Sunshine and 42 in Maquoketa, like a Spring day.......Maquoketa boys won big last night against Western Dubuque, here in town....the foreign exchange student scored 30 points. He's only 5-ll but quite a player.....Eric Juergens, the Maquoketa wrestler who wrestles at 118 for the Iowa Hawkeyes (first of 4 years eligibility) is ranked 8th in the Nation.......The 32 year-old DeWitt man that died in a car fire Thursday morning was intoxicated and died from smoke inhalation. No foul play expected......Anytime the Jackson County jail has openings, other counties will play $50 a night to keep their inmates. Maquoketa can accomodate around 10 total. Jackson County has been averaging around $6,000 a month lately. Good extra income for the County. By the way, Jackson County has a nice County surplus....is in good financial shape. A few years ago, they did not have that sitution. A good turn around by the County Supervisors.......Randy Ferguson, who has been the Manager of the Jack and Jill Store for quite a few years has resigned and will be the Plant Manager for Wood Products, located in the Industrial Park. Better hours I'm sure. The Jack and Jill Store is open 24 hours and I know Randy had spent long hours on the job. The store is owned by a man in Tipton, who has Tipton's only super market and a couple others, including Maquoketa......Wood Products is a growing industry and is planning to build an addition to their plant.......Maquoketa Cub Scouts still have a Pinewood Derby. Competition for this year was held last Sunday and some of the winners were: Nick Schroeder....Brett Mitchell....Conner Bybee...Jeremy Brandt...Clayton Shady and Colin Gisel. Willis Bramer and Alvin Barton were the judges....Heard this week that Roy Ward purchased the former A-l TV and Waka Restaurant Building on West Platt in Maquoketa. His brothers are Deputy Dick Ward and welder Larry Ward both in Maquoketa. I don't know Roy, been living out of State I guess and I'm not sure what he will do with building but someone said he would be selling some used merchandise in it. So, will have to waite for more information. In any case, it will be nice to have something back into those two empty storefronts again. The restaurant went out of business and A-l TV, owned still by Arnold Koranda, is located across the hight in a smaller location on South Jones, in the building that for many years was the location for the State Liquor Store and the ASCS office. Also in the building, next to A-l, is Take Two Video. Arnold is also still a part-time policeman. His son is fulltime policeman Brad Koranda, GOOD cop! .......Maquoketa has one other TV-Appliance Store...MAYBERRY'S in downtown Maquoketa, near the Library. Oldtimers will remember when that area was the home of Bob The Florist.....Well...so much for a Saturday report. Not sure if there will be anything for tomorrow, but do check in to see. I havn't missed many days this month. See you NEXT MONTH in any case. The SHORT month.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 1998

Cloudy and cool, hi today 33. Warmer tomorrow.......It will be early next week before the preliminary autopsy results are available regarding the death early Thursday of 32-year-old James J.R. Spain of DeWitt. See yesterday's report on his death in car fire. The State Fire Marshall is also expected to be in DeWitt next Tuesday to conduct his investigation. Authorities are not saying at this time if foul play was involved......Maquoketa girls won easily over Western Dubuque last night and the Maquoketa boys beat both DeWitt and Clinton in a double-dual meet last night in Clinton...in fact, they won over both opponent schools by a big margine. They wrestle in another dual tomorrow at Durant. Maquoketa boys host Western Dubuque tonight...North Main Street looks a little different tonight, across from KMAQ. They took down and hauled away the Decker House Inn sidewalk sign that has been up there for nearly half a century. And soon, a new covered entryway will be attached to the building that will cover the front stairs and will include the Decker Hotel sign. The original hotel had the over-hang so this will be still another way Troy and Raeann Thede are for them to bring the Hotel up to its original look. It should look good and further endance business at the popular hotel and restaurant. Troy and Raeann have done "wonders"with the old building during the 5-6 years they have owned it. Maquoketa should and is thankful that the young couple came along to save this historic hotel buildt in 1876. My morning coffee group meets there.....best coffee bunch in town. All accurate gossip discussed there. Great ideas and suggestions every morning. Join us when you visit our town next time. A dollar a cup and that includes a seocnd or third refill and sometimes, a sweet roll thrown in at no exrtra charge...day-old maybe, but still good with hot coffee....and that will have to do it for another day. Have a good weekend.

