Jack Willey was Chairman in 1997 and the 3rd Supervisor, J.C. Engle of Maquoketa will be Vice-Chairman this coming year. Doctor Paul Koob of Maquoketa was re-appointed County Medical Examiner....Does Maquoketa "party" on New Year's Eve?? Yes, but I don't think like in years past. FIFE'S has a band tonight and The PUB at the Decker has "live" music, and I suppose there will be music and dance
also at the Eagles Club and another popular place is Timber Lanes. Lots of dining out. I talked to the owner of the Decker Hotel Restaurant and he said he had lots of reservations for tonight. The theatre has a good night on New Year's Eve...and lots of people rent movies for the evening. The weather will be cold, but good for tonight. Today's high was only in the upper teens but it is supposed to be nice tomorrow in our area. We should be in the mid to upper 30's, maybe reach 40. Well...that will do it for today and for 1997. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Merry Christmas! We didn't get as much snow as they predicted. Stopped snowing around 10 last night, after at lease a couple inches had fallen. So, we had a White Christmas and there wasn't a lot of snow to shovel this morning. But, it was hard to get off the driveway, frozen a bit, so my snow blower couldn't get down like you want. Thank goodness for snow blowers.....No sunshine today. I have no air shift today but came down with my son Dave to hook up a new computer that we start using for logs and billing January lst. The company we had been with for many years for software is going out of business Decemberf 31st, so we had to go with a new company and their logging and billing program requires IBM compat so our Mac will have to be used for soemting else. This now means that Pat Weirup, our computer person for logs and billilng will have to enter lots of new data in the next couple weeks and get used to using a new software program and new computer. She'll have no problem, but maybe a
little frustration now and then. Pat has been with KMAQ for over 20 years. I kid her that she still has nearly 20 left on her contract. Anyway, the computer is running and I'll let you know later how the switchover is going.......I have a farm show to tape for tomorrow morning and I'll be off for home and a Christmas dinner at 4 and opening gifts after. Last night, we were at my daughter's home, Christy and Charlie, and watched grandkids Sara and Nate open their gifts. Santa treated them well. We also attended the ll PM service last night at the First Lutheran Church. Nice service, and full house. It was the 3rd of 3 Christmas Eve services at First Lutheran. They, like many churches these days, do not have a Christmas Day service. First Lutheran has 2 Pastors, Gerald Gjerde and Pam Schroeder. Pastor Gerald has been here for nearly 15 years, but Pam only about 2. The retired long-time Pastor, Harold Kumpf, now in his early 80's, just moved into a new home out around the golf course. He and
wife Eleanor are visit son and family for Christmas in Colorado.......Couple births, Joe and Tara Heuer of Maquoketa had a boy Monday at local hospital and Brad and Sue Clark of West Des Moines had a girl born Christmas eve in Des Moines. Nasty day in Iowa. Freezing drizzle this morning caused Maquoketa schools not to open today and caused icy driving condition until mid morning. Now, late this afternoon, more drizzle.....Maquoketa boys and girls basketball games scheduled for tonight were also postponed. The teachers group last week had proposed a 2.7 increase and today the school board proposed a 1.9% increase and this means the two are only $150 apart on the base salary. No meeting-time for negotiations to begin was set, but the negotitions aren't expected to last long because of closeness of both

