WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 1999

Party sunny and in the 50's today......The Maquokta doctors told JCPH Board members yesterday that they don't want to work weekends anymore. For some time now, the hospital has contracted with a Waterloo firm to cover the Emergency Room Sundays until Monday morning...at $63.00 an hour, with local doctors covering the rest of the weekend. Now, local doctors would like to see contracted "emergency room" coverage from Friday night until Monday morning. Hospital CEO Harry Geller, said under the proposal, the hospital would probably break-even under the proposal. However, the hospital could LOOSE money under the plan, IF the emergency room NUMBERS should drop-off. The Board will vote on the matter at their next meeting, next week. Apparently, mamy small hospitals already use "contracted" service over the entire weekend. I'll keep you posted.......Mary Jo Smith, formerly Mary Jo McCarthy, age 56, died at her Thompson, Illinois home yesterday after a 6-month battle with cancer. This interviewed 4 finalists, and Thursday night, decided on Lorene Dykstra, Principal the last nine years at Griswold High School, a smaller high school than Maquoketa...and located in Southwestern Iowa. She is the first-ever woman High School Principal for Maquoketa, I beleive. In my 41 years in town, the Principals have been Marv Maire, Bill Brooks, Bill Lamb, Bob Hammond, and Dick Wold, the last 14 years...and I'm not sure I have them in the correct order. Wold has taken the early-retirement option. The Board will officially hire Dykstra at their next regular meeting and she will probably start in August.....60 people attended a City Council Ccmittee Meeting last night to object to a proposal to set up an inspection and fees ordinance for landowners who rent properties. Those in attendance and their petition represented 700 of the 800 rental units in town. I didn't realize there were that many. The tax asking will be about $15.07 per thousand dollars valuation..........Maquoketa Reserve officers will be able to carry guns while they assist regular police officers, but the question of PAYING them was postponed. Maquoketa City Council members approved allowing the volunteer officers to carry hand guns by a vote of 6 to 1 with Councilman Neil Morehead voting against. Maquoketa Police Chief Bob Andersen had requested that the reserves receive some compensation. Now they receive $1 a year for their services. They are also required to provide most of their equipment, but training is provided by the city. Regarding the guns, theChief said the guns would only be used when reserves are worthing WITH certified officers and they would not be allowed to take them home......Some Maquoeketa residents will be getting a survey form in the mail, asking their opinion on a new swimming pool for Maquoketa...what type and where it should be located....800 forms were mailed..and the form was also printed in the newspaper for others that want to complete the survey. The old swimming pool, going back to the mid 40's, won't be opening this summer because it will cost too much to repair. The newer pool, over 20 years old, will be available for swiming and lessons....Maquoketa's new street sweeper has arrived and is being used....thank goodness....streets need a sweeping.....and I think I'll just sweep myself out of this office and head dowt the street for a cup of coffee.