Snow shovelin' times a comin again. 3 to 6 inches in tonight's forecast.....Maquoketa City Council met last night and held a better than 2-hour meeting. I watched much of it on TV. City council meetings are televised on the local-access channel 22 in Maquoketa. Forrest Buffington appeared before the Council. He is manager of the local Maquoketa Municipal Electric Company. Because the utility is doing so well, electric rates in Maquokea will be lowered in l998. Maquoketa is fortunate to have a local utility. We have had one since the early l900's, but for many years, we had two services for Maquoketa, the local plant and Iowa Electric. But, a few years back, Maquoketa bought out IES and now, having the full town to service, for the first time in a long time, the local plant is not just doing okay, but is instead, doing very well......Also at the meeting last night, lots of discussion on the new citi-county bridge to be buildt North of the city to replace the old bridge, that carries traffic on old highway 61. Old bridge is on restricted load limit and needs to be replaced. New bridge is still a couple years away and will be good for Maquoketa when replaced......The city bought a little house on Summitt Street, next to the entrance to the 5th Ward Park. It is a house that the city really needed to own and I'm glad they decided to buy it for less than $20,000. Not sure how long before it will be torn down, but when it is, there will be a much better view of park from Summitt and there will be additional much-needed parking for park. It has a ball diamond and in the summer, there are lots of cars that have no close-in place to park......Funeral services are pending here in Maquoketa for 87-year-old Ralph Oestern of Maquoketa who died today at his home. Survivors include his wife Mildred......Maquoketa girls play at DeWitt tonight. Game will be broadcast on KMAQ tonight. Should be a good game....Well, I'm off to a Lions Club meeting, so will close. Don't forget, Girl Scout Cookies go on sale Friday. $3 a box. Been selling those good cookies since 1934. Thin Mints the most popular. 25% of cookies sold are the mints. Did you know Girl Scouts were organized back in 1912. That year was also the year of a historic event that you should all be aware of. If you know what I'm speaking of, give your reply to everyone on the KMAQ Guest Book. Have a good night. Oh yes, thanks to Brenda and Doug for their Guestbook signing. Brenda's mom Pat works here at KMAQ and Brenda worked for me as a concession girl at the theatre quite a few years ago. For many years, she has been in the airline business in the great Northwest. Her husband also in same field. See you tomorrow on the WEB.

Nice day in Iowa......Bad weekend for Jason Hamilton of Wheatland, Iowa. Someone slashed all 4 tires on his pickup truck, a loss of $200. Can you believe they still do this sort of thing in Iowwa??? I could have a story EVERY DAY about someone hitting a deer in the KMAQ area. Saturday afternoon, Bill Gunderson of Illinois was traveling just East of Preston and hit 2. Its a real problem and getting worse. Anytime of the year. Body shops havve no complaints though......Maquoketa firemen had their annual dinner-dance Saturday night. Two firemen received a 10-year award. Bob Lane, Jr. has been a firemen for 10 years and Mark Crouch the same, but Mark also now has retired from the department. By the way, Bob Lane's dad is also still a firmen, been one as long as I can remember. They also presented outgoing chief Harold Lubben with a plaque. Mark Beck is new Fire Chief. Party was held at Fife's......In sports...Iowa won over Minnesota Sunday afternoon. Over the weekend, Eric Juergen, who went undefeated at MCHS his four years, is now a Freshman wrestler, and starter for the Iowa Hawkeyes and this weekend won 4 out of 4 matches, including 2 over wrestlers ranked higher than him. That'll do it for today.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 1998

THE SUN IS SHINING IN MAQUOKETA. BEEN AWHILE. Howdy. Not much new in the shooting at Oxford Junction. Body found in the school bus body the father and son were living in. The 17 year old son, reportedly turning l8 today, is Nathan Watson. DCI investigators and Jones County Sheriff's officials have reportedly questioned Watson. No arrests have been made and we have been told that the boy has been turned-over to the custody of his mother........The Maquoketa boys basketball team has a new starter. He is a foreign exchange student from Australia and is good. Could not play for first 90 days in America, but last night with time up, he played nearly entire game locally against Cascade. He did a good job, but Maquoketa lost by 12 pounds. Score at the end of the 3rd Quarter had Cardinals trailing by only 2 points however. The 4th period was all Cascade. They are a Class 2A rated team and have only l loss, so we knew the Cardinals would have their work cut out for them. Tonight Maquoketa plays non-conference game at Vinton. Many of you will rememer that Vinton was in the old WaMaC Conference with Maquoketa and the Vinton trip was always the longest and most dreaded trip. I'll keep you posted on the foreign exchange player......Allen Traverse and Emily Boland are parents of a girl born yesterday here in Maquoketa Sun is still shining as I sign off for today. Take it easy on Sunday. Don't forget, if you have any questions about Maquoketa, ask them thru e-mail to me and I'll try and get the answers and report back on this Worldwide Report. Or, ask your question on the Guest Book age. Or give me a call. My hotline, that only I answer, is 1-319-652-6261. My fax number is 1-319-652-6210......Check also, the new Weather Button on the KMAQ WEB PAGE. Go to it anytime 24 hours a day and the Maquoketa forecast will be there, including current conditions and the 5-day forecast. Take care. I may have a Sunday report.