And snow possible Wednesday......Dennis Ihrig of rural Maquoketa stopped across street from Post Office with his pickup, went into post office and while there, his truck took off by itself Friday afternoon. No charges listed on the Maquoketa police report. I did same thing once, in front of Newspaper office (ran in for a paper) and my car took off. Struck a sign and did damage also to car, but not major.......Maquoketa boys lost by 5 points at Western Dubuque last nigth and Maquoketa girls defeated Western Dubuque here in town last night by about 10 points. HELLO. Cloudy this morning, sunny this afternoon, and the high today was 44. Sunny and colder tomorrow with a high in mid 30's. Snow is possible Tuesday...and no word yet on if we will have fresh snow for a White Christmas in Maquoketa. There is still some on the ground though from last snowfall.....The Mquoketa CommunitySchool District teachers this week asked for a 2.7 percent increase in their pay scale for next year. The current base for a first year teacher is $20,700. Maquoketa has 140 full and part-time certified teachers. The minister, Jim Lucey, is in charge. The church with about 5 families, meets at the Brock Building on North Main Street and that is also where the dinner will be. The Brock building was used for many years for the former Brock Lumber Company. Now that large building is being rented out for many local events by owners Glen and Leona Brock. They also have quite a few buildings on the property used for winter storage of boats and campers. Brock Flower and Greenhouse is also at that location in a large building and that building and business is owned by Glen's son, Cary Brock. Cary is a big "beanee baby" dealer
and he has 3 of the new purple Princes Diana Beany Baby which are going for big dollars these days. Cary has decided to sell all 3 on KMAQ's JUST TALK SHOW nest Tuesday morning and give the proceeds to the Sunshine Preschool, The Maquoketa Community Cupboard and the New Auditorium Drive. Yes..I'll start again by saying, another beautiful day in Maquoketa...sunny, high around 40.....In Sports, the Maquoketa Boys basketball team beat Camanche last night here in town but the Maquoketa girls lost to Camanche, there. And at schoolboard meeting this week, Jenifer(Koob) Gavin resigned as Maquoketa Girls Varsity volleyball coach. Still another beautiful day in Maquoketa...sunny and in 40's.
......At speicial school board meeting in Maquoketa last night, it was decided by a 3 to 2 vote to leave Briggs and Cardinal elementary schools function as they have for many years, instead of restructuring next year. A study has been going on for 20 months. The plan that was defeated was to pre-kindergarden thru 2nd grade in one facility and 3rd grade thru 5th in other. It was a controversial idea.....My KFC restaurant on highway 61 north was broken into early this morning. The north door of the dining room was pried open, but as far as we know, nothing was taken. Investigation continues by the Maquoketa Police Department...Jake Bickford was in today to record a new Christmas spot for his men's store, called Bill Moler's......The tag at the end of spot says, our 39th year. It is Jackson County's only men's clothing store. Bill Moler opened it in 1958 and Jake begain working at the store in 1959. He bought the store in the 80
s. Bill is retired and spends some time in Florida. Jake's wife still teaches and Jake and Judy have 3 married children. One daughter lives in Omaha, another in Iowa City and his son in Indianna. He has either 2 or 3 grandkids. Jake is still an avid Hawkeye fan, still like to play golf a couple times a week and also bowls once a week with a pretty good average. Maquoketa is lucky to still have a nice men's store. At one time Maquoketa and many towns our size, had 3 or 4 men's stores, but now most Iowa counties, like Jackson, are lucky to have one. We still have one shoe store left in Jackson County (none in Maquoketa) and it may close next year, according to rumor.......well, so much for today. Tomorrow I'll let you know how the girls and boys did against Camanche tonight. Don't forget, it is very EASY to use the KMAQ Guestbook to leave a message and Christmas greeting to over 250 Maquoketa homes on the Internet. Now that you have finished reading today's Daily Report, go on over the the
guestbook and sign-in.

Another beautiful sunny day in Maquoketa.......Brian Koncel was found guilty this afternoon of both first degree murder and first degree kidnapping....the same verdict his brother received earlier this fall. Both for killing Marty Budde of Bellevue earlier this year. Mark Lawson, Brian Koncel's attorney, said there would be an appeal. The virdict, for both brothers, means life in prison with no chance for parole....short report today, as I'm running way behind schedule. Brian, the younger of the 2 brothers, claims his brother did the killing. His brother Joe was tried earlier this fall and has already been found guility. The trial is expected to go to the jury sometime late tomorrow and a verdict is expected late tomorow or Tuesday........In sports, this past week, Iowa lost its first game of the season to Iowa State but then yesterday defeated Drake by l point. The Maquoketa girls lost their first game of the
season to DeWitt here in town Friday night, but the boys beat DeWitt Friday night at DeWitt. So both teams now have just one loss. Yesterday, the Maquoketa Wrestlers won their own sponsored Dwight Zimmerman Tournament yesterday at the MCHS gym. So, season is very young yet, but looks like it could be a good season for MCHS girls and boys basketball and boys wrestling........Will have to make this short as I am running my theatre today as my manager is gone for the weekend. We are showing the new Scream 2 movie to big crowds....Maquoketa is getting a new doctor in July. Signing bonus of over $l40,000 is being given. Sunny, but cool today.....A Maqoketa man was involved in a car and parked vehicle accident around 5:30 yesterday afternoon. He was not injured and has been charged with OWI-1st Offense.....Sometime over the weekend, a 10-speed bike was stolen from Steven Phillip's home on East Apple. Maquoketa, like the nation as a whole, has a lot of bicycle thefts.....It's leaf raking and pickup time in the Timber City. Crews start picking up Monday......This is National Massage Therepy week. We havve 3 therapists in Maquoketa and they were giving a free Massage today at the Chamber Office. You guessed it. I got a free Massage by Lynn Schultz. Great for stress relief and tight muscles. Felt great. Tomorrow, they'll be on KMAQ's interview show and host Leighton Hepker gets a Massagge during the show. Anyway, a full massage takes on hour and I think I'll get one of those soon. Lynn now has
her office on the bypass but is moving it to McKinsey Drive by the Key Motel in November. She has a partner in her office, but I can't recall her name. And the other therapist is Kathleen Kane. Her husband is attorney Mike Kane and she has her office in her home. My suggestion to you is to get a relaxing Massage soon and report back to me.......A birth. Girl, born Monday to Tim and Kim Helbrecht of Maquoketa.....Saw Dude Reichling at McAfee's Restaurant today. Had knew surgery and doing good. Looks good. Said he still enjoys a beer a day. Dude ran a popular gas station in Maquoketa for many, many years. Pumped millions of gallons. Now in his low 80's and retired...Morrie Morris is 76 tomorrow. One of Maquoketa's longtime golfers. Now retired. Still plays a good game of golf. His wife Dorothy, still playing too. She's been an avid golfer all her life. Was KMAQ's bookkeeper for over 20 years, now retired. Hello again. Our oldest child, Christy (Mrs. Charlie Clasen) is 33 today. Remember well when I took Nancy to the Army hospital at Fort Hood,Texas to have Christy. The nurse met me at the front door of hospital, took a small suitcase from me and then t
old me she would call when the baby was born. So, I went back to our apartment and waited. I remember also that Nancy had to make her own bed, etc. at the hospital. But, the price was right. Just a few dollars for having our first baby. I was a PFC (
a radio announcer) with the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood then.
Christy and

