Windy and cooler today, but still in 50's. Yesterday, hit 66 and broke the Maquoketa record for Nov 29...of 62 that has held since 1941....Lots of vandalism over the weekend here in town. Six or seven people hit with total damage near $1,000.....The West new lane of highway 61 thru Maquoketa opens Wednesday. Work then starts on the completion of East lane which is expected to be completed next summer.....Thanks Clayton Clark of Tuscon for e-mail saying he checks this report regularly....and glad to hear from Charles Anderson again with message that he is still checking regularly too.....Maquoketa Cardinal Girls basketball is underway for the season and they lost 2 games over the weekend. Young rebuilding team, so I don't think they will have a very good season. Bill Flemming's boys are in a jamboree at Clinton tonight, playing just a "half" a game against Calamus-Wheatland.....and that has to be it for now.

Beautiful day in Maquoketa...high of 66, 1 degree below the record set back in 1909. Tomorrow, back into the 60's again.....Busy shopping day in Maquoketa like everywhere else. Wal-Mart here in Maquoketa has a full parking lot by 6:15 this morning....A Baldwin hog farmer, Ron Mohr, age 57, is giving aways fullgrown hogs rather than sell them at record low prices. He so far has given 27 and they will be picked up tomorrow at his farm. He is getting lots of publicity....80 enjoyed the community thanksgiving dinner yesterday here in town, down from past years....Keith Croce of Maquoketa has had kidney problem since birth and has had two kidney transplants. The last lone in 1991, when he received one from his father, Bill, and now his body is rejecting that one. So, later this money, a first cousin, Terri Summer of Maquoketa. His younger brother Billy, age 27, also had a kidney transplant in 1979. Terri, who is 37, works as a cook at the Decker Hotel and will have to take off from work for severaly weeks. The transplant is scheduled for December 17th. A chili supper to benefit Keith will be held at Timber Lanes on December 12th. Donations can be sent to the Maquoketa State Bank. Keith has been hospitalized 50 times during his life.....Hattie Graves, age 91, died yesterday here in Maquoketa. She is survived by two sons, Doc and Bobbie. Have a good weekend.

Maquoketa is getting another new doctor. At the Hospital Board meeting this week, it was announced that Dr. Joel Snyder will be practicing with the Maquoketa Family Clinic on North Arcade Street, the Clinic that includes longtime doctor Cliff Rask. He will be practicing Obstetrics.......The blood drive in Maquoketa this past Monday resulted in 75 units...good, but low for a city the size of Maquoketa. Delores Klein, who heads the blood drive, was hoping for 100 units.....Jackson Country Gift Store in downtown Maquoketa was moved yesterday to THE ATTIC. I stopped in this afternoon and the bigger location is nice....Mild weather again today and the same forecast for tomorrow...HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Nice day and good forecast for rest of week...talking 50's for Thursday and 60's this weekend....Supervisors at their weekly meeting this monring, talked about the old truck stop building in Maquoketa, now owned by Jackson County. The building and about 4 acres has an assessed value of around $100,000 and the board would like to sell it. First, they scheduled a public hearing for input from the citizens. I'll keep you posted......Louise Kellams died last night at the Maquoketa Care Center. Age 92. I believe her husband was one of the founders and owners for many years of Kellams and Bertsch Heating firm in town.....Nothing else new.

Warm and breeze day in Maquoketa..high in the 50's.....Chance of some rain on Thursday, T-Day....Quiet weekend in the Old Timber City...so this will be short......Hayden Fry resigned today at Iowa Hawkeye Coach, after 20 years. He did a great job...just bad he had to close out with a loosing season....Tonight, Bill Flemming is having his Pop Night to introduce his basketball players...and tomorrow night, Coach Jeff Tampier unveils his team at a special at the Middle School gym, with admission a can of something for the Community Cupboard, located up at the United Methodist Church. Also, tonight, the MCHS girl's team partipates in the Preston Jamboree, featuring 8 teams and each playing a half-game of basketball.....So...the start of the l998-99 basketball and wrestling season is just about here......Thanks to Julie Frost in Gilbert, Arizona and former Maquoketa resident for being a regular in checking this WEB site weekly if not daily report.....And so much for this time.

