FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 1998

Greetings. Beautiful sunny day in Maquoketa, but only in 50's. DID YOU MISS THE DAILY? Sorry I have missed a few days. I changed internet servers. Now have long-distance service only, so for now, will be spending less time on the WEB. Long story.....a situation where the guy that has the service for Maquoketa doesn't like certain things my son Dave and I are doing and so, cut us off. How about that. Anyway, looks like a new internet provider will be starting up soon and the problem will be solved. I'll keep you posted. Because of this guy's actions, local residents that want to check this daily report can't do so, becuase he has blocked out the report for anyone on his system.......My dad is doing pretty well. He had been having minor miny strokes the last couple years, but the one last Friday was a big one. But, he is out of hospital and now at a care center real close to his home and they are giving him daily therapy to get his right arm and leg back to normal, and also working on his speech. A brand new place and really nice. He is 88. My mom is 85 and visits him daily. He wants to come home of course and hopefully will be able to in a few weeks. Nancy and I are going up to Horicon to see him again tomorrow and we will be back Sunday........Nothing earth shattering happened in Maquoketa this week. Well, better close for now. I doubt if I will get on here every day for awhile, but will try to have something at least 3 or 4 times a week, so hope you also will check a couple times a week......Have a good weekend.

TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 1998

Cloudy this morning, rain this afternoon, and a quick thunder and lightning storm around 7 tonight. More rain tonight and tomorrow and the long range forecast is for nice weather over the Easter weekend....The Maquoketa City Council met last night and there was good news for residents. They will see a 66-cent drop in landfill rates per month, beginning in July. Landfill assessments are listed on city water bills. In July, the rate will go from $3.50 per month down to $2.84 as a result of the Landfill assessment for the City going down to $81,460, a decrease of $l9,004. So, the City passed the savings on to the residents. Last year, the City had the same situation, but instead of lowering rates, used the left-over money for a city-wide clean-up. City Attorney Mike Kane said the law prohibits cities from using utility assessments for other projects, and he therefore advised the Council to stop the practice.......When Maquoketa's new 4-lane highway is completed in town, there will be a designated "city-route", using Main Street and Platt Street. Matt Osterhaus, an owner of Osterhaus Pharmacy, spoke to the Council on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce urging the city to seek the route from the DOT. An earlier check with the DOT had been made the the DOT said it could be done with special "signing" ifthe City would pay the cost of signs at a cost of over $8,700. The City Council agreed with Osterhaus and the group that was with him at the meeting, and decided to finance the project. Since it would not happen until this fall in the next fiscal budget, it will be budgeted in the 98-99 City Budget....In other news...Sherry Sokol of Maquoketa is scheduled to appear in court April l5th on a charge of allowing her 2 dogs to run at large. You can't have dogs running loose in Maquoketa, or barking that upsets neighbors and quite a few people are cited every year for this.....And so I close out today's report by barking out to you....ruff, ruff, ruff. Short-dog for...have a good night.

A beautiful day in the Timber City, with a high in the upper 60's......The Iowa DOT announced today that construction on the 4-lane Highway 61 from the South edge of Maquoketa through the North edge of the city will resume this week. Lots of grading to be done before concrete is poured. During the winter, the new Southbound bridge over the Maquoketa River was built and is nearing completion. The new highway will be completed through town by this fall. I'll keep you posted on the construction progress.......Thanks to Shawn Meyer, Maquoketa MCHS Grad, for being a regular checking this report. Shawn is a cable TV executive in the Chicago area......Virginia Wolf died yesterday at a Dubuque hospital and services will be Friday. Wolf, Jr. of Maquoketa is a well-known Maquoketa High School teacher and another son, Mark, lives in California. I'm not sure if he is still in the movie business or not......City Council meeting tonight and I'll have something on it tomorrow. My 61 Drive-In Theatre opens Friday night. More on that later. And that does it for today.

The State of Illinois will build a new State Prison on the Depot grounds. The 98-million facility will open in the year 2000 and will create 465 permanent jobs. And, one of his talented freshman players, Ricky Davis, announced yesterday that he would like to turn PRO. He will hope for a lst round draft pick, and if he doesn't get drafted, will be back at Iowa this Fall.....Daylight savings time starts this Sunday. Turn your clock ahead one hour when you go to bed Saturday night. Which means, you loose an hour of sleep this week. Have a nice weekend.

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31 AND APRIL 1, 1998

Lots of weather happenings the past couple days. Monday night, the first Tornado Warning in Maquoketa. One was sited East of town but did no damage. And, we have had around 3 inches of rain the past couple days, causing the Maquoketa River to go over its banks. Nothing serious. Tomorrow, hopefully no more rain and some better weather, for the lst day of KMAQ'S FIRST ANNUAL SENIOR FAIR at the fairgrounds......We had our first St.Louis Cardinals game of the season yesterday afternoon and the Cards beat the LA Dodgers, 6 to 0, and Mark McGuire hit a grand-slam home run. So, baseball on KMAQ is off to a good start. No game today but the Cardinals play again tomorrow afternoon.......Longtime Maquoketa banker Roger Stewart retires this week after being with the Maquoketa State Bank as a loan officer for over 30 years.
