Sunny, breezy and nice today, high around 69......I had a Root Canal done today in Davenport, expensive and painfull, but all went well. After, more pain as I stopped at the President Casino on way home and lost. I'm a video poker player. Guy next to me won $1,000 with a Royal Flush. Said it was his seocnd this summer. And, as always, they were pretty busy........Murder trial is moving along faster than expected. Jury was seated by noon today an testamony begain after dinner. The first to take the stand was the wife of Marty Budde, who was killed. Also a couple neighbors testified. In his opening statemnt, Peckosh said Joseph Koncel will take the stand on his own behalf and that he will tell he killed no one and didn't hit anyone. Rumor has been that his brother did the actual killing. He will stand trial in December on same charge..........It WAS A MURDER in Clinton County Monday morning. Dead is 41 year old Gene Malone of rural Andover. Killed with a single bullit of a large gun. Was last seen at 2 Monday monring in a Sabula bar and at 2:30 at a Clinton Convenience Station. A man was with him there. And he was with a woman at Sabula bar. Both the man and woman are not around and law enforcement authorities are looking to question both. Malone was a construction worker and has been back in this area for a couple years, living with his mother. He was a graduate of Sabula High School and is survived by a son and a step-son.......Births: A girl born to David Etringer and Courtnee Pauls of Maquoketa and a boy to Mike and Jackie Crawley of rural Delmar.......The Maquoketa Cardinal football team is now ranked in the top 10 in their class in Iowa........Thanks to Lynn in San Diego for his e-mail and for signing the new guestbook. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1997

HI. A nice, but very windy day in Maquoketa...winds up to 35 MPH and gusty.......Don't know if it was the wind or not, but electricity went off all over town just before 2 this afternoon. Maquoketa's light plant was purchasing power from IES, formerly IE, and as soon as it went down, local diesel generators were started up to produces electricity locally. Within an hour, the city was on full power again using the local generators. But,even though our power was back here at KMAQ DOWNTWON, our transmitters northeast of Maquoketa use IES power out of Andrew and that power wasn't restored until about 4:l5. We went back on the air at 4:28. We were off about 2 and a half hours. Had lots of calls. But,we are back to normal now. The problem was at the IES power substation just West of town on hghway 64 or between there and the Lakehurst Dam generating plant..........The murder trial started this morning at the Court House with lots of specatators and TV crews. Sheri Melvold, who does the daily talk show, 'JUST TALK' for us, is covering the trial fulltime, exclusively for KMAQ. She said the defendant, Joseph Koncel, arrived wearing what looked like a new shirt, but no coat or tie. Jury selection started and took all day and will continue tomorrow. The defense attorney, Tom Peckosh, is famous for taking lots of time selecting jury members. We'll keep you posted........A possible homicide in Clinton County today. A man, in his 40', from rual Andover, was found, dead, in his car around 4 this morning. Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation was called in and that normally indicates foul play is suspected. The Clinton County Sheriff's office issued a statement early this morning, but had nothing new to say late this afternoon, so we'll have to wait unitl tomorrow for more information........And that will do it for today.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1997

Another beautiful day in Maquoketa.........A little rain last night......Thanks to Stan Hardin in Dubuque for e-mail on this daily being back up. Stan is one of the city's busiest pharmacists, and a GOOD ONE..........Business news: GTE phone store, now open where Mr. T's Music was for many years. Nicely done.......The Attic Needlework and Frameshop has expanded to next door building. A door was cut joining the two and the new front looks great. The new addition was the home of the Western Auto Store for many years and in recent years was a geasy spoon. Good to have this new bigger store......Next door, the still fairly new JACKSON COUNTRY gift store has added its own candy kitchen.....The old railroad depot on East Platt will soon open as a new nice supper club. More about that when it opens. Guess it will seat nearly 200. They will "brick" the parking lot any day now.......Brad Deery Motors is redoing the showroom and it will feature 14 all glass sales offices for thhis fleet of salepersons. Also, he bought the building next to Decker Hotel and will convert it to a new showroom facing Main. The old Rasmussen Motors showroom was recently torn down and is now a new car lot. The building to the South that was purchased by Brad is now empty. The 3 tenants have moved out, including the Chamber office and Bob's Barber Shop. According to Brad, the status of that building is uncertain. It may be torn down, may not......Happy Joes Pizza, I hear, is looking for new location. They will soon loose their front entrance off of 61 and therefore will loose all highway traffic and would then have to make it on local business only. It is a comlpany story, owned by Joe himself. He visits Maquoketa regularly...a good frient of Maquoketa's famous artist, Pat Costello.....61 Drive-In Theatre still open, Friday and Saturday only, and will stay open until end of October, weather permiting.....The office store across from Voy Theatre, West Office, closed and its manager opened another smaller store next to Dollar General, so we still have an office supply store......Old office store location was buildt in the 70's for a Bascin Robbins Ice Cream Store that lasted only a couple years....and rumor has it a State Farm Insurance Office will go into it next....A new American Family Insurance office just opened in location next to Bob's Barber Shop, accross from theatre. Just to North is Mike's Bikes, which I hear is doing well. Mike owns that entire building with 4 stores in it now. Mike does local business, but lots of out of town biz too. And soon, will be going full force again with ski equipment. Shudder. I'm not a winter fan.......Have heard litle lately about the drive for nearly 4-million to build a new auditorium up by high school. I've been told they have reached 1-million pledged, including the half-mil from Ed and Grace Tubbs, of Maquoketa banking fame. Will keep you posted.....The new 2 mil Maquoketa Library is near completion. Have moved into part of it and now doing work in old section. No open house mentioned yet.....The internet server for Maquoketa, out of Clinton, has added more lines here in town and also lhas opened-up Bellevue. And new US West equipment is being installed in mid-October...and this is all supposed to make internet service for Maquoketa better and faster......A Maquoketa woman died recently, never married, and left a rumored l.5 plus million estate with lots of it going to the community. Benifactors include, the library, the historical society, the Maquoketa Foundation, the Methodist Church, a rural Iron Hill Church, and others. More details still to come I beleive...KMAQ celebrated a quiet 39th birthday August 26th. Will have a bigger celebration next year...And that will have to do it for today. Enjoy the week ahead and e-mail comments are always welcome.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1997