A MURDER IN JONES COUNTY> Jones County got a 911 call around 4 this morning to a location in Oxford Junction. The Sheriff's Department said to a BUS. Apparently a man and his son were living in a bus. When deputies arrived, they discovered the body of Craig "Rocky" Donald Chase, age 42, dead from a gunshot wound. Apparently the son is a suspect. No other details were announced. The investigation continues by the Jones County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa DCI.......At the CountySupervisors meeting this week in Maquoketa, approval was given to plans to remodel the Migistrate's Court and Small Claims area of the Courthouse, at a cost of $3,000 with work to be do;ne by Jim Wirth Construction. I think his slogan is,"If its worth doing, let Wirth do it"...or soemthing like that. Jim does good work. The project will be completed in the next few weeks and includes relocating a door and moving the counter. Also, Superviors heard the report for December on the Jail, from Jerry Manning, head jailer. He reported that 672 meals were served in December and that an average of 8 inmates a day enjoyed their stay in the detentention center. The budget planning has begun by Superviors Dave Kendall, JC Engel and Jack Willey.......Two KMAQ part-time announcers were in the news today. After closing up KMAQ at l0 last night, Kevin Anderson, age 16, one of our student announcers asked part-time announcer Ken Goodenow if he could drive Ken's car, which Ken has for sale. Kevin is looking to buy a car. Well, Kevin, with Ken at his side, headed West on Quarry, lost control, jumped the curb, and struck a fire hydrant and came to a stop. Kevin was charged with failure to maintain control. Damage to the 93-model car was estimated at $2,000 and damage to the hydrant not known. There, even if you work for KMAQ, you can't keep things off the air or off the Web site. Those two guys will be talking about the mishap for a few days. I din't givve Ken's age, but believe it is 19 or 20. He is out of school and works at Rosenberg Auto in addditon to working here at KMAQ. He started as a student announcer when a Sophomore in high school. The car, by the way, is still driveable......The Maquoketa State Bank has pledged $20,000 a year for 5 years to the Auditorium Fund here in Maquoketa. They earlier had given $10,000 and so their total donation, if the project goes to completion, will be $110,000. And, you'll recall that one of the pricipal owners of the bank, Ed Tubbs, pledged, along with his wife Grace, a half-million dollars. About one and a third million has been pleged to the 3.9 million project to build a 600 seat auditorium up by and connected to a corner of the high school. A bond issue election to raise the balance for the project is expected to be set for sometime later this year......Maquoketa wrestlers hosted a double-dual meet last night with Anamoso and Benton Comunity and whipped both teams handily. Both Anamosa and Benton were able to get just 2 wins each against the Cardinals. Maquoketa hosts an event tomorrow again. And tonight the Cardinal boys host Cascade in boys basketball...should be a good game. We'll broadcast it on FM tonight. Check back tomorrow. Have a good weekend. Oh yes, thanks to my neighbor on Jones Avenue for the nice guestbook comments on KMAQ Web Page and also to guestbook entry from a regular Website looker in beautiful, warm California, the land of smog and lots of cars. Nice to visit, but nothing like God's Country....Iowa. So long.