over, a mistake in estimates by the engineeer. The council was asked to pay the overage, but twice on a tie vote, the matter was left unsettled. Now, it has been turned over to the Street Committee to come up with a recomendation........The popular Cit
y Manager of Bellevue, Tom Roth, announced today he is leaving that position after 10 years to join the staff of the Bellevue State Bank. He applied for the manager's job here in Maquoketa, but pulled his application aat the last minute. Turned out he
was already considering the bank job then.........A breakin Monday night at the Maquoketa Redemption Center. A side door was entered and approximately 10 large bags of cans was taken. Here in Iowa, empty cans are worth 5-cents.....Had some work down on
my teeth today at Dr. Leo Biehl's office and he told me that he and Lois are going to visit relatives in Germany in November. His first trip there and looking forward to it. Doc now works just 2 days a week. Dr. Buddy Atienza bought the practice a fe
w years ago. Lois still runs the Dairy Queen on South Main, now closed for the season. Doc told me today that the lot will be paved next week and that over the winter, a small addition to the Dairy Queen will be made so that they will have a drive-up w
indow when they re-open next Spring. Some day they may enlarge it further and keep it open year around. Doc said since the new highway was completed South of town, and the Maquoketa exit was opened too, traffic has increased quite a bit coming into Maqu

Also visited with Dr. Bernard and he's getting ready for duck hunting. He also is still going to the office each day across from Fareway. We have over 60 members in Rotary and a good turnout today. I'm also a Lions Club member and that club is down to
less than 20 members and is not doing well. Unless they get some new members, they may fold. At last meeting, I pledged to get a new member by the end of year and put out the challege for every membere to do the same. In both Rotary and Lions, women a
re very much welcome as members. So, if you would like to join the Maquoketa Lions Club, let me know. I need a member......Last night we got down to 31 in downtown Maquoketa and tonight, expect to get down to around 40. Light rain also expected......Had
coffee with Jake Bickford from Bill Moler's men's store. He's celebrating 38 years in downtown Maquoketa with a sale. Buddy and Myrna Olsen were in for coffee too...at McAfee's Family Restaurant. Myrna sure looked good, but Buddy is kind of aging a lit
tle. Working fairly hard I believe, at his security business headquartered at his farm home northwest of Maquoketa. Has clients all over, including Dubuque. I suspect he's getting kind of rich...making a lot more money than when he was police chief he
re in town.....Bill Merrick was at the barber shop as always today and looking good too. He has been at the shop since the early 50's. Now that George Spalding is going out of business in the shoe store, Merrick is probably the 'senior" downtown fullti
me business person. For all of Maquoketa, I think maybe Carl Rotman is the 'senior' business person. He's been in the automotive business since 1950 I believe. Anyway, stopped in to see Bill to get some ideas for Maquoketa's Veteran's Day program, which
I'm in charge of this year. Bill is a member of the Jackson County "40 and 8" Club. Anyone know what it is all about? It is a fraternal veterans group with about 30 or so members still active in Jackson County. They're having their monthly meeting i
n Bellevue tonight and rotate to other cities monthly. Bill Merrick has devoted a lot of time over the years to the Legion, VFW and anything pertaining to veterans......Well..sorry to ramble about non-news things today. I'm glad the Marlins are in the Wo
rld Series...now hope the Indians get in also. So much for today.

