, probably....they, the experts, are predicting it will surpass
"Titanic" in business. I doubt that, but I beleive its first week will be huge..like maybe 50-million. But then, I predicted the horse that would win the Derby...and it finished last......Jon Cornelius, thanks for joining this daily report....Jon's folks are Floyd and Margie...check out his entry in the KMAQ Guestbook.....HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND

Most recently, he played solo with his accordion and electric organ. He is survied by wife
