Dennis's Daily Worldwide Report

Dennis' Daily Worldwide Report

FEBRUARY 28, 1999

It is the last day of February and cloudy in Maquoketa. The Manager of my Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant is 14 years old today. That' right, she's 14. Been with me for over 17 years too. She and husband Marv live in Springbrook......Cole Pape was the l30 pound Champion at last year's State Wrestling Tournament and this year he is the 135 pound Champion, after winning the Championship match last night......Heavyweight Jake Veach, a Senior, wasn't expected to win probably more than two matches out there but got into the Championship Round last night but eneded up getting pinned in the last 30 minutes of his match. So, even though he lost, everyone is extremly proud of his 2nd place at State. They will be welcomed home with a reception at 4 this afternoon at the high school and KMAQ will (I'll be doing it) broadcast the event and Dr. Paul Koob will be Emcee....Paul did another great job covering the matches for us again this year. Maquoketa has been to the State Tournament 8 years and I believe has had a Champion 6 of the 8 years, and a finalist all 8 years. Eric Juergens, who now wrestles for Iowa, won 4 years in a row and now Cole Pape, who is just a Sophomore, can equal that. We have a great coach in Mr. T, Jeff Tampier.....The most popular place in Maquoketa today? THE DEPOT RESTAURANT...they started a Sunday BRUNCH today...for $6.25 and have been at nearly fullhouse all the time. That's good...and they've been advertising it all week long on KMAQ too......I'm 5 days away from beginning the KMAQ-travel Busload trip to Las Vegas (Mar 5-14)...leave early Friday morning. So, for l0 days, maybe more, you won't be getting a daily report from me, but I'll have a catch-up report soon after I get back, that I suppose will be quite long. Have a good week.

FRIDAY, FEB. 26, 1999

A rainy afternoon in the Timber City.....Maquoketa's two wrestlers at State are doing well...both have won their opening two matches....Cole Pape at l35 and Jake Veach at Heavywight. Both wrestle again at 9:l5 tonight.....The Jackson County Hospital Board met this week and gave raises from 2 to nearly 8 percent and the raises will cost over $250,000 more in the next year.....The nurses raise was 6.5% and they can now make a maximum of $17.50 an hour......Leonard Ernst is the new Lockmaster at the Bellevue Lock and Dam..a nice guy..talked to Rotary this past Wednesday. Starting this year, the Lock and Dam will be getting a 40-million-dollar overhaul that will take 3 years. Those L & D's were built in the 30's. Leonard's son is Andy Ernst, the Sports Editors of the Maquoketa Newspaper......Robert John Miller of Maquoketa, age 64, died this morning at a Davenport hospital. He is survived by his wife Joyce....Will be backk tomorrow to let you know how the 2 wrestlers did this evening and to let you know if Bellevue and Preston girls are going to theState Tournament. If they win tonight, they go. We are doing both games tonight "live" from Cedar Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids. Have a good weekend.

THURSDAY, FEB 25, 1999

Cloudy and a high of 39 today, but 40+ for rest of week....At the school board meeting this week, it was announced that the l999 High School Graduation Day is going to be Sunday, June 6th, but in the year 2000, it will be earlier, on Sunday, May 21.....Lots of Court news and a few fender benders the last couple days and not much else. Maquoketa wrestlers go at it at State tonight so I'll have those results for you tomorrow. No recent deaths either...so guess I'll close a short report and hope I'll have more for you tomorrow.

TUESDAY, FEB. 23, 1999

I'm a little today....working the board tonight on FM as we had game on both Am and Fm....Iowa won over NW and the DeWitt girls lost their tournament game in DeWitt against Davenport Assumption. DeWitt blew a 7 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter to loose by about 8 points. They were ranked l7 in the State and should have won......At the School Board meeting last night, longtime Maquoketa teacher and administrator Dick Wold announced that he was taking early retirement from his High School principal job that he has had for 14 years. He has been with the District 31 years and is 55 years old and plans to stay in Maquoketa. Also announcing her retirement, longtime Briggs Secretary Carolyn Waite, who has had the job around 25 years....The school Board also decided to ask the County Board of Supervisors to put on a June election ballot, the proposition to raise the sales tax from 6 to 7% in Jackson County and the school would use that extra l% for infrastructure needs in the School Districts of Jackson County. Bellevue, East Central and Preston Districts have also shown an interest in this idea...which is a popular subject in other Iowa counties. Clinton County will vote on the same issue in early March......A bad fire this morning on South Main Street at the building that was last used for a Pet Store but for many years was the home of The South Inn Supper Club. The fire started in the southeast corner and went to the upstairs apartment too. The building was saved in the 3-hourbattle. The building is currently owned...by the Maquoketa State Bank after the last owner could not keep up the contract. A truck driver lives in he apartment upstairs but he was on the road and not at home. The downstairs was being cleaned for possible new tennant. The cause of the fire is not known and the fire Marshall will be called in to investigate but foul play is not suspected.....It is 9:30 and I'm heading home to bed....5:30 A.M. will come quickly. Sorry I was late today.