ted chimney for a woodburning stove was he reason for the call. The stove was in a shed and was confined to the roof and wooden beams. Damage estimate was around $500. The Maquoketa Lumber Company is owned by Mark Maze. He purchased business from his fat
her, Ted. Ted still works there parttime.......A former Maqoketa resident will be on a national TV show tomorrow. Louann Paul, daughter of Don and Mary Moritz of Maquoketa will be on the GAYLE KING SHOW ON NBC-TV, talking about prematuure babies.......

issippi River. For a 3 block area, they now have a sidewalk, two gazebos, shrubs and flowers other improvements. Now lots of places residents and visitors and walk and sit and overook the beautiful river...The Governor is coming to Jaskson County. La
meduck Gov. Terry Branstad comes to Preston Thursday to take a tour of their growing industrial park which has received some state grants......The Maquoketa Library board is asking for volunteers to help move books into the new library addition again this

Fantistic fall day in Maquoketa, the high 70. Will be a great evening for high school football. Maquoketa playing at Tama, over 2 hours from here. Teams travel long distances now because schools play according to district alignments. This system,
about 3 years old, has 4 classses of schools and schools play only other schools of their size. Maquoketa is 3A........Iowa has this week off. They play a week from tomorrow against Michigan.......Jim Swieter, a l977 graduate of MCHS, and son of Don and
Betty Swieter of Maquoketa, has been named GM of the Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge, California. Quite a job. The club recently spent four million dollars remodeling the clubhouse. Another local boy does well.He and his wife live in Costa Mes
a, California.....A boy born Wednesday to Everett and Brenda Bowling of Maquoketa.....Carson & Son Funeral home in Maquoketa is in midst of a $200,000 expansion......Bernie Rosenberg sold his condeminium this week to Ed and Grace Tubbs. Its one of 6 uni
ts out on edge of golf course. Rev. Harold Kumpf, retired, sold his home and purchased a nearly new one out by the golf course. All one story, no steps. By the way, his son Mike and family lives in Indiana, his daughter Barb and family lives in Colora
do. Husband MCHS graduate Juan Mohr. His daughter Cookie, married to MCHS grad Curt Hulsen, and family live in Eldridge. Pastor Kumpf, in his low 80's, is in our coffee group every morning that meets at the Decker Hotel. He and wife Elenor are doing f
ine. He's a good St. Louis Cardinals fan...has been since 1927. I kid him a lot about his long sermons when he was the Pastor all those years at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Speaking of churchs, the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Missouri Syno
d, established here about 10 years ago, has folded. Its beautiful little church down in the wooded valley north of the hospital, is now for sale for around $250,000. The church has had its ups and downs over the years with the downs coming when they los
t a minister several times.....Well, better end this and will make a quick visit next to the 61 Drive-In Theatre and see how things are going out there. Talk to you tomorrow. Cheer for Iowa State tomorrow, they NEED A WIN.

We had a cool spell today...high of only 64. It is supposed to warm up again tomorrow........Fire destroyed a home in Bellevue today, owned by Dennis Feil and located on 3rd Street. The renter, Tammy Mueller, was taken to the hospital here in Maquoketa

500....South Main Street, from Bowman Amoco Station south to the new Sunrise Family Restaurant (locaated justSouth of what was Curly's South Inn for many years) is getting curb and gutter. That stretch never had it before. A good improvement for Maquok
eta, especially since many poeple coming in off the 4-lane Maquoketa exit see this area first upon entering the city.....Clinton has a new hugh Hy-Vee Store, which just recently opened. This week, they ran a big fullpage ad in Maquoketa newspaper, with
a valuable coupon. Naturally, it didn't go over well with Maquoketa stores. The Jack & Jill Store here in Maquoketa is countering with radio spots saying they will honor the coupon and pushing their friendly hometown service. It will be interesting to
see if Hy-Vee continues to seek Maquoketa shoppers on a regular basis. Hy Vee is an Iowa firm with a chain of stores and the one just opened in Clinton fills one full city block. Maquoketa has 3 supermarkets. Jack & Jill is owned by a Tipton man who
has 3 or 4 stores. It is now open 24 hours a day. We have a Fareway Store downtown, nearly accross from the theatre in South Main, owned by an Iowa firm headquarted in Boone. They must have around 50 stores in Iowa. And our 3rd store is a chain sto
re too...a discount chain, named Aldi's. They offer items in bulk, as well as individual items, with no carryout service, they take no checks, and so its a no-frills store. Many believe Maquoketa is a prime target for a new super-type supermarket. Cou
ld possibly happen after the new 4-lane highway 61 is completed about a year from now. That's it for today.

