Still no snow...and nice weather for Christmas Day and the dayd after. Today, mostly cloudy and in the mid 30's. .....Mike Milder is the new Maquoketa Postmaster, replacing Churck Wharton who retired earlier this year. Mike was the Postmaster at West Branch the past 14 years. Looks to be around 40 or slightly younger. By the way, the new Handicap Entrance to the Maquoketa Post Office is finished and took months to build...have not heard cost, but it must have been a lot....looks okay, but does distract from the front of the building....has a long zig-zag ramp to it....I realy doubt if many will use it, but time will tell...it is the law that the access be available, only I would have made is a simpler, better appearing project by putting it to the South of building instead of the front....I lost two good friends yesterday....a husband and wife.....a situation thata doesn't happen often. Glen Brock, age 83 died at his home just northeast of Maquoketa, following a long illness. He was very critical the past few weeks and was with hospice care. Then yesterday, and I don't know the details as I was out of town, his wife Leona died at a Davenport hospital. Her illness was sudden, as my wife Nancy just saw her downtown last week. Brock have been Maquoketa business people for over 25 years, moving here from Clinton. Most of those years, he was in the lumber yard business, with used lumber a speciaity for many years. He would buy old lumber from buildings being demoshished in large cities...and also bought a lot of used railroad ties for resale. His wife Leona was bascially a housewife and was active in community organizatiions. In fact, she was a member of the Pearson Memorial Center Board, of which I am President. Hardly ever missed a meeting. They are survived by a son Cary, and his wife and severaly grandkids. Cary has a floral shop down where the old Lumber Yard was and also has a gift shop in downtown Maquoketa and DeWitt. Glen and Leona gave them lots of support with their busines places and growing family. Glen and Leona will be missed. Leona was 82. Services are pending at the Haylock, O'Hara and Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa......Well, I am on to the theatre, where I will play theatre manager for the nest 8 days. My manager Jack Jones left this morning on his annual Holiday visit to London and the theatre district of that great city. In Maquoketa, we are playing PATCH ADAMS, starring Robin Williams. I saw it Chrtistmas Day and it is an excellent true story comedy and doing very good business. We are also playing Mighty Joe Young and The Prince of Egypt...so we are playing three of the top movies in the country. Our admission is just $4.75 for adults...compared to $7.50 at the new 18 plex that just opened before Christmas at the north edge of
Davenport. I expect the new theatre to hurt us a little. Have a good week.
