Hi. Hot and humid today. The last day of Spring. Summer officially starts at 9:03 A.M. tomorrow (Sunday), Maquoketa time....The Festival of Flags parade in Maquoketa this morning was short, but nice. Not a very big turnout for the parade or the festivities, but fun for all who attended. The Maquoketa Rotary Club Senior Citizens Band Concert and Ice Cream and Cake Social held this afternoon was poorly attended, but the band, directed by Jay Kahn, did a great job. It was the 25th Summer performance for the Timber City Band, known for many years as the Austin Avenue Band. Newcomers play every year. Matt Walker, MCHS grad and grandson of Red Henton, came today to play. He lives in Iowa City. Lots of good homemade cake and ice cream enjoyed by all....Larry Hager put up my new Concession Signs at t he drive-in today. One at each entrance to the snack area. Old one had been there since the drive-in was opened in 1950. The signs look good. Larry is going on 79, but still working almost fulltime
in the sign business. He's been painting signs for me for nearly 40 years... Have a good weekend.

Pretty nice day today....hot weather coming later in week.
Maquokta School Board voted last night to put the Auditorium issue on the regular September school election ballot. The 3.3 million issue must receive 60% approval. 1.2 million has been raised to go with the 3.3....including $500,000 pledged by bankers Ed and Grace Tubbs. The auditorium would be buildt next to the high school, would seat about 600 and would be maintained by the school district. Lots of interest in it, but many against it too....I doubt if it will pass......Dolch's Bakery may re-open. Clay and Holly Romer are thinking about buying the building and equipment....doing remodeling and adding new equipment and opening a bakery and coffee shop at the location that was a bakery for mamy years. Clay runs the longtime roofing business, Connell Supply Company, with his father Dub and Holly is a "nutrionist" at the hospital. I hear she would run the business and hire a baker to do the actual baking. Sure hope all goes as planned as it would be nice to have a bakery again in downtown
Maquoketa. They are thinking it may not be until this Fall before they could get open......Paul Flemming, age 34, that was in the 4-wheel ATV accident last week, has been released from the hospital in Iowa City. Good news......Curt Jett is the new manager of the Jack & Jill Grocery Store in Maquoketa. Before coming here, worked for Econofoods in Iowa City. He is married and has 2 young daughters.......BIG flag festival this Saturday in Maquoketa, including a morning parade.....The Timber City Band will play too...for the Rotary Ice Cream Social. It started out 25 years ago as the Austin Avenue Band. At that time, its organizer and director lived on Austin Avenue. It is composed of anyone in the area that played a musical instrument in high school and or college and like to play for the fun of it. They really do a great job and arae directed by Middle School band instructor Jay Kahn...a talented guy. So, come to Maquoketa Saturday for a funtime......Have to close. Hope your day was good and
that tomorrow will be even better.

Its kind of cool in Iowa....supposed to get down into the low 40's tonight.....Light turnout in the election yesterday. Jackson County will have a new County Recorder. Longtime recorder Shirley Ritenour of Preston was defeated by Phylis Gerlach of Andrew, and by a big margin. Shirley held the position 16 years and Phylis worked as her deputy for several years, before being fired by her a couple years ago. Details on the reason for firing never really came out. Phylis campaigned hard, going door-to-door in most of the County. She's a nice lady and will do a good job. Shirley also is a nice lady and has done a good job.....she will serve until December 31st. Phylis has no opponent in November, unless there would be a right-in campaign by somone. So, chances are very strong that she will take over the job on January 1st. She lost her husband in a car accident about a year or so ago.....Got to meet Charlie Anderson and his wife from Athens, Georgia. Charlie is a regular in bringing up this
report and has sent me a couple email letters. He graduated from Maquoketa High School 61 years ago. Was in Maquoketa a year ago for his 60th Class reunion. This past weekend, they were back, for her 60th re-union at Monticello. Red and Bernice Henton brought then over to KMAQ and we had a nice chat outside the KMAQ studios. First time I met them and it was a pleasure. Sorry we didn't have more time to visit. Charlie, I didn't even give you a quick tour of KMAQ. So, you have to come back next summer and I'll make an interview with and air it on my hit morning show. The Anderson's have lived in Georgia 23 years....both look good and enjoy traveling. Keep it up and come back to see us again......Red and Bernice both looked good....well, Bernice did. Red never was much to look at.....The Key Motel, about 25 years old, has been purchased by
Glen Karpinski, owner of the Super 8 Motel across the stree t. He is advertising for a manager on KMAQ and the newspaper. I haven't talked to him so I don't know what his plans are. Maquoketa has those two Motels, plus one older, smaller one and a downtown restored Hotel, plus a nice Bed N Breakfast.....A-1 Electronic, owned by Tom Messerli, moved downtown this week, to building across the street that was the home for a long time of "Furnishings Unlimited". Brad Deery Motors bought the building last year and all 3 renters had to re-locate because the building was supposedly being torn down for a car lot. Well, there has been a change. It will not be torn down afterall. The other two empty stores are now for rent. Messerli, who is a TV & Electronics repairman, was on West Platt and needed more room......Well...that will do it for tonight. Hope your week has been a good one so far. See you later.