Toni Marcus is the new Jackson County Beef Queen and Shannon Johnson is the new County Beef Princess.....The Bud and Lenora Frost Family was honored Sunday night at the annual 4-H recognition night at the fairgrounds here in Maquoketa. They recieved the Betty Sieverding 4-H Family of the Yer award....A car ran into a mobile home in Maquoketa at 9 last night. Tracey Urwin had her car parked in her driveway when it went out of gear and roll back and into the front of the mobile home owned by Robert Rockwell, also of 700 Pershing Road. $1,000 damage to the home....Jackson County's unemployment rate dropped slightly in October from September....from 3.1, down from 3.4 and compared to 3.2 a year ago. Iowa's jobless rate remained unchanged at 2.6%.....The Attic store downtown has purchased Jackson Country Gift Store next door and will move it into the north section of The Attic.....It looks like 2 former Maquoketa High School wrestling stars could be in the line-up for the Iowa Hawkeyes this season. All
American Eric Juergens is back for Iowa and will wrestle at 133 pounds. Eric's younger brother Marc is down to 125 pounds and could earn the starting spot at that weight. That means the two brothers would wrestle back to back just as they did in high school. Eric was 23-5-2 for the Hawkeyes last season and is just a Sophomore......Sage Rosenfelt, MCHS grad, could play some tomorrow when the Iowa State Cyclones play....and in Hawkeye basketball, Grandpa Mac McCausland, retired insurance agent and realator in Maquoketa will watch his grandson play regularly for the Hawkeyes this season, his last season.......Have a good weekend.

Cold and windy today. Down to around 20 tonight...you people in the warm climate...eat your heart out. We now get a chance to starting wearing our winter coats. And prettty soon, if we are good, we get some good ole snow......An 11 person committee was named today to do a study on Maquoketa Swimming Pool needs.....Maquoketa is getting ready for the annual Thanksgiving Day community dinner. This year it will be at noon Thanksgiving Day at the Senior Center on East Quarry Street. The dinner for those who have no place to dine on T-day.....Thanks to Lynn Wink of San Diego for sending e-mail saying he checks this report daily. He was raised in Oxford Junction. San Diego....let's see...that is the city that has perfect weather year aroound, I'm told. Kind of boring, isn't it Lynn? I was to San Diego once and enjoyed the visit. Pretty good weather for this time of the year continued today.....Everyone now and then I think about ending this daily report, which I believe is being checked by about 8 people, I get a nice e-mail, like the one today from former Maquoketa residents Steve and Diane White of Peoria, who enjoy the daily. Thanks for your comments.......And and e-mail letter also today from my first radio boss in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Bob Brown. I have a nearly full buss going to the Christmas show in that fine community November 28th.....Today, the came to measure-up for the new KMAQ front windows.....A new Credit Union building was announced today for Maquoketa. Dutrac is opening an office in Maquoketa next year after their new building is finished at the West edge of Maquoketa. They will employ 5 to start. The new building will be where the Hi-Ho Lanes bowling alley was in the 60's and where the Rose Garden was in the 70's and where a restaurant was later and that building was torn down resulting in an empty
large lot the last few years. The credit union is much like a bank and everyone can do business with it.....See you later.

Jackson County's first nude dancing establishment has received a permit from the county. The zoning administration for Jackson County approved the permit this morning.....Work started today on the new Maquokta river bridge north of Maquoketa on old highway 61....George Diesing, age 57, of Maquoketa died Monday at his rural home. Services will be Thursday at Carson and Son Funeral Home....KMAQ's annual Old Time Turkey Shoot starts tomorrow. A fun pre-Thanksgiving promotion we have been doing for over 30 years. Listeners call in and get a chance to shoot a turkey with the electronic gun....but they could also hit a pig or cow or duck....Christmas decorations went up in Maquoketa yesterday and today, put up by city crews. This year, all lof the "live" year-around trees will have white strings of lights. And, the big evergeeen at the Post Office was also decorated today. HO HO HO.

A well known Maquoketa woman died Saturday from complications of surgery. She is 77-year-old Grace (Mrs. Ed) Tubbs. Friends may call tomorrow at the Haylock,O'Hara and Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa and the funeral service will be Wednesday at the United Church of Christ. She has been very active in the community and was currently serving as President of the Library Board. She is survived by her husand Ed, one of the owners of the Maquoketa State Bank, and 3 sons, Steve of rural Maquoketa, Alan of DeWitt and William of Eldridge. Sorry, but I don't have time for anything else today.

Nice shiny day today, high 51.....Maquoketa has 2 swimming pools, the old one around 50 years old given to city by the late Ed Kirchoff and the newer one that now is around 20 years old. The oldest needs to be replaced as it no longer can be repaired and so now there is a citywide community being formed to study what to do. Some would like to see an indoor one in the plans. I'll keep you posted......Nude dancing may be coming to Jackson County. The man who owns the former KC Hall at rural LaMotte and then turned it into a teen bar...that closed...now wants to re-open it as a nude dancing place. The application looks okay, apparently, and now superviors and zoning board make a decision. There is one in Mount Joy north of Davenport. Ring-e-ding-e-ding-dong! Keep tuned. Mary Hurst, age 82, died Sunday. He husband was Don Hurst.....Tom Messerli, who is my Engineer here at KMAQ and has an electronic repair business in town, had a heart attack this week and has had two "balloon procedures" at
Davenport and is doing well. Will be home tomorrow or Saturday. Heard today that Barny McAfee had a heart bypass operation this week. His wife is Sue.....Have a good weekend.

