TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1998

A misty, damp day in Maquoketa......RAGBRAI, the Des Moines Register's famous bike-across Iowa will end up again this year, in Jackson County. The final night of the weeklong trek will be spent in Monticello and then the final day, a Saturday, will be from Monticello, through Jackson County to Sabula where it ends at the Mississippi River. Because Sabula is a small town, for the first time ever, an Illinois town, Savanna, will play a part in the final leg of the event. Bicycle riders will according to tradition, dip their front tire in the Mississippi at Sabula and then many will celebrate in both Sabula and Savanna before heading back home. Many will leave for home that night but many also will spend the night and return to their home on Sunday. So, it will be another big event for Jackson County this summer. The exact route and the dates will be announced very soon. Speculation is that most of the trip through Jackson County will be on County Road E-l7, which runs East-West a few miles North of Maquoketa and goes through Andrew. As I hear more about RAGBRAI, I'll let you know.......This afternoon, a couple miles East of Andrew, a man was arrested for threatening his girlfriend and her children wth a gun. Many law enforcement vehecles rushed to the scene, and before they arrived, he left the house and was arrested a short time later nearby by Jackson County Deputy Bill Deppe. He was arrested without incident and is in custody awaiting his initial court appearance. No other details are available this time. This could have been a serious situation, but fortunately is ended quickly with no one getting hurt. The man arrested was 39-year-old Steven J. Kramer of 297th Avenue, rural Andrew. The girlfriend's name was not announced......Maquoketa City Council members last night at a meeting directed the City Manager to sharpen his pencil and keep the Maquoketa TaxRate the same as this year....to ramain at $9.50 per assessed valuation instead of going to $9.60 as had been proposed at last week's Council Meeting. Donations to Mount Hope Cemetery, The Women's Resouce Center, The Senior Center, the Jackson County Economic Development Commission and others.....Connie Willey, age 50, of near Peoria,Illinois, died Monday at a Peoria hospital after a long battle with cancer. Hi again...and again, a mainly cloudy day in the 30's...no complaints....Because I'm really busy with the Farm and Home Show, this will be short.......Today, the 2nd of the two days for the show at the fairgrounds, another good attendance. Had a big turn-out at noon to watch Joanna Lund cook up a "pie" that anyone can eat....all her dishes won't hurt you, so you can have dessert every day...one of her famous sayings. She started her weight loss 7 years ago...unknown then...wrote a book and started her business Healthy Exchanges...and she's a millionaire plus. Has her International Headquarters, including a restaurant, in the Industrial Park at DeWitt and is one of the most popular clients on the QVC Shopping Network which has made her famous throughout the contry. We're all pretty proud of her and the fact that she is putting DeWitt on the map.......Red Henton entertained this afternoon. Red, in his mid 70's still carries a tune well and is very popular. He does it alone these days as wife Bernice isn't up to helping like in the past. But, Red does very little in the way of entertaining...just for special events. KMAQ and Red have been friends since 1958 when KMAQ went on the air and Red and his gang had a daily radio show on KMAQ, sponsored by Schmidt Beer and distributed by Kirchoff Distribution Company in Maquoketa. On the show with Red was his brother, the late Ray Shields and at the time, KMAQ's Chief Engineer and Chief morning announcer. Ray's wife still lives in Mountain Home, Arkansas, as does his son Buddy. I'm not sure if Schmidt Beer is around yet, I'm not much of a beer drinker anymore, but I do know that Kirchoff Distributing Company is still in business with main office in Dubuque and is the Budweiser Distributor for this area and is run by a grandson or two of the founder, Ed Kirchoff, who died back in the 80's when he was up in his 90's......Tonight we have Square Dancing at the Farm & Home Show and we bring it to an end at 8. Lots of work, but fun too..putting it on each year. And helps pay the the bills here at the station......Well...lets end it here for today.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1998

Hi. A cloudy day in the 30's........First day of KMAQ FARM & HOME SHOW has been a big success. Had almost a packed house over the noon hour for lunch and the Friends Of Ag Awards sponsored by the Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. Joe and Shelley Heinrich of rural Maquoketa were named "Farmers of the Year"......Dale Beach, an employee for many years at Timber City Feed and Seed was named the Agri-Industry Friend of Agriculture and Scott Gent, was named the Public Service Friend of Agriculture......Wayne Walker, age 84, of Maquoketa, formerly of Monmouth, Iowa, died Monday at his home. He is survived by a son Brent in Belvidere, Illinois....Sorry, for the short report, but I have to get back out to the fairgrounds to close-out today's KMAQ show there. Talk to you tomorrow.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1998