Hello, hello, hello. I'm back, thanks to my son Dave, who worked most of last night figuring what was wrong. My WEB server was supposed to fix problem, but never got to it....So, I'll try to get bad into the habit of doing this again every day, or most days. When I have nothing to report, I'll still type in the day and say so. Pass the word that this report is back.....Homecoming weekend in Maquoketa. The Cardinals won last night over Vinton-Shellsburg by over 3 touchdowns and now the dance is tonight at the gym in Delmar. Maquoketa is now 4 and 0. Can they make it to the playoffs? Maybe so. I'll keep you posted........Iowa Hawkeyes also doing well. Iowa State NOT doing well......Murder trial starts Monday in Maquoketa. Joeseph Koncel is being tried for the murder of Marty Budde of Bellevue last Spring, north of Springbrook. Tom Pekosh will be his attorney and County Attorney Phil Tabor will prosecute. Koncel's brother will be tried later for same crime. I'll keep you posted on the trial.......New City Manager starts in early October. He's from small town in Minnesota......Nancy and I are taking 2 bus loads of Senior Citizens to Nashville next Tburday, October 2nd for 4 days, so there will not be a daily report those days......Spaldings Footware is going out business after over 50 years. That announcement came as a surprise, but times are changing in small town retail and the store was not profitable. A big sale will continue into October. George Spalding has been working part time the last couple years and will now going on fulltime retirement. His son Scott will be starting a new career but has not said what he will do. That building has been honme for a shoe store over 80 years. Sad to think it will be empty soon.......The Chamber of Commerce has moved to their new office next to Spaldings. The building was given to Chamber by Mr. and Mrs. Red Blayney. It has been completly remodled and looks nice. Oh yes, Chamber Executive Director Deb Newman, also Economic Development Director for the City, has resigned to go to work in Iowa City. She leaves October31st after 8 years at the job. They are advertising for a new director......Maquoketa will have just one contest in the November city election. Mayor Jack Rosenberg will be opposed by Richard Stimmell, who works for Wal Mart and also does janitor and lawn mowing jobs all over town. Longtime contractor John Cressey is running for the council unopposed. Darrell Rettig elected not to seek reelection.......Well, so much for now. I'll take awhile before I get you caught up on things that happened while we were shut down. If you have any questions, contact me via email and I'll answer here. Iowa just beat Illinois 38 to l0 and are now 4 and 0....Big Osterhaus wedding in Maquoketa today, one of the daughters. Reception at the Decker Hotel....Weather has been nice in September and the corn and soybean crop should be good in this area. Very little harvesting yet, but not far off. A week from today will be the annual Octoberfest of Bands day in Maquoketa....So long for now. Check back tomorrow.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 1997

Maquoketa has a new Police Chief. Mayor Rosenberg appointed Bob Andersen to the position at the city council meeting last night and the council approved. He has been acting chief since Mark Brooks left town late in Spring. Bob has been member of the Police Department for many years, and was Chief once before. He is in his late 50's.....Now, we need to wait about another month to find out who will be the new Maquoketa City Manager......Maquoketa is getting a new bike path. More on that later.....Accident news, 16-year old Kevin Bybee, son of Dr. Bybee, had an accident with the family van. Received minor injuries......A Maquoketa man had $1,500 taken from his pick-up. A toolbox filled with tools. Another person south of Maquoketa had his home broken into and $800 worth of household itms taken..TV, VCR, Microwave, etc. Yes, Maquoketa is a nice town, but like all others, we have our share of crime......Nice day today, in the 70's......Business spotlight. Where can you buy furniture locally? Just 2 furniture stores in Jackson County. Owl Furniture on South Main where Better Homes Furniture was for many years. Owl also has a store in Dubuque and in Wisconsin. Our store is run by Rob Hohman, one of the owners. Lives East of Maquoketa with wife and 2 small kids. Nice family and a nice store. Other store is Jackson County Home Furnishings in downtown Maquoketa in the two buildings that once were home to JC Penney Store and to Beaty's Ben Franklin Store. Buildings and business owned by Chuck Gregwoire of Grand Mound, who also owns the WaterBed Creations stores in this area with its manufacturing plant in Grand Mound. There is also a furniture store run by Tom McNeil in Preston, known as T.M. Woodworks. All of furniture in it is hand made by Tom's craftsmen in Preston. Excellent quality. And that's it...kind of strange for an entire county to have just 2 full compliment furniture stores and one speciality wooden furniture store.......MTV was taken off the local cable TV earlier this year and some kids are mad. Can't blame them. Our cable system, owned by giant TCI, is under capacity and I guess they don't want to spend the money to upgrade it.......It's 5 P.M. and time to head for home. Like always, been here since 6:30 and its been a long but good day. Hope it has for you too.

Hello, hello, hello. I'm back, thanks to my son Dave, who worked most of last night figuring what was wrong. Maybe so.