MONDAY, FEB. 22, 1999

Sunny this morning, cloudy this afternoon, a high of 37. Just one story today and a big one. Jackson County Public Hospital Administrator Harry Geller resigned today and will accept a job as head of the Princeton, Illinois hospital. The city is slightly larger than Maquoketa but the hospital is 3 times larger. Geller has been here since 1994 and has been responsible for "down-sizing" the hosital and putting it in a profitable condition. More later. Sorry, but that's all.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1999

Sunny and cold today. Bill Flemming's Maquoketa Cardinal pulled off one of the biggest upsets inFlemming's 30-year career last night, defeating ranked Bettendorf, a ranked team, 62 to 5l on their home court. Denger had 20 points for Maquoketa. Last year, here in town, Maquoketa almost did it, but Bettendorf won by a single point........ In the District Wrestling meet here in town yesterday, Maquoketa had 4 trying for State and 2 made it. Last year's defending State Champion at 130,Cole Pape, is going back to State as a Sophomore and will wrestle this yer at 135 and also going for Maquoketa will be heavyweight, Jake Veach. DeWitt will have one wrestler there. The State Tournament is this coming weekend in Des Moines and KMAQ's Dr. Paul Koob will cover it for us again on KMAQ. HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1999

Sunny and cold this morning and sunny and cold this afternoon, with a high around 30.....A Maquoketa foot doctor, who pleaded guilty to overcharging the government for treatment of the elderly patients has been sentenced to 5 months in prison. He is 44-year-old Mark Intlekofer, and he was sentenced yesterday in Federal Court. He also must pay restitution in an amount over $23,000. Under federal law, there is no opportunity for parole. A Dr. Steve Craig has opened a Podiatrist office in the same location as Intlekofer, but I don't know what the circumstances are. Sorry, but that's it for today.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1999

Cool and very little sunshine today. A longtime Maquokta business has been sold. Campbell Clean-Up has been sold to a national firm, Allied Waste, doing business as Hawkeye Disposal, based in Clinton. Jetter Hauling in Clinton has also been purchased by Allied. They too have some accounts in Maquoketa. The business was sold by Doug and Jeannie Owen and they said all 13 employees are expected to stay and there will be no change in service and no increase in rates. Doug will not stay with the firm and will be looking at several options. Jeannie will continue to operate their laundromat on East Platt. Jeannie's parents, Lawrence and MaxineCampbell started the business in 1951. In 1990 Doug and Jeannie bought half of the company...and her brother Larry owned the other half. Then in 1994 the Owen's bought out Larry's interest. Larry has been an employee of the firm since. Maquoketa is served also by Rockwell Clean-Up, and there has been a rumor that Allied is also interested in buying out Rockwell, which then would give them the entire town. I'll keep you posted.....Chris and Lori Knoebel of Des Moines are parents of a girl born Thursday. Grandparents are Warren and Rose Ann Roberts and Dave and Rose Knoebel of Maquoketa.....The Maquoketa girls lost their tournament game last night to Davenport Assumption, by just one point..almost pulling and upset. No local basketball tonight....Maquoketa plays powerful Bettendorf in a non-conference game tomorrow night, there....and Maquoketa will host the District Wrestling Tournament tomorrow. Four Cardinals are in it and hope to win and go to State.....Have a nice weekend.

WEDNESDAY, FEB 17, 1999

Sunny by cool day.....At Monday night's City Council meeting, a lot of discussion on a bad odor occassionally from the industry that processes animal blood, in the building formerly occupied by Swiss Valley.....but, the company is aware of the problem and hopes to rectify is soon. Maquoketa's taxes may go up a little next year...I'll keep you posted. Senator Charles Grassley,R, Iowa, visited the Maquoketa Rotary Club today. He's been in politics since 1958. A packed room for this visit. Maquoketa Cardinal Boys easily defeated Monticello last night on the local floor. Tomorrow night, the girls play their opening tournament game against a strong Davenport Assumption team and on their floor, so Maquoketa will need a miracle to win. If they loose, the season ends for them. Here's a neat WEB SITE to visit, put together by some Middle-school students: www.maquoketa.k12.ia.us/mms.html And so much for today...heading for the VFW Fish Fry and then the Lenten Service at 1st Lutheran.