Had l0 above for overnight low........Maquoketa City Council members met for 3 hours last night for a goal setting session. They started with 47 proposals and narrowed the list to eight projects to be completed or finished in 1998. Instituting a building code for Maquoketa has been ranked at the top of the list. Maquoketa currently doesn't have one although discussions have been going on for several years. The oher 7 goals in order are:.....examining the problems at the city's wastewater treatment plant.....adding sidewalks to areas of town where there are none......figuring out what to do with the old swimming pool.....remodeling restrooms at the city ball park.....look at building a corporate business park.....assist developers with housing projects....and set up a city evaluation and personnel policy for city employees. .....In basketball last night, the Maquoketa boys, coached by Bill Flemming, traveled to Anamosa and won the game by 2 points.....Iowa plays Ohio State tonight. Iowa ranked and having a good year. Cheer for the Hawks tonight and check back here tomorrow. You folks down south...what a shame....you can't go out and shovel snow today. Greetings on cold January day, with no sunshine in Maquoketa, but a promise of some tomorrow, says the weather bureau. ITS A GREAT DAY....ITS DENNIS AND NANCY VOY'S 34TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. How about that1 She sometimes checks the Daily Report, now that I have the WEB-TV at home. So, just in case she does, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY HONEY! Thanks for the nice card. I sent her some flowers and we are going out to eat tonight. We were married at First Lutheran Church here in Maquoketa while I was home on leave from the US Army. Our honeymoon was our trip back to Fort Hood, Texas. Yup...Christy joined us exactly 9 months later.....Not news locally, a few fender benders and some court cases. No deaths or births......In sports, the Cardinal Boys beat Monticello here Friday night and the Maquoketa girls defeated Monti there Friday night. Then Saturday night, the girls defeated Dyersville there. And, the wrestlers were in a l5-team tournament in Illinois Saturday and took 3rd place, so it was a good weekend for Maquoketa Cardinal sports.....And good weekend too for the Green Bay Packer fans like me. Of course, they'll win the Super Bowl again.....Thanks to Ace Morris for the KMAQ Guestbook visit last week. I need to write your folks soon, but there hasn't been a lot of news for them. His folks are Morrie and Dorothy and they are down south visiting Leon and daughter Cheryl. Maquoketa does pretty good in "blood doning" but could do better. Coming to town the 23rd? GIVE BLOOD1 And so much for today.

Another COLD day in Maquoketa. But, sun is shining......In City business, Maquoketa is again billing water/sewer customers from City Hall. For several years, billing was done by Peoples Gas and we got our gas bill land water/sewer bill both in same envelope. Peoples decided not to do it anymore, a new computer and employee will not do it agian at City Hall. Years ago, that was a small bill, but not anymore. My personal home bill was $59.37 for water and sewer. Also, in City affairs, the Mayor earlier this week appointed some members to City volunteer commissions. Dave Knoebel, former Councilman, to the Cable Commission. Brad Koranda, a City Policeman, to the Zoning Board of Adjustment, Deb Lane and Jay Kahn to the city Parks & Recreation Commission and Marilyn Osterhaus and Pastor Belva Duncan to the Public Housing Authority.......Maquoketa's US Congressman is Republican Jim Nustle of Manchester and his is these days continuing his tradition of holding town meetings in every County of his District. Its a cold, windy day in Maquoketa and tonight, we are looking for lows around 0 to 5 above. Entire weekend looks wintery......Maquoketa has a new Fire Chief. Mark Beck, who has been deputy cheif, was elected Chief of the Volunteer Department last night. He succeeds Harold Lubben who decided not to see re-electiion. Lubben has been Chief for 6 years. He succeeded longtime Chief Jim Frank at that time. Harold also just recently retired as the Jackson County Assessor. Mark Beck is the fulltime director of the Jackson County Sanitary Disposal Agency. Beck said he hopes to raise active membership in the fire department from 25 to hopefully 35. He said Harold Lubben will continue on as a fireman. Mark is son of Claude and Nadine Beck and is married to the former Kendra Fagerland. He and his family, live up the street from me on North Jones. I've known Mark since he was just a kid. His dad worked for KMAQ when Mark was growing up. He will be a good Fire Chief......Jake Bickford and I went for a coke yesterday to Fife's Bar and Grill on East Platt Street. Been that name for a year or so and before that, the building was the home of the Eagles Club and before that, it was OK Furniture Store. Fife's is owned by Brian Konrardy of Maquoketa. Jake has been there before but it was my first visit. It is basically a young persons bar. Recently Brian opened up the ceiling to the upstairs and so the two floors have an open connection now which should be popualer. Downstairs is a bar and dance area and upstairs is the game room and another small bar. Nice place for the younger set. Brian will be adding more booths and start serving food in February. Well..busy day again..and I need to move on to soemthing else. Have a good weekend.