where he will stay without bond until his sentencing at 9 AM on October 24th. Both chargges carry mandatory life prison sentences. Koncel's brother Brian has been charged in the same murder and is scheduled to stand trial in early December. He has requ
ested a change of venue and if granted, his trail may be in Muscatine or maybe Tipton. The court decides on that request. KMAQ covered the trial extensively with Sheri Melvold at the courthouse almost every minute. We even broadcast the sumations of both
attorneys yesterday afternoon........Robert Whalen,Sr.of Clinton and formerly of Maquoketa, died today in Clinton. Survivors include a daughter, Laurie Knickrehm of Maquoketa. He was a member of the Maquoketa Country Club and past Maquoketa Lions Club

ole project is expected to cost around $700,000. They have the farm picked out where it will go and the house is perfect, they say, for a clubhouse. We do need another course in this area and chance are good this one will be buildt. Maquoketa has a 9-
hole and Belleuve a 9-hole, the only 2 in Jackson County. So much for today. E-mail or Guestbook comments, questions or suggestions are always welcome.

I'm late with the Monday report. Many times, the Internet is frustrating. Monday was one of those days for me. First, I had to wait awhile before I got connected and then, after taking about 20 minutes to do the Daily Report, when I tried to enter i
t so you all could read it, the same problem happened.....my daily was rejected. So, I went home, disappointed again about Internet frustrations. Well, my son Dave again fixed the problem and here I am. Dave also has come up with a way that I can do
the Daily, and not loose it if there is a problem. In other words, I could do the daily, and if it didn't make it on like last night, I would still have it for entering at a later time........The Nashville KMAQ Travel trip was a big success. Left Maqu
oketa at 4 a.m. last Thursday and got back home at 8:30 Sunday night. Did have a flat tire on bus 1 but it was repaired quickly so no problem keeping on schedule. Weather there was prefect, in 80's all 4 days and we saw some good shows and heard a lot o
f good country music. Nashville is a boomin' city, thanks to Country Music. The hotel is huge, the largest hotel and convention center combined in the world. Vince Gill was the headline artist on Saturday night's Grand Ole Opry Show.......Now, it is catc
h-up time back home. The murder trial is moving along quickly. No session last Friday. Today, the surprise was that Joseph Koncel will NOT take stand on his behalf after all. No reason given by his attorney Tom Peckosh and it was evident, Peckosh wa
s disappointed. So, there will be NO witness for the defense. Tuesday, after closing arguments, the jury will go into deliberation. We might even have a verdict by Tuesday night......The Maquoketa Cardinal football team lost their first game of the
season Friday night in overtime. They had scored in OT and made 2 extra points. But a penalty. So, they had to try again for the extra points. This time, they missed and the game was over. Thrilling for fans, but disappointing. They play at Sout
h Tama this Friday night. And, I'm sure you have heard by now that the Iowa Hawkeyes also lost their first game of year to Ohio State. The Hawks have this Saturday off.....An accident Friday by contractors working on 6l on the Maquoketa bypass. A vehi
cle with dirt overturned on 6l near KFC and the highway was blcoked for quite while until the dirt was moved off the highway. No one injured.....The city council meets tonight and my Tuesday report will have highlights. Until Tuesday, take care.

GREETINGS. Another great fall day in Maquoketa......Walked back and forth to work today and at noon, went back and forth to Rotary meeting with my 10-speed......
Nothing dramatic with the murder trial today. They questioned one witness extensively about the crowbar used in murder of Joseph Koncel.....In Clinton County, they arrested the woman they were looking for in murder this past Monday morning near Clinton.
Remember, I mentioned the victim was seen with a woman at a Sabula tavern around 2 a.m. Monday. She was the one arrested this morning and charged with 1st degree murder. They are still looking for the man he was seen with ata 2:30 a.m. at a convenienc