VERY WINDY IN IOWA TODAY....winds 50-plus miles per hour since 6 this morning and still strong. About as bad as I have ever seen around here. HOW BAD??
KMAQ'S front windows....both big ones...blew in at 7:20 this morning. Quite a noise when it happened. I was on-the-air when it happened. Called Dave Stockham and he and Bob Eaton were here in minutes to start job of boarding up the front. I don't think they were covered by insurance and if not, I'll be spending a couple thousand plus....get your hankies out. They were there for over 30 years. Other damage around town too. But, Maquoketa is still here. Veterans...take it easy tomorrow...its your day to remember and our day to say thanks. Thanks for checking in again.

Rainy, cold day in Iowa....and more of the same coming.
Weekend was dry,but cool. I was up to Horicon, Wisconsin Saturday to see my folks. Everyone excited up there about Wisconsin being 9 and 0 this season, with two games to go. They should get a New Year's day bowl game. I jokingly tell them the reason they are doing well is because they have a former Hawkeye Coach......Iowa didn't loose Saturday....because they didn't play.....Got a nice e-mail from Ron and Shirley Miller, former Maquoketans, who have lived in Arizona for over 10 years and now retired. They love it there. They have had 7 inhes of rain so far this year. We had over 7 in October alone. Thanks for getting back Shirley and Ron, give them heck on the pool tables....Learned today that Jack Kallenberger died of a heart attack yesterday in Texas, age 58. When I came to Maquoketa in 1958, he was a star football and basketball player for the Cardinals. He was running an icecream business in this area until a couple years ago when he and Carol moved to the Lone Star State.....Kenny
Marshall was killed in a farm accident this afternoon South of Maquoketa. I have no details yet. He was in his early 50's. In addition to farming, he worked for the farm management arm of Maquoketa State Bank, working with Harlan Tondurum. His wife Elaine also works at M-S-B.....Clayton Hovey died today at age 74. Survived by wife Joy. His first wife, the former Dorothy McKinsey, died many years ago. His brother is Ron, who owns Hov's Pub here in town.....New party store is open now where Spaldings Footwear was. Nice store.....The Waterboy was the number 1 movie over weekend nationally and did very well also at my theatre. I have been told it is quite funny...Had a chat with Tom and Rochelle Ray today. Both look good. Tom is down to 3 hours of work a day. Son Jeff has 2 or 3 jewelry stores in Oklahoma. Daugter Missy lives in California.....Had a bowl of soup at McAfees at noon, right next to Max Ray Jeweler, and ran into Judy Michel and her sister Sylvia. The sisters worked in the old Green
Mill back in the 50's when George was still alive. Judy is divorced and Sylvia's husband,Curly, is dead...Judy has a daughter living in Oklahoma and another in Arizona, both single. Sue McAfee worked for George also in those days and we were wondering also where Barb lives that alsol worked with thim. Barb Carr. Cold in Maquoketa today, high of 39. Snow chance this weekend.......Election news first: Jackson County has a new CountyRecorder, Phylis Gerlach, who worked in the office for many years until she was fired. No explanation ever made about that. She won over the Recorder for around a dozen years, Shirley Ritnour of Preston. Gerlach had defeated Ritenour in the Democratic Primary and ran this time as an Indpendent. Phylis has been working as a legal secretary for Attorney Mike Kane. Ritenour and her husand own and operate the Hometown Cafe in downtown Preston.....Both Jack Willey and J.C. Engel were re-elected as Supervors. Jack by only a 200 vote margin over Mick Clark of Maquoketa and J.C. won by over l,000 votes.....There were 5 candidates for the Jackson County Public Hospital Board and Gloria Jorgenson was re-elected and a new member of the board will be Gerald Gjerde of Maquoketa, who is Senior Pastor of the First Lutheran Church...The two winners were supported by Hospital CEO Harry Geller
and by the other board members, as welll as most of the local doctors......Also in election, we have a new Governor, the first Democrat elected since 1966. He from Mount Pleasant. Our State Representative Bob Osterhaus of Maquoketa was easily re-elected and our 2nd District Congressman Jim Nustle won again. He is from Manchester and defeated a man from Dubuque. The new Governor of Illinois ..Ryan...was born in Maquoketa in 1934 and lived here for about a year. He has some connection to the Bowman family......Jackson County used their new voting machines for the first General Election and they did poorly....slow, slow....some people took 8-12 minutes to vote and the last returns were not in until after midnight. Somebody goofed buying them......And..last night, Maquoketa played #l rated Decorah in the UNI Covered Dome at Cedar Falls and played a great game, but lost 14 to 9...almost winning in the final minute. They ended up the season with a 7 and 3 record....and so much for now.