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1998

Dry and cold today.....Had my first Rotary Club meeting of the year today at the Flapjack Restaurant. Good turnout and we had a program on the new auditorium fund drive, given by Pastor Gerald Gjerde, a member of the Auditorium Commmittee. So far, about l.2 million has been pledged, including the 500-thousand pledge by Grace and Tubbs. The new auditorium, 600 seat, is proposed to bbe added attached to the northeast corner of the high school. When all pledges are in, it is the intent to have a bond issue for the money short of the total project cost, which is 3.9 million. Gjerde today said that there will probably be a bond issue election set by the Maquoketa Community School Board for sometime this year. There are many people for it and just as many against. Those opposed are against taxex going up to pay for some of its cost, plus upkeep expenses after it is open. I'll keep you posted. If you would like to donate a million, they might consider naming it after you. Send you check to me and I'll forward it to the right peoople.....It is just after 5 and fire trucks just rushed past KMAQ going to a car fire on North Main Street......In sports, the Maquoketa girls won over Anamosa last night here in Maquoketa, by a good margin. But, the Maquoketa wrestlers, missing a couple key members of team, lost to Pleasant Valley's good squad, on their gym floor.....Thanks Don Sanger in Port Orchard, Washington, for your guest page comments on the KMAQ WEB SITE. Glad you like it and hope you'll continue to check us out when you can. And..was glad to hear also that Sis, most call her Mo, and husband Dewsty in Crystal Lake, Minnesota are daily report readers. Crystal is near Minneapolis I guess and Mo's mom works for me here at KMAQ. Dottie Bayless haas been on sales team here for over 20 years. Started when Mo...Maureen, was just a cute little girl. Colder weather and maybe snow too, is in the forecast for this weekend, but that is still a ways off. Bad weather for ski places, like the two big ones we have in our area, at Galena and Dubuque. Maquoketa decided this year to make an ice-rink in the First Ward Park. Dug out the large area, lined it, and now waiting for some cold weather to make the ice......Fire department today called toa report of a kitchen stove fire, but turned out to be an overheated furnace motor that caused light smoke at the Mobile Home of Red and Ruth Mohr.....No new babies, no deaths....Iowa won again Saturday night over Northwestern. HAPPPY NEW YEAR. THIS REPORT IS BEING DONE AT MY HOME INSTEAD OF AT MY OFFICE. I'M DOING IT FROM MY RECLINER CHAIR IN FACT, WITH A WIRELESS KEYBOARD THAT I GOT WITH MY NEW WEB TV. THE WEB TV ALLOWS ONE TO SURF THE WEB ON A REGULAR TV SET. YOU HAVE TO USE THE TELEPHONE HERE AT HOME TOO. WORKS GREAT. COST OF WEB TV IS AROUND $200 AND THE MONTHLY FEE IS $10. IT IS A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE E-MAIL AND USE OF INTERNET WITHOUT HAVING TO BUY A COMPUTER. I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED, THE WIRELESS KEYBOARD WAS $80. YOU DON'T NEED A KEYBOARD, AS THE REMOTE CONTROL ALLOWS ONE TO TYPE MESSAGES, BUT IT TAKES MUCH LONGER WITH IT......SO MUCH FOR THAT,IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, LET ME KNOW THROUGH E-MAIL.....NICE DAY TODAY IN IOWA...SUNSHINE AND AROUND 40. SON DAVE AND I VISITED THE PRESIDENT RIVERBOAT CASINO IN DAVENPORT AND WAS IT BUSY. YES, I LOST SOME MONEY. BUT I ALSO WIN OCCASSIONALLY....SINCE I'M NOT AT THE STATION,I CAN'T CHECK IN THE NEWSROOM TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING WORTH MENTIONING ON THE NEWS DESK. NO SCHOOL YET TOMORROW, SO IT WON'T BE BACK TO NORMAL UNTIL MONDAY. MANY COLLEGE KIDS WILL STILL BE AROUND FOR THE WEEKEND. MONDAY, IT STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN...ANOTHER WORK YEAR AND AT KMAQ, WE HAVE TO MAKE PLANS TO GET OUR RADIO BINGO BACK ON THE AIR AND ALSO GET READY FOR THE KMAQ WINTER FARM AND HOME SHOW THE FIRST WEEK IN FEBRUARY. WELL, GUESS I'LL CLOSE FOR TODAY. THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.