What a weather day. 53 overnight low...got up to 65 today, a new record by 8 degrees...then half-inch of rain this afternoon, then falling temperatures to low 30 by 5 P.M.....cold tonight and tomorrow...lots of school sporting events cancelled for tonight....but, we are looking to be back in 40's by Sunday......At a meeting last night, it was decided to have a July 4th Celebration Maquoketa this summer, replacing the Flag Day event which has bombed the first and last 2 years.....the July 4th event is to include a parade, and of course, the fireworks at night, which we have had the last couple years....so, if you come home to Maquoketa for the 4th, sounds like there will be something going on for your visit.....3 or 4 service clubs met last night to make the decision for the celebration......Bertha Holtz, age 86, died this morning at Crestridge Nursing Home...services pending at Lahey Funeral Home here in Maquoketa....my "beater" 83 Olds Wagon got sick this week...windshield wipers wouldn't stop running and couldn't get the front passenger door to open...but just got a call from Waugh Auto and she's back to normal and so I'm going to pick her up and head for home. Don't know how many miles she has...as the speedometer went out about 8 years ago..but I would guess around l50,000....runs....but no one likes to ride it anymore with me....so, thanks goodness, we do have Nancy's Buick....The Maquoketa idea for mandatory drug testing of athletes...isn't going over with everybody...sounds like getting the law changed will be a rough go. Quad City Times took an editorial stance against yesterday...I'll keep you posted. Even the new Guv isn't completely for it....check back again soon.

It will take old highway 61 traffic over the river. The old bridge just northeast of the baseball diamonds will be torn down. The new bridge will be straight north and no longer will jog to the left at the furniture store like it does now. The wierd intersection in front of Maquoketa Lumber and Owl Furniture, will be corrected to make for a regular 4-way intersection...much safer. But this new bridge will not be done until the end of summer. The old bridge will be closed starting in April,so for a few months, those living in that area will have an inconvenience....Rumor this week of a new truckstop being considered at the northwest part of the new 61 and 64 intersection....The Historical Society breakfast is tomorrow...and Lent is around the corner...St. Mark's Episcopal Church has announced that their annual Shrove Tuesday Chicken Dumplings Supper will be held on Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 16th..the night before Good Friday....and the annual Pops Concert will be held the final Sunday in February ...with Soup Supper...at the gym....been having that for years, and it includes the cake walk....Bob Melold's this week had an interesting story in paper about his l02 year old mother-in-law who lives in Florida, where he and Francis do some winter living....Ross River and wife Vivian had a booth at the Farm Show this week....they have been in ag business for over 40 years and still going strong. Son Dave just joined them in the Wieck Building Business.....Ross was one of the first advertisers on KMAQ when station went on the air in 1958. A hard worker. Vivian too. Ross is big IowaState Fan, as he graduated from ISU......The top cookies in the KMAQ Farm Show cooking baking contest were baked by Joyce Ostert of Maquoketa...winning her $25.....we had 69 entries, l more than last year...The Iowa Hawkeye basketball season is falling apart...and that is it for another week. Nothing else to report. Red Henton and his granddaughter Brooke entertained this afternoon and a big group enjoyed their singing. Brooke, age 17, sounds just like Patsy Cline and looks just like her mother, Judy. Have a good Friday.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1999

Sunny today and a high of 40...it felt like Spring.....Two Wyoming, Iowa men are being held in the Jackson County Jail on charges of theft in the 4th degree...after alledgely taking a cash box from A-l Electronics in downtown Maquoketa about 3 yesterday. They are 21 year old Daniel Fletcher and 2l year old Jason Beck. Court documents indicate a search warrant Monday evening resulted in recovery of more than $10,000 in stolen properth, much of it apparently from burglaries in Jackson County. The pair went into A-l Electronics about 3 yesterday and distracted the clerk, Velma Koranda. When they both left, she discovered the cash box missing......and also around 3 yesterday, during foggy conditions, 2 semi trucks and 2 other vehicles were involved in an accident at the new, temporary 61-64 intersection....traffic tied up for an hour or so but so serious injuries.....We are busy here at KMAQ getting ready for the 2nd Annual combined Farm & Home Show at the Pearson Convention Center on the fairgrounds.