Cloudy most of today, high 33.......Maquoketa wrestlers defeated Camanche here in town last night, 67 to 0. Camanche forfeited 7 matches. Doc Paul Koob and I broadcast the meet. Paul thinks we will have 3 to 5 Cardinals going to the State Wrestling meet this year. Sure hope he's right.......The Iowa Hawkeyes broke a 4 game loosing streak tonight, defeating the Badgers by 3 points in their new arena at Madison......I went to the final meeting of the Maquoketa Lions Club tonight at the Decker Hotel. Seven of us attened the last meeting of the 61-year-old Club that was down to only a dozen members, with no prospects for a brighter future. Money left in Treasury will be given to the Maquoketa Area Foundation with directions that it be used for helping anyone in need that will need assistance in purchasing new eye glasses. President Roy Frandsen was present for the final meeting as was former Presidents Brent Rathje, Don Miller and myself...also Howard Gisel and H.B. Patel. H. B.....like myselft, has been a member for around 35 years. It was a sad night for us and Maquoketa. It seemed it was just about impossible to get anyone to join an evening "service club"...too many other things to do at night. I personally believe some neighboring club will try to start up a new Lions Club in Maquoketa within 5 years. I hope so. Hopefully, all that is needed in this town is a couple years rest form Lions. Maquoketa is too large of a community not to have a Lions Club ever again. Meanwhile, the records, banner, flag, etc. will be put in storage in the KMAQ downstairs storeroom....BIG DAY FOR US AT KMAQ TOMOROW...THE FIRST DAY OF THE 2-DAY FARM AND HOME SHOW at the Fairgrounds. So, time to call it a day.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1998

Another Spring-like day in Maqoketa.......Two juviniles from Illinois face numerous charges after a high-speed chase late last night. It all started about 11:30 last night North of Maquoketa. State Trooper Fred Herman tried to stop the 2 for speeding 69 MPH in a 55MPH zone. The truck wouldn't stop and preceded South towards Maquoketa at speeds up to 110 MPH. Deputy Sheriff Al Barker began pursuit just North of town. The truck next entered Platt Street and proceeded through Maquoketa. Sheriff Deputy Terry Roling blocked highway 64 East of Maquoketa, but the truck went around. The truck then continued Eastbound and through Preston. Two Clinton County Deputies were stationed at Miles, Iowa. The pickup turned onto Perry Street in Miles and wentEast out of Miles and went about 4 miles at speeds up to 70 MPH....then went airborne through an intersection and ended up in a ditch. The two were taken to a Clinton hospital for minor injuries. The truck was stolen and a total loss. It was a 96 Chevy pickup owned by a Dakota, Illinois couple. The driver was l4 and his passenger l5. Imagine a 14 year-old being able to drive for so long at that high speed. Turns out they had stolen another truck earlier and it ran out of gas and they they stole the 2nd one which ended up in the Jackson County ditch. Some real Sunday night excitement for local law enforcement authorities. My son Dave shot a Vhs video of it speeding through town. He heard about it on his scanner at his office on West Platt and so he grabbed his video camera and got the truck going through town on highway 64. The video was shown today on channell 7 in Waterloo......The new wood awning, or porch.....not sure what it should be called......arrived this afternoon and was put in place at the entrance to the Decker Hotel. It was made from photos of the original by Larry McDevitt of Maquoketa. Larry did a great job and it really looks nice. The Decker front of building now looks exactly like it did when opened in 1876.......Maquoketa girls play tonight here in town against Dyersville. We will have it on KMAQ-FM with Bob Warner at the mike......Well..better get home for dinner. Stop by again tomorrow.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1998

A rainy day in Maquoketata......Maquoketa wrestlers won the Durant meet yesterday........Iowa lost the 4th game in a row today at Iowa City. In a bad slump and already people are starting to talk about a new coach. Never fails......I am doing this at home and don't have access to the newsroom, so I have nothing to report from newsroom today.....Is there anything you would like included on this report that I am not including now? In other words, any suggestions for improving this?......I don't like it when I have little to report, but let's face it, there are days when very little happens, especially weekends....so..with that said....I'll sign-off with the wish that your week ahead will be a good one.
